Even with videos that you have shared of sockeye hitting bait like this or hitting a plug, it still has many saying that sockeye will not take bait or lures or flies. I learned that they do in fact take flies of certain colors in the right conditions many years ago and that was like 1990 or 91 but I have learned that they will take certain colors of yarn on a yarn drifting rig as well. On the Kenai river, I have caught sockeye that had eggs in their bellies but also small sculpin or some other small fish as well. Some in a river outside of Anchorage have learned that sockeye will take shrimp under a bobber but this same river has sockeye that have chased spinners or spoons as well, so the you only get them by lining/flossing them is not always the case, which I myself know a lot that I do catch have been lined/flossed but I keep them because they are a tasty fish.
I did not think sockeye would bite bait!!! I was always taught that they basically HAD to be flossed (that method makes me want to punch every single one that does it for silvers, kings, and chum, as it is unnecessary) but this is by far the most interesting video I have seen all day, and I have been searching ALL DAY!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
@@fishwithjd I'd love to do a collaboration with you if you were willing!! Idk if you're a guide or if you get paid in any way to teach fishing...I know I don't (facebook doesn't pay much) but a video of catching sockeye on bait and bobber is exactly the type of video I need on my channel! Nobody believes it can be done, and here you are showing it! I live in Anchorage and definitely not made of money, which is why Bird Creek is as far South as I've ever traveled for fishing, but I would go wherever you are to collaborate!!! It's that impressive to me, I just wanted to throw that out there because I'm fishin, and I wanted you to know the emphasis of my feelings on it!!!! Kudos, I'll always tell people they're wrong after seeing this.
Bobber and eggs -- and prawns and coon shrimp work really well too. Small 1/8 pink jig tipped with bait is what I use. The key is finding places where the sockeye are resting. Travelers aren't as good of biters.
shrimp or krill scented eggs will work but some have caught them with shrimp put on a jig hook under a bobber. I guess they push the shrimp up on the part that holds the plastic jigs. I have caught some on shrimp scented eggs where they inhaled the eggs like this one did in this video.

Yeah I’d say they will bite in any river…provided you have good bait and the right conditions (the fish need to be resting not traveling).
Awesome info man, thanks for actually sharing
You bet
