Renault wanted to shake up the executive car market back in 2002. They certainly got some attention, launching not one but two equally quirky big luxury cars. The Vel Satis (and it's even more garish sister the Avantime) were big on space, equipment and all round luxury. This did not translate into sales though, with Renault not even selling a third of the small sales target they had for the Vel Satis. Now one of the rarest modern classics on the road, what's the Vel Satis like today?
(Special thanks to Tom for allowing me to review and roadtest his car)

    Car insurance disclaimer
The "Go compare" and having a "cheeky drive" segment was a reference to when (off camera) I drove the car up the street and turned it round and parked it for Tom. I was however temporarily insured when driving in this video. This was after Tom unexpectedly asked me to drive to the petrol station for him, that I decided to include the short road test as part of the then not so cheeky drive😆

Great review. The sound that the boot makes closing is normal. My dad bought one of these majestic beauties new and it's the same exact noise.

Very cool. My dad used to have a Safrane. Not as daring as this, but same rationale behind it, lovely car.

I loved the Vel Satis when is came out; it looked so futuristic while also being big and comfy.

Ah! Thanks to clever technology I found that you had other less contentious and much more balanced and enjoyable videos with a growing USP. Super. More of them!

Honestly so funny once again Matty, loved this! I actually completely forgot about this car so thanks very much for reminding me of how dreary it looks :)

Had a 2.2 diesel one of these... hands down one of the overall best cars I've ever had, period - having owned Cayennes, CLs and a host of new Audis. I would love to get into a low-mileage one again, probably a diesel too.

It's the fan belt that was squeaking.

It's one of the few Renaults I would be very, very keen to drive, and you got the best version of all! Well done, sir.

My dad owns a 2008 VelSatis initiale with a 3.5 V6, its the most comfortable car I've ever sat in.

Good Job Matty! Just want to mention to the maybe interested ones: don't go for the the 2.2 Diesel and even not for the 3.0....to much probs! Best choice is the newer 2.0 diesel and 3.5Gasoline if you can afford the consumption.

Nice video. I love cars not sold in the US, especially ones with absurd designs.
