You most likely don't even want to reach the point when you're not sure whether or not to keep clapping, and the performers don't want you too, either. Waiting for the applause to die is awkward for everyone, unless the person on stage has something to announce. (I know, that's an old comment. But it's not a bad question.)

I saw these Brothers perform in sweden in around -89. It is the best acrobat act I have ever seen. It totally blew me away and I will never forget it!
