I like how Spike is physically changed by all the Slayers he faces. The Slayer in the Boxer rebellion gave him the scare above his eye, and the Slayer in New York gave him his jacket. They all change him a little bit to make him who he is today.

We see Spike "assembled" in this episode.
      We see him acquire his...
      Vampirism
      Name
      Accent
      Scar
      Hair style
      Jacket
      Did I miss anything?

Spike being a sensitive poet as a human was totally unexpected given his character as a vampire. However, Spike is most sensitive vampire we've seen by far and that goes back to his life as a human, so it he makes complete sense. I don't know if Spike could have pulled the trigger or not - that extreme violence might have just caused his head to explode. After Spike is triggered by Buffy saying "You're beneath me", he was crying. Something is definitely happening with Spike, and it's just another great story line in this excellet season of Buffy.

I mean, we did get glimpses at how he loves with what he put up with from dru and how he stayed with her and cared for her through so much, including her cheating on him and outting him down! and his poetic nature in previous eps and seasons. Like his whole “love isnt brains children - its blood, screaming inside you to work its will!”

The relationship between Spike and Buffy is absolutely bizarre.
Notice how their relationship is completely different in seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5. Here we are in season 5 and their relationship has already changed and developed this early in the season.
    It's bonkers. And also nuts.

My interpretation of the ending is that Buffy just had more and more on her shoulders this season, and had a death wish in that moment. Not that she was suicidal, just that she was over it for a small moment. Like Spike said, it just takes one small window of the slayer having that death wish... He really could have killed her right there and then but opted to comfort her instead.

I think after awhile, every slayer has a death wish just because they’re over it. Imagine having to fight for your life every day for the rest of your life.

Really liking the extra time you took at the end of this episode to give your thoughts. With this season especially, there is so much to discuss with the many slow burn storylines they have running in the background of each episode.
On this matter, I have to say, the narrative segues they've been using have been next level with how interesting, relevant and natural they've been across multiple plot threads:
    - Despite her renewed sense of purpose and more intense training this season, Buffy gets beat by and nearly killed by a regular vampire... So she has to go to Spike to learn about how he's killed two slayers and we learn about his past.
    - Joyce has been sick, and Buffy encounters a crazy guy picking up meds for her, which in itself is linked to the woman in the red dress, and the guy spooks her into doing a spell to see what's affecting Joyce... And that instead leads to her finding out about Dawn.
    - Joyce has some sort of health episode and asks Dawn, "Who are you?" (which it itself linked to the mystery of Dawn's origin at that point) before collapsing... And Buffy and Riley's visit to the hospital leads to the discovery of Riley's heart issues and inferiority complex.

    • @UTU49
      @UTU49 Před 2 lety

I love the way Joyce's health problem leads to the discovery of Riley's health problem... and Riley's health problem leads to Spike's attempt to get his chip removed. So much "plot-thread-linkage".

I had some issues when the writers kind of lost their idea of what to do with Spike towards the second half of season 4. James said so himself that he was supposed to be Cordelia's replacement as far as being the snarky character being critical of the group, but it just wasn't working. When season 5 came and we saw Spike was starting to have a crush on Buffy, I groaned in frustration. But I this was the masterpiece of an episode that got me on board and really laid the groundwork for the backstory of his character. James Marsters did a stellar job, having to play his character in so many different stages throughout the episode. That final scene with Sarah and James *chef's kiss* Perfection.

Yeah if they would have left that out and just had Spike fall in love with Buffy it wouldn't have been so powerful later on.

Haven't seen many, if any, guess that William aka Spike bumped into Angelus, Drusilla, and Darla. So much for that surprise in _Darla._
It's not that Buffy is suicidal. It's that in that moment, with everything being weighted on her shoulders, she, in that moment, unconsciously gave up, giving the vampire the win with Buffy getting staked.

I know I've already mentioned this in a previous comment, but I would love to see you react to Merlin if you've never watched it before. It's #2 on the list of my top 5 favorite shows of all time. And you probably already know this, but Anthony head (Giles) play in Merlin as King Uther. The characters of Giles and King Uther are so different, they're like night and day! Shows you how good of an actor Anthony Head is. I've been loving your Buffy reactions! 😊

This is my favorite episode of the entire series. There are other episodes that are "better", but this is my favorite.

The final scene where they are sitting together like two old warriors. Spike in reality and Buffy just for a Slayer. Those two sitting on the porch could be the main image for the entire show.
Spike, when he was talking to Buffy about how Slayers die, mentioned three ways. First, Slayers are in deep if they don't have a weapon. The first Slayer dropped her stake and dropped her life. Second is pure RNG. Keep fighting long enough, eventually something is going to get you.

Third was the darkest. Eventually Slayers get to the point where they've had enough. When Buffy says, "Say it's true. Say I do want to." I don't think she was about making out with vampires. I think it was about that third way. Spike would never be the vampire that takes her out. But Spike was trying to get a physical relationship going, and that is how he took her rejection.

Spike says that inevitably her death wish will come to the fore. S-"The second that happens, I'll slip in, have myself a real good day." Later, after his awkward attempt to hit on her he says "Come on. I can feel it Slayer. You know you want to dance." Spike is saying he can feel her desire for him. But then Buffy says "Say it's true." That she has desire for him? Or is she saying she has a desire for the dance. A death wish. "Say I do want to."
But Spike also said it's her family and friends who tie her here. Keeping it at bay. So is it in her, kept at bay by her family and friends? Would it come out without them?
We already know the answer to this, it's yes. In The Wish we see Buffy without her support system and she has death-wishyness all over her. B-"The world is what it is. We fight, we die. Wishing doesn't change that." And she turns down help to fight the Master. B-"There's only one thing I'm good at." G-"At least let's muster some force." B-"I don't play well with others." And eventually he kills her.
So I think it is there, and Buffy is telling Spike he would never be the vamp who takes her down.

Fool For Love is an exceptional episode this why IMHO S5 is by far the best season. The flashbacks are superb we can see where William/Spike is the way he is. He has been treated appallingly by women through the ages Cecily/Drusilla/Buffy. He was a gentle person as a human as opposed to Liam/Angel was an awful human. The scene in The Boxer Rebellion where Drusilla, Darla, Angel and Spike are walking away from the fire and Spike jumps in the air is one of the most iconic ever. This scene is exactly replicated in Angel episode called 'Darla' S2 E7 for those watching the watchlist of both shows in order. The fight on the train too with Spike in 70s where he steals the slayer's coat was brilliant. Buffy repeats Cecily's words 'you're beneath me' there is just so much foreshadowing in this episode it's amazing. A truly brilliant episode in S5 without doubt the best season, Fool For Love is definitely in top 10 episodes of whole series. This is one of the best episodes of the series so far, but there are two more in this Season that even better than this! S5 blows all the others away. Incredible writing!

Thank you for the best timing in the world, nothing better than waking up on your birthday and being able to watch the best reactor ever watching one of the best Buffy episodes ever!
There's a Buffy book I read a long time ago that's about Spike in NYC in 1977 and the Slayer he killed, it's not canon but it may as well be since it sticks to the plot perfectly. The coolest thing, to me anyway, is a scene in the book where Spike goes to CBGBS before he runs into the Slayer and sees the band called Dead Boys. I was at the exact same show described in the book so I get to pretend I was at CBGBS when Spike was there 😎 (I wrote the author and asked him about it, he confirmed that it was the same show I was at, he was there as well)
Off to watch Darla! Thank you for your perfect speed ❤️

Funny that Spike speaks some random demon languages, but doesn’t understand Chinese. “Duì bùqí (I’m sorry) is one of the first phrases one learns from travel guides. So if he was walking around there for a while, he should have picked that up with his talent for languages (probably lots of Chinese vamps walking around)
Now because of the Chinese I suddenly had to think of “Firefly”, another great series by Joss Whedon. Maybe you can check it out.
