The 2020 MINI Cooper SE is MINI’s first fully electric car offered for sale. Kelley Blue Book’s Micah Muzio traveled to Miami to sample the all-electric MINI to see if it retains the brand’s familiar fun-loving road manners.
The MINI Cooper SE is the brand’s first mainstream, pure electric vehicle. This is a first drive. Let’s drive it. First, yes MINI leased 450 MINI Es back in 2009. But at the end of those leases MINI retrieved their cars. The Cooper SE is the first electric MINI you can keep. In essence the all-new electric MINI is a standard Cooper merged a 32.6-kWh battery pack and a 184-horsepower electric motor swiped from the BMW i3…in this case driving the front wheels. If you know about electric motors you know that they make maximum torque at zero rpm, enabling immediate and powerful thrust.
How does that translate to a MINI Cooper? Let’s see. In an urban setting with frequent stops that punchy pull is intoxicating. For those keeping track, zero to sixty sprints clock in a few ticks above 7 seconds.
At higher speeds the electric powertrain feels plenty powerful. Note: top speed is 93 MPH. There are two-mode regenerative brakes. So the driver can one-pedal drive if so inclined. There are also 4 Drive Modes.
Alrighty, let’s talk price. A base Cooper SE with smart key access and 6.5-inch screen featuring Apple CarPlay starts at $30,750 including destination charges. Exploit a $7,500 federal tax incentive and that price drops to about $23-grand. Even less if you can utilize state incentives. If you want a well-equipped MINI at a tantalizing price, consider the electric. The other important number to consider is range. According to the EPA, the MINI Cooper SE can cover 110 miles. That’s pegs the SE as a fine daily driver, but you’ll need another rig for cross-country jaunts.
For home charging MINI’s Wallbox tops the battery off from empty in as little as 3.5 hours. Use a 50kw DC quick charging station and the battery can achieve an 80% charge in 35 minutes. Speaking of the battery. MINI crammed it into the center tunnel and where the fuel tank would normally be. Consequently, interior space is identical to the standard MINI. With its hefty battery pack the MINI SE weighs 320 pounds more than an automatic equipped Cooper S but that weight is placed low and evenly front to rear. With its 50/50 front-to-rear weight balance and lowered center of gravity, how does the SE steer? Like this! Ooh. That is a proper good time.
Aesthetically speaking, other than vivid yellow accents, unique badging, wheels inspired by British power outlets, and a slightly higher ride height to safely clear the battery pack, the MINI SE just looks like a MINI Cooper. Inside there’s an SE specific drive selector and a special digital gauge cluster but otherwise, it’s a MINI that just happens to be electrified.
Given its range the MINI Cooper SE does not make sense for every American. But it is fun to drive, has charming looks, and thanks to an enticing price and generous tax incentives, it’s a superb value. For daily commutes filled with lively spirit and carpool access, this could be a sweet ride.

How do you feel about the MINI Electric's 110 mile range? Is it enough?

Okay for a city commute car, or if you live in the 'burbs and can charge at your garage every night. 110mi is not sufficient for people living without a garage.

Nope! Not making excuses for this thing. It’s fun, but it’s not practical unless you never drive to the airport, a super-far restaurant, or anywhere else outside your usual commute. Mini will get no praise for this in hindsight, dunno why they should get it now.

Finally an EV of an existing car done right. They just took the original look of the car and tweaked it alittle unlike other car manufacturer who made their ev looks like a futuristic concept car.

Definitely a niche vehicle but as such it may be very appealing to those who need a second vehicle that serves as a daily driver for a 40-50 mile round trip commuter or an errand runner. Leave the midsize or full size SUV at home. Balance your carbon footprint and the reduce contributions to the oil companies. While most EV manufacturers are struggling to extend the range of their vehicles, MINI is aiming for a market the others are abandoning. Furthermore, with tax credits and the driving experience of a MINI, it makes a fairly compelling overall case.

Depends how you drive and where you live. In winter (10C/50F and below) and on the highway sure, but in warm weather in city/town driving I imagine you could occasionally do better than 110.

@@carlosalba7790 The Carwow test was a good one. The only considerations with it were temperature (7C-4C/ 44F-39F) and it was almost entirely motorway driving, both reduce possible range. Carwow link: czcams.com/video/ZH7V2tU3iFc/video.html

I believe a heat pump is standard for HVAC. Bases on the usable battery capacity I'd imagine 110 miles is very realistic with plenty of opportunity to exceed said range in the city or on back roads. The Heat pump alone with outrun GM and Tesla HVAC efficiency in heating.
The larger, and heavier Kia Niro EV will do 3+ miles per kWh at 75 MPH. The smaller, and lighter Mini is most likely more efficient over the Niro, 90+ miles on the freeway sounds completely realistic. In the real world, with highway and city mixed driving, we regularly see 3.7 - 4.2 miles / kWh with the Niro. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Mini turns out 115-135 miles in similar conditions, with temperatures approaching freezing even.

Having worked at a MINI dealer for 10 years now, I can tell you with confidence that what they claim, virtually ANYONE should be able to achieve. Roughly 99% of my clients exceed the claimed EPA numbers for fuel economy on all of our cars, including those who, like me, "drive em like they stole em!". I participated in the launch training for the EV and it was stated that the 110 mile range is achieved in the normal "Mid Mode" driving mode, using the higher regenerative braking mode, and that some testers were seeing range closer to 150 miles. I am sure real world numbers will follow soon after launch, and I look forward to taking one home for a few days to see how it does myself.

You forgot the $7,500 tax credit which brings this down to $22,500. At that price, I'm a customer. This would be a great second car, so huge range isn't important for me.

    • @jaroessa294
      @jaroessa294 Před 4 lety

You seem misinformed about the 'tax credit'. It is NOT an instant rebate or cash-back offer that reduces the price when it comes time to "pay the bill" at the dealership when you take possession of the car. You will need $30k to buy this car, not @22.5k. The 'tax credit' is simply a paperwork figure when you do your taxes the following year and it will NOT get you a $7500 check back from the IRS.
