  • This set-up has seen me through every project over the last year - from composing for Spitfire Audio, to producing for Gary Barlow, to working on these CZcams videos. Today's tour is a little behind the scenes, showing everything I use to make music on a daily basis.

    You are a brilliant and thoughtful communicator. What a great service you are providing. Just started following you and you’ve already shaved hours off my week. Btw, I tried to get that controller with no luck. I found a guy in Texas that custom builds them. I bought a 3-slider unit with 100mm throw that’s setup for the Spitfire plug-in. Works well. “Sparrow MIDI Controller.”

    Lovely desk, Dan, really lovely. The actual desk, too. Christian is 100% right about kaizen. I find that he's often right about a lot of things, despite his protestations.

    As a recent purchaser of the new MacBook Pro, you’re in for a treat. Still haven’t even got the fans to turn on, let alone challenge its performance ceiling.
    Also DT770s are mainly used for tracking in my experience (hence the closed backs), they wouldn’t ever be used to make any critical sound decisions - relatively excitable bass on them as well

    What a great video! Awesome setup! And I want one of those monitor lights! Very cool. :-)

    That setup looks awesome Dan.
    I was wondering where did you get the dbx-160. That's by far one of my favourite compressors for vocal tracking.
    It has a tone that I just enjoy.
    I'd love to get one of those.
    Thank you for sharing and the content, as great as usual mate.
    Greetings from Spain.

    00:52 Piano keyboard does not look ergonomic though, looks more like a carpal tunnel wishlist. Pianos in front of a computer and behind a computer keyboard are problematic, haven't figured out a good setup myself either.

      I agree, really struggling with setup at the moment.. I have too many conundrums to get it right. Push2, Maschine, Jam, and the S88..
      I’m after a desk that puts the S88 on a draw below the main desk.. But limited options. Nice problems to have.

    Hi Dan, thank you for this video, it has been super helpful while I’ve been investing in my own “home” studio set up.
    I’ve just bought the Beyerdynamic 990 Pro headphones you mentioned. Just wondering do you have an amplifier or are plugged directly into your Apollo Twin?

    Absolutely good video. I have a question about the apple key board. I am about to buy the new IMAC 24 inch for music productions and it comes with a small standard keyboard. I am using the same keyboard now as well on my old Imac. Do you think that paying the extra 26 euro to get the extended keyboard is a must do for music production? I never missed that extra part so I have no idea what to do with these extra keys. Love to see your reply

    Hey Dan thanks as ever for a fantastic video I think I’ve watched this one three times! I have a similar setup to you in that I have an Apollo Twin X with ADAT expander. Given that the Twin X only has optical in, how do you get the audio out to your outboard effects? Through the Apollo’s audio outputs, then daisy chaining them? Thanks

    Hey Dan. Thanks for the information in your video, i find it very usefull. The Blackmagic multidock ofers 10Gb/sec thunderbol speed right? Can you use 4 2,5” ssd hd to a total of 16Tb? Do you find that the read speed is nearlly close to the mac internal Ssd Drives. I am courious because i may need one system like this. Thanks in advance and

    Thanks for this video. Any reason you went with DT990 250ohm instead of 600 ohm? I have the DT770 80ohm and although comfortable, don't sound very good. I want to get it right the next time.

    • @DanKeenMusic
      @DanKeenMusic  Před rokem +1

      I don't think I knew about the 600ohm at the time! All I can say is I like the 250s, and can confirm that they work well when plugged straight into the standard headphone port on the new MacBook Pros, if that sways you at all

    Hey Dan, thanks for your full description of the setup. I have a really stupid question regarding screen resolution. I also use a 27 inch 4K display, but I'm always unsure as to what resolution to set it to. What do you use? 1080p (default for retina)? 2160p? Some odd resolution in the middle? Thanks!

    • @DanKeenMusic
      @DanKeenMusic  Před 2 lety +1

      I guess it's all personal preference. Most of the time I have it set to 1080p but if I'm running bigger projects I'll switch to something bigger. 1080 does feel a bit clumsy sometimes, but at least everything is super-legible!

    • @DanKeenMusic
      @DanKeenMusic  Před 2 lety +2

      Even a cheap audio interface will probably be better quality than most headphone outputs on computers, plus they're more powerful so can run headphones that have a high impedance

    That's great. I have a 2018 Mac mini i5 6 core ram 8gb ssd 256gb. I am trying to upgrade my ram to 32 or 64. How many tracks of virtual orchestra can be used with a logic program with 32g of RAM? (Spitfire & NI Komplete, keyscape etc...)

    • @DanKeenMusic
      @DanKeenMusic  Před 2 lety +2

      It's hard to say as it varies from VST to VST, project to project, but 32GB RAM would probably be enough for you

    Hi Dan, very great video!
    Do I still need an audio interface when I don't really use a microphone (I don't have one)? Can't I just use the ASIO4ALL built in interface instead? Thanks Dan!

    • @boutstaxx
      @boutstaxx Před 2 lety

      No u don’t need a interface if u trying to just make beats all depends on what u trying to do the interface can connect external mics and some headphones need more power than your computer can deliver so a interface is essential but not technically needed just to have some fun typically u can record with the computer built in mic and playback with computer speakers usually a good starter interface is a Presonus Ibox or Focusrite Scarlet

    • @BaraMatahariPagi
      @BaraMatahariPagi Před 2 lety

      @@boutstaxx thanks for the answer, what if I'm doing film scoring and orchestral music? I don't need to record anything with a microphone, and I use normal day-to-day headphones. Do I still need an interface?
      P.S I'm aiming to be a real film composer, and I'm not doing it just for fun.
      Thanks :)

    • @boutstaxx
      @boutstaxx Před 2 lety

      No u don't technically if your computer is fast enough but it is something to consider soon enough I personally make beats all the time with a laptop and headphones but the volume and fidelity will max out quickly thus have to connect interface to use with power hungry headphones like Beyerdynamic dt770 or if wanting studio monitor speakers but honestly for most of us mixing on headphones usually what happens anyway
