  • i got myself a Super8 camera in the late 1970s and went around town looking for a movie. this is a compilation of clips showing a bit of what Winnipeg was like for me in those days. unfortunately, the quality is poor because of the projector used in digitalizing the film nearly 40 years later!

My aunt had one of these type of cameras when we were kids and she filmed so much of us. Unfortunately we don't have it any more but I used to love watching these movies when she would bring out the film projector and beam the film towards the wall on the kitchen. Lights out it was film time. Thanks for the great video and bad shape or not this video shows people what was "state-of-the-art" back in the day!

Just stumbled across this ... as you do these days. Maybe I'm just too nostalgic but I find video and images like this to be quite trippy. My mind just races back to the fact I was in grade 6/7 when this was being filmed. So strange to see these little clips of day-to-day life back then ... people going about their business. A tiny snapshot in time and I was there too going about my own day-to-day ... right there ... same time ... same place. So many years have gone by now though. Anyway, thanks for posting! :)

Great blast from the past. Could have been made by me. Lived in Osborne Village. The "Zoo" was our watering hole. The Royal Albert was great for their Blues Jams.
I remember the big debate about the motorcycle helmets... even went to the last movie event at the downtowner. It was a pseudo punk event and the place was absolutely trashed and people flying through the air. It was a great time to be young in Winnipeg!

This was really fun to watch. I only have a few scarce memories of those downtown blocks that got replaced by the mall. I love that little Dick's Locksmith place-you know, back when, beyond all the concrete and asphalt, downtown still had the occasional shack. Thanks for posting!

the poor quality just adds to the effect. I remember right about this time taking the bus downtown on Saturdays to hit the record stores on portage, Comic World, and Red River Books.

@@gen-x-dadI wonder if Orpheus billiards is still there. It was a pool hall on Fort or Garry where all the bus drivers would go to shoot pool when they were in the middle of their ridiculous split shift. It was on the south side of Portage and I think one block over was Main street. And lets not forget the many movie theatres including one in Eaton Place and one in the Convention centre. The only time I visit that area now is when I come in to see my doctor and then head down to Oscar's Delicatessen on Hargrave , then I head north to Portage ave. and west to the perimeter hwy. It's sad to see so few people on the streets...only people stopped to transfer to another bus. Back in the 60's and 70's it was usually wall to wall people going from Eaton's to the Bay and vice versa .

Morgentallers clinic is now a law office of all things. Lived for a while across the street their on Corydon avenue first apartment and I remember protests outside it. There is a Catholic church at Stafford and Corydon if you keep going down the street. It closed down though like I said and became a Law office which it still is. I am against abortion now but wasn't really back then but I was happy when it closed down. Not a very nice place to look at every day and the protests always blocked the sidewalk. Great video I was 5 or 6 then and living in Charleswood then. I live still on Corydon now at the other end of the street near confusion corner. Cool to see all that back then. I miss the ZOO and Ozzy's. My home away from home and for my friends. Great times.

A lefty made this film obviously. People protesting abortion is cool and right. Using the word cool or uncool to describe this shows me all I need to know about this person. Especially when we are talking about the life of a human being that has no way to defend him or herself. I agree in some cases of rape but people back then had morals and did not worship evil like today. the quaint protest against helmets was people standing against government overreach nothing has changed. Some people go along with whatever the government tells them. If all the citizens fought back in all of Canada we would be much better off. The government knows only people who care and that are intelligent enough to know how this will affect us will speak up and sadly are the minority.
