2005 Subaru Forester Window Motor and Regulator Repair

  • In this video i replace my window regulator and motor on my 2005 Subaru Forester for $116 in less than an hour and a half. I am posting this video to help out with the install and show you where I went wrong, and how to avoid any mistakes.
    A few articles I found online were saying this was very difficult and not worth attempting, but in my experience, i found all you need is a phillips screwdriver, and a 10 and 12mm socket, along with about and hour and a half. (if that) hope it helps.
    Link to the suction cups used in video is here:

    For anyone watching this video, the drivers side wind noise is a 20 cent and 1 minute fix in most Foresters. Get a 50cm length of rubber weather stripping (like for windows) and stuff it between the front window sill rubber insulations, there's a good space for it (the insulation is like a tube open on one side). It cured my cars problem in first try - and I had a lot of wind noise at HWY speed. The fix is invisible to outside afterwards.

    Thanks so much for this video! It is the best video out there for this job! I found that it is useful to leave one of the 4 bolts around the regulator loosely in place on the regulator - the one with the keyhole cutout in the door body. In this way, you can hang the new regulator in place inside the door, while locating all the other bolts to hold it in. Also, I did not have suction cups, so just used two stiff fencing wire pieces bent in an "S" shape to hold the window up.

    Thanks! My motor was shot, too, and behaved identically to this one. All the pieces are in place, I just need to attach the window bolts, as dusk draws near. (I had raised the window above the rear guide and was trying to get it back in line before I knocked off.)
    I pulled the regulator from an identical Forester in a salvage yard for $35.

    Ok follow up, you are awesome, it took me 10 mins to take it apart. 30 mins to go get the part, I only needed a motor, my actuator was fine, and 15 mins to put it back together. Unbelievable, I was so intimidated by the first stuff I was reading and seeing. So easy my 15 yr old could do it. One note if you are getting a rebuilt or even new motor make sure you save your original connector wire from the core that you have to return, I did not and had to go back to the parts store to get mine, only glitch I had really. Thanks so much this video really helped. Got it done in no time.

    The master switch went bad in ours. Turned out water had gotten into the board and corrosion resulted. I ended up getting one from the salvage yard for about half the price. Anythingvlike switcheds or controls can be gotten cheaper at a salvage yard. If the windows are open and things are exposed, forget it, you are going to find the same issue. I also grabbed some spare bulbs and fuses for next to nothing. I put them in a ziplock bag in the glove box. Its always better to have spares.

    Trick... before disassembling, try holding the window button up or down while you pound your fist on either the inside or outside of door, near where the motor sits. This worked. My symptom was I had no power to this window at all, all other windows worked.

Makes it feel like posting this type of video can actually help someone save some money if they realize it may be something they can accomplish or give confidence that it really isn't that hard despite all the "hype" of a "difficult" job. This is exactly what I was looking for. I bought a 2nd (or 20th) hand Subaru Legacy 2004 and the windows were squeaking really bad (but all worked) when I bought it. Now the back ones don't even go fully down. So I'm guessing that the motor is shot in all of them. The difference between yours and mine is that they sound like there is too much friction making them squeak and maybe not go fully down. Is there a way of telling if it is just a lubrication issue or the motor before having to buy new motors? Thanks so much this video and any suggestions you might have :)

    This video is a lifesaver! I've got an 05 as well and ordered the motor and regulator to replace myself. I've got a decent collection of tools but I'm curious as to what I'll need to get the job done when the parts get here. Socket sizes or any specialty tools?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 4 lety +1

      MrChillaxer27 im pretty sure i only used two sockets .. maybe a 10 & 12 mm (without going back and checking, but something like that.... ) for the internal hardware and track mounts etc.very simple. Phillips screwdriver or attachment for a drill... if you have a basic socket set and a screwdriver you’d be good to go. Good luck! Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it.

  • @matthewkeller9271

    If you think you need a new motor and regulator please check if its the switch first. I removed my whole assembly because i thought i needed a new one but when trying to put the window motor that i was going to replace the old one with
    in the down position it wouldn't go back up which was the original problem anyway, the window being stuck down. So after a $120 purchase of a new motor and then realizing that i bought a new switch for $11.49. Replacing the switch is infinitely less of a pain in the ass then replacing the regulator and motor assembly. So long story short just do some more research before committing to an expensive fix you may not need

    So I'm at the carwash and after the gate goes up and it's time for me to enter... I realize my window won't come back up after retrieving my credit card! Cars are patiently waiting for me to move into the cue as I'm motioning everyone to go past me... Not sure I really want to get my car washed with the driver side window stuck in the down position. I can hear the mechanism or motor turning but nothing!!! Realizing it is much better having your window stuck in the up position than down in a state where it rains all the time!!!

      If the motor is completely seized in the upward position, may be worth a look if you pull the panel/get in there- start poking around/ maybe the switch is just bad or a bad connection... if you get in there and loosen some things up you should be able to get the window down enough to get it disassembled if it is in fact the motor. May take a bit more finagling but I’m sure it’s possible.

      Joe Love I personally chose to do the whole thing because it was only about 115 bucks,and you've got to take the whole assembly out anyways. It's up to your pocketbook really. Thanks for watching!

    Why are you replacing it if its working? My window wont go down to get to the bolts...any advice on that?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 8 lety

      It was actually BARELY working, where it would go down but not up without manually tugging on it, etc.. it was time to replace it, and i chose to do the whole assembly because it was only about 115$ and i was going in there anyway... figured why not. If yours wont go down, i'd try maybe just pushing the button down, and physically pushing the window down to see if you can get any movement at all. It may be just a loose or bad switch in your case if the window does ABSOLUTELY nothing.. i'd start there.

      Thanks...I'm getting power to the motor but its not working...not sure if its easier to replace just the motor or entire regulator along with it.

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 8 lety

      once i took a look i realized that i'd be taking it all out anyway, so i figured for the (fairly low) cost of the whole assembly, to just do it all for good measure. Wasn't a hard job at all. Good luck

      Actually, I just loosened a few bolts and replaced the motor...works like a charm. Thanks for the prompt responses...

    are those 2.5" suction cups? I too will be doing this alone..

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 8 lety +1

      to be honest you could just jam something in there between window and frame... or just put a squeeze clamp on the edge of the window once it's up into place.
      in the video I'm using the mid size suction cups you can get at Harbor Freight.
      thanks for the comment ,let me know how it works out.

      +fleanine lol yeahh i found them (in black), but thanks for getting back to me! I'm going to attempt to replace the motor alone while keeping the same regulator. Will definitely keep you posted.

    @CharlesGriffith007 Před 8 lety

    doesn't that seem more like a switch problem rather than the regulator? Did you test the old regulator to see if it acted the same as when installed?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 8 lety

      +Charles Griffith The motor just got weak and crapped out ( when I pulled the motor and powered it externally, it still did the same sluggish behavior) I figured rather than take out all that stuff just to change out the motor, it was cheap enough to do both motor/regulator -and at least i know its all new stuff in there. Its been working perfectly since I did the install. Switch is fine.

    Nice video, how do we'r do this if the window motor is completely dead and the window in the closed position? Lol

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 4 lety

      If it is “stuck” closed I’m pretty sure if you pull hard enough (even without a functioning motor) it will be able to be pulled back up so you can at least close it....as long as there aren’t any issues with the glides. Otherwise same procedure...
      I appreciate your comment!

    has anyone done a replacement of just the motor without the regulator?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 6 lety

      Adam Becker it's pretty much the same process- you still need to take the whole frame out to access the motor. Maybe it's a little less expensive if you can just get the motor but, the way I see it.. it's only 116 bucks and you're going in there anyways... may as well do it all at once. :) thanks for watching!

    My window works fine apart from winding up crooked which is whats happening with mine

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  Před 4 lety

      Hmmmm.... it may be the track itself if the guide wheel wore out, maybe only one side is going up correctly. If that’s the case it’s probably a part you could get, and change out relatively easily. I’m sure if you just pull your trim panel, and have a look it may become obvious once you cycle the window up and down a few times. Good luck! Thanks for watching.

      Marco Kurek The other part that I was messing with at the 10:56 mark is the track that that the window slides up and down in and does not come with the regulator part.
