Hi Dave! I wanted to let your viewers know that the Hoya I purchased from you arrived in fabulous condition, very protected and it’s looking great in my collection! I’m looking forward to future purchases. Thanks so much.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!!
I think u r very learned..I like your wit. Do u sell your growing medium.and love your hats.
@@kathleenstrode455 Thank you! I bought that hat as a gift for my first year of sobriety. It has some miles on it. You can find my favorite growing medium in the description, linked to amazon. Big fan of what I use, and have no plans to change it 😁
I like the specific Hoya videos you do ! So many people showcase their Hoyas but don’t dive deep into their success or failures, or offer advice on how each Hoya has different water requirements.
This made my day ☺️
Me, too! ❤
I liked plant tour videos when I first got into the hobby nine years ago... When there were so many plants I hadn't seen before. Now I'm the same as you where my mind just turns off. It's just too much. I really like what you do where you show 5 to 10 plants In a genus of plants, there is a few people who do this. I wish there was more videos like that. Because it's perfect. You get to see.
Some interesting plants, But it's short enough not to get boring.
Thanks for the feedback! I kinda figured I wasn't the only one 😁
Your hoyas are stunning and you do a great job of potting and trellising. I am also tired of the unboxing videos and much prefer those that show plant chores such as repotting, spraying for bugs, etc. One learns so much from them. Thank you.
This is good news for me, since I'll never, ever be unboxing anything in front of a camera 🤣😂🤣 Thanks much, and cheers from Iowa
This has become my new favorite plant channel. I find you to be somehow equal parts helpful and seriously hilarious. So, thank you. (:
This is my favorite thing of the day!! 😊
Hi Dave, thank you so much for ALL your informative videos. I am new to Hoyas and have gotten so much information from you and just wanted to show my appreciation. Very tough getting the same variety of Hoya in the UK that you can get hold of but I keep trying.
Best houseplant chanel on CZcams
WOW! Thanks so much. And here I thought I was beyond blushing ☺
Hi Dave, This time of the year I split my time between my outdoor plantings and my houseplants, however, since finding your channel I always save time for your videos. They really are that good! 🥰. All these Hoya are gorgeous and I love your Jennifer. Some of these Hoya are on my wishlist so it was encouraging to hear you talk about their growth habits. Congratulations on the popularity of your channel! It is well deserved. 👌🪴🥰
Peggy! Good to hear from you! No outdoor anything today on yet another stormy day in Iowa City. Thanks so much for the kind words. Means soo much ☺
Thanks for confirming the counterclockwise growth. I wonder why it's so.
Oh, and I also love repot and chats for sure.
I accidentally wrapped a Hoya Caudata Sumatra clockwise around 2 bamboo hoops (used them as a tower trellis). The tip did not die off for that plant (maybe because it is such an easygoing one?), what it did in stead is wrap itself counter clockwise upwards around one of the bamboo stems and continued growing, such a smart plant!
What do you do when bamboo gets moldy in the tent?
Also… if a Hoya is potted a size up and focusses on making more roots for a while before growing more foliage, isnt that a good thing too? As more roots can bring more water and nutrients to the plant! Healthy plants 💪
I am very thankful for you sharing your plants and plant-care. Your plants look great and grow well, so what you do definitely works for you. I am sure that new as well as more seasoned Hoya growers will pick up some tips and tricks while enjoying the vids.
(The Vermont Hoyas website helped me on so many occasions in deciding to try a certain Hoya or not)
I also like repotting videos....I learn allot from them. So, thank you!
On the contrary I have never enjoyed repotting videos until I found your channel. Finally one I can take helpful information from. Even if I didn’t like hoya (Not) I would stay for the personality 💯
That is so nice! I hope I don't turn mean and bitter any time soon 🤣
Thanks so much! Agreed, root health is *everything.* As for bamboo in the tent, I do use it, but haven't had any mold ... so no advice on that. As for pot size, if I have established roots (not one of those baby plants), and I use an appropriate substrate, I've simply never had a problem growing roots AND foliage. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice comment!
You have the most amazing Hoya I truly enjoy your videos
Thanks so much ☺
Good morning Dave, love your program and your plants are espectacular.❤❤❤❤
Ahh-thank you soooo much ☺️
Fantastic video as always Dave. Of course, I had to go online to look for that Magnifica! It's gorgeous! I tried H. Jennifer twice and believe I overwatered. I'm about to look for the type trellis you use. I use the bamboo loop and ladder type but i like that the hoya can be wrapped around the trellis. Plus some of the bamboo loops come twisted which is a pain to try to straighten in the pot. Thanks for the tips as well. I like repotting videos, I tolerate unboxing meaning, I skip pass all the ripping and cutting and paper crinkling to the plant and hoya house tours depends on how the camera is used ( back and forth up and down all around 😣 sheesh!) I had been searching and searching for some satisfying tips and advice for a long time on hoyas instead of parrroted info, so glad I came upon your videos!👍Dee, NY
Hi, Dee! Thanks so much for the compliment ☺ Are you talking about the metal trellises I use? Those are from my DIY trellis video, if so. czcams.com/video/Y8E2SMalYA4/video.htmlsi=g23Wz9UgkclxF30F. Always good to have you aboard 😁
@@soberplantguy oh that's right! I remember the fyi trellis... I'm not even going to try lol, unless I can get hubby to make for me. There are the obelisk type on Amazon but way too tall. 👍🏽
I love seeing all the different kinds of Hoyas you keep! Great videos!
You are the Hoya king 👑 😢💚💚💚🪴🌿👌🏻 Natalie
🤣maybe more like court jester? Thanks Natalie, good to hear from you again!
Good morning Dave,beautiful plants ❤❤
Thanks so much, and good morning back to you ☺
What a way to start my day, enjoying a cup of coffee and your video. You share such interesting facts I never knew and funny inserts. I washed all my plants with that soap mix. It took me 4 1/2 hours. Do you do yours all at once or split them up. They look and smell great. Thank you for your videos and sharing your experiences with us.
What a nice comment to (continue) my morning! I'd say it takes us about the same amount of time to treat our collections. I typically break it down to the upstairs collection, which includes the tent, and the downstairs collection. Ends up being one container per floor. Hope the coffee is waking you up more than my tea is 🤣😂🤣
David Chamberlin is the one that said Australis Lisa needs 15 hrs of light a day to bloom!
Interesting! On his website he puts it at 12 hours, but I'll take your word that he's also said 15. I didn't know he gave *any* plant that much light. I, would not 😉
@@soberplantguy Without looking at his video, I thought he said 15 hrs....maybe I heard wrong. BTW, your info has really helped me in knowing what makes a Hoya happy. I've changed my grow lights, soil mix, fertilizer, insect treatment (bathing with tea tree soap, etc.) and feel like I'm on the right track as I see allot of new growth. I've not however invested in rabbit wire to make trellis'. Also, I am using self-watering pots which are all plastic, not terra-cotta, and my plants seem to thrive in them. Just wish those pots weren't so darned expensive!
@@shirleycovey7309 They do cost an arm and a leg! And I'm glad you're not using terracotta--it's a terrible idea 🤣 (But seriously, it is.)
I'm so glad the channel is helping! That, at the end of the day, is my goal. And to make you laugh. That'd be good, too.....
Thanks! Very helpful.
Ok so I just added H. Jennifer to my wishlist 😁. I recently (last week) picked up H. Ricardo and the leaves are on the limp side. It came to me via mail so I’m waiting to see if it acclimates. I’ll be checking the roots soon. Do you have this Hoya by chance and if so? Curious what the leaf texture should be. I love your Hoya content.
No, but that is on my very, very, very short list. I'm trying to buy some seeds from Ric as we speak/write 😁 He's such a very talented grower. Jennifer is absolutely awesome. Bought that one from a friend as an after thought, and she's one of my all-time best. Cheers from Iowa ☺
Ok Dave. My head is spinning. So I have been pondering this theory of counterclockwise trellising. I have Hoyas that go up a u trellis. Eventually I have one going clockwise and one counter clockwise - although I try not to secure it until it has enough growth to go back up. Hmmm. Where did this come from?
Also now I want to buy this fence and try it out on my thicker stemmed Hoyas. Which ones does it not work on? I don’t mean ones you would let hang like Lacunosa.
I must say you are making me rethink my game. Having few but better display. Please do a tent set up video? I need to do one desperately! ❤
Yes for sure on the tent.
Miro said he’s had a few Hoya grow counterclockwise, but I haven’t, yet. They may point that direction out of the pot, but eventually all of my have self “corrected”.
As to the trellis, it works in everything…. unless the stems have gotten woody, or thicker/stiffer in general.
Cheers 😊
Have you ever used an orb for a trellis? I’d love to see a video on that, sometime! Great video! 😊
I haven't, but I bet they can be made to look really great. Maybe something like Mathilde?
Really appreciate your channel ❤🌹TY for listing products & links you use. Will likely purchase fm you. New to Hoya, trying not to catch the hoya fever but it's difficult. Sure hope you weren't affected by those tornadoes!
Hey, thanks! I'm filming a video today on those very products. No tornadoes here in Iowa City, fortunately. Cheers ☺
I would love to buy a plant from you, your hoya are gorgeous! I have a few hoya, my favorite is my crimson princess, curtisii, parasitica, and krinkle 8. I have a couple more that I am struggling with, a pubera that was doing great, and now is not, I have prop'd a few pieces to save her, and a multiflora that I just got, it had 2 in the pot, and one is trying to die on me. but we are working with it.
I have some pretty cute props, if the urge ever strikes. I'm at soberplantguy@gmail.com. Always happy to shoot over a list, pics. Cheers ☺
Loving your videos. Could you do a propagation video of your Hoya plant?
Yes! I’m working on a Hoya care guide that will cover propagation. I do it a couple or so ways depending on circumstance, and the actual species/cultivar. Cheers from Iowa !
Thank you for another very helpful video ☺️
You have so beautiful plants, love it❤❤❤
Many thanks, Cecilia ☺
Hi Dave, greetings from Sri Lanka! Great video again. I'm new to your channel as I just started collecting Hoyas. I love the fact that you delve deeper into the plants, including the history, native region etc etc. I'm also researching into the plants that I've got and want to know everything about them. Where do you find information about where a particular plant was discovered and later described scientifically? Just curious.
Hello, again! I'd say that powo.science.kew.org is one of the greatest resources out there, as is vermonthoyas.com Be well
💚💚💚
My Jennifer is a slow grower...so what am I doing wrong? Lol
By the way, I have been smiling every since the initial LMAO of the bra commentary at the start. 😅 You definitely had and kept my attention...another great video!
I really think I just got a really, really good plant, genetically speaking. Otherwise, it's just my normal care with my normal products. Just lucky?
@@soberplantguy I think I'll have to start with a few of the tips I learned along the way from this series. I don't have a grow tent...but I do have a bathroom that I have basically turned into a greenhouse 😅 It's where I have my anthiriums. I think putting it in there may help make a difference 🤔 But it sounds like more light might be required!
@@mrs.keeton9371 I've found that my (somewhat may, now) Jennifers are pretty insensitive to how much light they get--from the brightest spot, to the darkest, they grow about the same. One got a bit photo bleached. That humidity may well be the answer. Do let me know!
@soberplantguy excellent to hear actually! The humidity I can change easily just by switching its location. I will absolutely let you know if that's the trick. Thank you!
Hello I LOVE your vids! How do you handle when your Hoya reaches the top of the trellis? Do you then repot or extend?
Thanks so much! One technique is to loosen clips, lower the vine, and keep wrapping. Another is to let the vine get long, and then gently bend it down toward the bottom (just make sure there enough loose vine to point up). Finally, yes, sometimes ya just gotta re-trellis. Cheers from Iowa!
How do u decide which hoya to trellis n which ones to trail?
Some Hoya just seem to hang very naturally, like Mathilde, Sunrise, Obscura, etc. Others send out runners that aggressively try to climb and wrap around anything and everything--those I consider mandatory to trellis just for management. Then others, like the Jennifer in this video, would go either way, but would take up a TON of room if not trellised. Hanging would be good, but it's still about real estate. Cheers from Iowa!
I can’t seem to post a picture but someone else did under a different video, a comprehensive list
@@wootlesswocks care to name that someone 🤣
@@AhmadAsrafHashim I will look for it, I am new to really commenting on the CZcams
@@AhmadAsrafHashim ok if you look back at his which one of these Hoyas is a mandatory addition video I ask the same question, and another lovely user posted a list in that thread.
I'm going to have to have a Jennifer!!!!! She is beautiful!!!!!
Yes, yes you need to have one 😁 I bought this from a friend on a whim, and boy howdy am I glad I did. Cheers from Iowa!
Dave, where do you sell your cuttings/propagations?
Hello! FB locally here in Iowa, or people email me at soberplantguy@gmail.com if they want photos of something specific. Happy to ship. Cheers, and I promise not to call you peaches 🤣😂🤣
Haha… I should have held my question for a few minutes 😅
Repotting videos are my favorite! I like watching them while I do my own plant chores. I like if the CZcamsr talks about educational topics or just talks about personal stories like Charmaine on @unplantparenthood does.
@@Aquamarine.Aubrey I'll have to check out Charmaine! Thanks for the comment ☺

Also, I agree with you - no hauls or unboxing videos please. I skip right past them.
I don’t mind seeing those types of video, especially if it’s a Hoya that is new or not often kept in collections
Dearest Dave I just looked ve your advice and especially enjoy your sense of humor and appreciate your Hoya advice, however, your email address is not to be found. I would dearly love some cuttings. I am an experienced grower with a plant room of my own. Currently transitioning to out doors. Anyway this was all to let you know I need your email address so I can buy some. Thanks do much.
Hi, Kathryn. Sorry for the snafu (and thanks for the kind words!). soberplantguy@gmail.com is where I can be found. Cheers from Iowa ☺
@@soberplantguy no problem I learned to love the guys from Iowa from a wonderful guy I dated when I graduated college. He was a wonderful radio DJ and I loved him a lot. So he was a very good rep for you guys from Iowa.
