    Donald Davis, master storyteller
"On Friday, November 19, 2004, City Club of Portland welcomes internationally renowned master storyteller Donald Davis in ""Things We Say in Company: How Stories Unite Communities.""
Davis, who was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories, will share how his craft can be an effective way for citizens and leaders to connect with their community.
“It's to help celebrate the common,"" he says. ""That is, the stories that we relate to are not as much about the weird, onetime occurrences as they are about the ordinary things that happen to everybody over and over and over again.... All of a sudden, it's building a common bond between people and not leaving us thinking that we're living all alone by ourselves. So I think it's a great bridge-builder that every time we hear someone else's story, we can't dislike them as much.""
It's community building in a very traditional way.
Davis says, ""If you know someone's story, you know them better than just where they work, where they live, and what they do for a living. This is how we truly know someone best. We then work better together and we are better equipped to get through crisis situations and difficult times-collectively. We can come together to help each other through the bad times.""
