- In this episode of Editorial, Senior Correspondent Shubham Chohan looks at the Karnataka government's latest move to hike fuel prices. The Congress government led by CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar hiked petrol prices by Rs 3 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.04 per litre. This comes as the state's expenses for the five guarantees it promised during the election. Are these freebies hurting the state's finances?

Karnataka is benefitting from the free bees, we pay more than any state in comes of tax, the centre has emptied our pockets, so any form of free bees have saved so many lives and their livelihood, hope they continue the same

I’m from Maharashtra and I lived in Bangalore for the last 2 years and fuel Karnataka was much cheaper than the price of fuel in Maharashtra (petrol: ₹105/l), Tamil Nadu (petrol: ₹104/l) and AP (petrol: around ₹105/l). So, this hike seems fair.
Freebies do not work. No matter what party is doing it (and all of BJP, Cong and TMC, among others do it). It is votebank politics. It reduces labor participation. It increases tax burden on middle class. If you really want to help the poor and middle class, reduce taxes, increase subsidies on essentials.
Rich get loan waivers & tax refunds. So no problem

Don't sing the same tune.. If a state like Karnataka can't manage funds for day to day operations,, don't blame centre.. You can blame centre for denial of funds for infrastructure, etc..
But in the present budget there was not a single big ticket infra announcement, yet there is a debt of 1,06,000 Cr

Govt plans to auction thousands of acres to raise funds.
There are talks of bus fare hike saying it hasn't been hiked since 2020.. I mean it is the same plank on which Congress argued that the inflation is hurting and there is price rise,, Now suddenlty there is no price rise :)
The affidavit / rental agreement which used to cost around 100 Rs is now 500 Rs as per some people. -- I haven't verified.
Next year property tax hike,, guidance value hike
Last but not the least,, liquor is the costliest in Karnataka.. It was increased to such an extent that volumes started going down, and so they reduced it a little.
What can we call this model ?

you might be a well off person..the kind of impact GST and covid in the livelihood of people is very high…and also bjp has always unfair distribution of tax revenue to states where they are not in power..freebies does help people in many cases…i am definitely against free electricity …free transport for women also encourages labor participation and also they can save money..there are people misusing freebies but most of them will be benefited..i was also thinking the same when freebies were given in tamilnadu but some of them are long term investment
Taxes by themselves are not a problem, but Bengaluru people also pay high EMI, for their expensive houses because too much congestion is raising house prices. Politicians benefit from these high prices due to their nexus with builder mafia.
Karnataka should be spending on alternate cities like Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum. Encourage people to migrate away from Bengaluru, to cheaper cities. This will bring down house prices and EMI.
Stop freebies, stop hiking petrol, electricity, water prices.

@@ssabt12 In last 10 months, everything from road tax, stamp duty, milk, real estate guidance values, electricity cost, registration, excise tax have been increased. farmers have to pay money for things like transformers now which used to be free. With all these still they could not fund freebies, now resorting to fuel tax and water tax is coming up soon. Was there no state government before this one? how were they running the show without these extra taxes on people?

Our state tax contributions to Center is much more than any other northern states but we receive less than .30 paisa for every 1️⃣ rupee that we contribute to Center
Because of Center unfair tax repayments to state. People of Karnataka have to bear the cost increase

The problem for Karnataka was center never paid the drought expense. It takes the 2nd highest amount of GST. Added to this is migration from the north. Your report is half baked as you never touched upon these aspects.

If you breakdown GST collection in Karnataka, Mahadevapura in Bengaluru contributes the highest GST in all Karnataka by huge margin.. That constituency is full of people who migrated to Bengaluru mainly IT, knowledge workers..

It may be true that due to too many freebess, the Karnataka govt, but still the Bangalore people voted criminals like Suriya.
The Karnataka should stop giving dibsidery to poor for one or one and half lakhs to poor house wife as no poor is living in Bangalore. Even the house who worked in houses are getting 4 to 5 thousends every houses and they are working nearly four to five houses every month besides her husband children
Stop free bus pass to women travellers and they should be charged atleast minimum of Rs1 per ticket
The free distribution of rice to below poverty only. Those whose family earned monthly between 35000 to 50000 should be charged minimum of Rs 3 to 5 those who getting morethan 5 kilos as there is Noor in Bangalore City
These schemes should be given to remote villages where there is no opportunity to earn even the minimum amount
Unless the State Govt financially they could achieve many infratural development
Do not pay the central taxes from states as central govt in return not paying anything especially opposition ruled state. What ever the State collected by way of taxes it should be used only for that particular states only as union govt has various sources of collecting taxes
