      This is incredible. I'd like to make one, but worry about the strength of the gears. How hard would it be to break?

      Thanks for producing the plans. Between them, the video and the build article, the process is very clear. I'm in the middle of the build right now. I didn't see a way to contact you on your website so I came here. Unless I'm missing something, I think I found an error in your plans. The Parts 1 page shows the spindle measures 2 1/2" where it goes into the clear cover. Parts 5 gives the diameter of the hole in the clear cover as 2 3/4" which is the same as the outer diameter of the spindle. I had to remake the plexiglas cover. Thanks again.

      Why two handles?
      Is there an advantage to having two handles, instead of using only one handle attached to the center gear?
      Any particular reason for there being 19 teeth on the gears, as opposed to any other number of teeth?
      :

    • @stellarjayatkins4749
      @stellarjayatkins4749 Před 2 lety

      My only critique is I don’t see the need or purpose for two handles, just the gears connecting the two shafts. The handles seem to almost collide when turning, and risk rapping your knuckles or just getting in the way. One handle seems perfectly sufficient.

    12:30 I think you’re the best. I see these projects more as learning lessons and appreciation of the history/common sense ingenuity that bore their development rather than building a power tool that has the same “power”, longevity, or ability that store bought tools have.
    In many countries, where our store bought furniture is being made, the craftsmen are working with power tools that don’t match the professionalism or quality being shown in these videos.

    John, incredible build! I’m just a beginner wood worker and am always amazed at what you can build with wood. Your videos have inspired me to try new things. Coming from a family of woodworkers I never really started working with wood until recently. I’m the mechanical one of the family! Now that I’m in my mid 50s, I am starting to appreciate wood working more and more and because of your videos I look forward to building all kinds of things. I have definitely made my mistakes and what a great way to learn. Knowing that the best wood workers even make mistakes gives me a lot more confidence and I keep going. Thanks for all the videos and I look forward to seeing more.

    Really nice work John. Thanks. A note on acrylic, it's generally not a good idea to use countersunk screws as the plastic is prone to crazing and cracking. The stresses under a countersunk screw head will do this if overtightened. Another approach, if you want the screw heads flush to the surface, is to counterbore and use pan head or button head hardware. Again, very nice!

This is definitely one of my favorite channels and I'll be ordering those plans for sure it just so happens the end vice on one of my benches went out of whack (thanks to someone constantly over tightening odd shaped pieces on the work end) so this will be a cool edition to my shop. I'm going to get a little crazy with it and use exotic wood veneers of the gears and instal LED's in them so I can have a light show every time I plane down a neck blank.
