This is such a great analysis!!!!! I admired this character alot right from the start of the trilogy. Although its one of the greatest movies out there, I still think that it doesn't highlight lives and POVs of most of the side characters which may have left some areas blank that needed to filled somehow. I was always fond of this character and I liked this character more than Michael's. Tom Hagen is quite sharp, efficient, smart and quite literally always makes the right decision. He could've become the don if only he was related to the Coreleone family by blood.

Well said. Yes Tom Hagen is a character (like others) that keeps the viewer glued to the screen throughout. I guess, as with all movies there isn’t enough time to delve into each character as much as we’d like sometimes!

Duvall absolutely played the role perfectly.

Vito, Hagen, and Vincent Mancini represent children from broken homes. Their parents died when they were young. Those three men, more than any of the other Corleones, appreciate true families that love and sacrifice for each other to make their lives together the best it could possibly be.

Then they didnt want to pay the money to get him in godfather 3. Even the production company overlooked the importance of Tom Hagan

According to Robert Duvall, when Frnacis Ford Coppolla came to see him to discuss Godafther 3, Coppolla was "more interested in getting my mothers special crab cake recipe then he was in having me in the movie".

@AvySparks what?? Surely not he's the closest thing to a brother he had left unless maybe Francis wanted him michael to be alone and far away from his former life and familiars

When people denigrate Godfather 3, it's almost always because of Sofia Coppola's bad acting. And she isn't a good actor, but she's not too terrible either. The real casting problem wasn't Sofia, it was that Robert Duvall wasn't in Godfather 3. Paramount offered him an insulting amount to do the film so he refused. As a result the script suffered because Michael needs to be contrasted with his family members to make the fabric of the story rich. So, in 3, neither the Don, Mama, Sonny, Fredo and Tom are in the story, nor the other great secondary characters like Clemenza, Tessio, Rocco, and Frankie. I don't even dislike 3, if it didn't have to live up to its legacy it'd be viewed as a good film. The biggest problem with 3 is there's no Tom Hagen.

Well said. Godfather 3 has the misfortune of living in its predecessors shadows but you’re right, it is a good film. Just a shame it could have had the makings of another classic if the casting/story had been more considered

Tom couldn't became Don. He didn't have willing to became bloody monster and seems to be too weak for murderous characters around
