Thank you very much for all the information, much appreciated. I've spent years, over a decade, talking to and begging the VA for direction and guidance to start my own SDVOSB business and EVERYONE I CAME INTO CONTACT WITH WERE NOT VERY HELPFUL. That's why I started my own because I got tired of waiting for the VA. You've given me more information then I've ever received from them. I hate to say that because they're supposed to be my brothers and sisters, having each other's back as veterans, but that has not been the case at all. Thanks again for these very informative videos.
It's not so much that they do not care, but more that they are a Bureaucracy and have stock answers that do not necessarily apply to your situation. VETtoCEO is another program online that teaches much of the same content, and I highly recommend the program to anyone interested.
Thank you very much for the information especially the 8A set a side. You made this program seem quite easy to in roll into so please detail this enrollment more in dept. I know would greatly appreciate that.
You have any videos on cert. payrol and Davis bacon wages? I feel like a lot of contractors especially subs feel overwhelmed or confused with union work. When cold calling or shopping for new subs a lot of them get turned off by the idea of rate jobs when I’m reality it’s very simple. Just a suggestion for video if you haven’t already made one. Thanks again
Does the LLC of the company itself need to be split at least 51% owned by an economically or social disadvantaged person? What do they look at when they look for 51% ownership?
I am a commercial real estate broker with 20 years experience. I own my company 100%. I just completed the SDVOSB process this week. Any idea our thought on possible contracts you have seen? I know I am the only one in my field as a disabled veteran in my state. I am working with a state rep. Just getting completed and somewhat excited about the possibilities.
If I’m understanding you correctly there are two steps to 8a, 1 is the certification and 2 is the full program. If I only certify ( but don’t trigger the 9 year clock by starting the program), can I still win set aside bids as 8a?
Thank you so much for creating very helpful videos! Question on 8a certification, we are single member llc, me and my wife. I'm US citizen but my wife is not yet, can our business be considered more than 51% ownership? Thank you!!
Hello Derek, what would be the classification or title of business , if you wanted to provide product, Example: clothing or food, can goods or grain or for military
What about woman owned SDVO? Would you have to certify as woman and as SDV to get both? Or can you not combine any of the two together for your small business?
I'm not sure. You can test this (and any other industry ideas) using the Proof of Concept exercise in my training (free). You're asking the right questions, keep at it. Training- bit.ly/4bZIggQ

Would you be willing to connect for a few questions?

Thank you so much can we apply for the 8(a) and women owned also? Or would it be under women’s owned and minority application all at once like you stated under the women application? Thanks for all your help
Hello Derek. Like all your videos, this is great/useful content. I have purchased your consulting book and workbook (extremely useful) and am in the process of writing my first contract proposal. It is a total small business set aside. Question for this video, the fifth set aside that you did not discuss is "Total Small Business." Does this just have to do with the size of the business? What does total small business mean? If I do not qualify for any of the 4 set asides you discussed, should I even consider the contract?
It just means anyone who is a small business can bid on it. There’s nothing special you have to do to get it, you are automatically default. I don’t want to confuse people so that’s why.
Good afternoon I have a trucking company and storage Warehouse I was just wondering how I go about getting subcontracting work because I don't have a high performance to be a prime contractor so I was trying to subcontract work for the government I'm already registered in Sam all that's done.
@@GovKidMethod It can... in a sense. You can hold both, but technically if you are going for a 8(a), having the SDVOSB should not technically berifit you over any other entity that does not have it.
@@jeffg6924 It's not in a sense, it's very real. If you are an 8a and SDVOSB, both contracting small business goals can be met by working with your company. They will benefit on 8a goals and SDVOSB goals by working with your company. It's not one or the other. Also, it allows you as a company to pursue both 8(a) and SDVOSB set-aside contracts. And don't get me started on how much it can benefit you in sole-source/direct award strategy by having both.
You just need to make sure there is no conflict of interest on any of the procurements you are bidding/working on. Always best to double check with your small business office (OSDBU) Liaison as well! Congrats on getting started!
You have to maintain your HUBZone status every 3 years, and inspections are random during that time. So moving should not be a problem if you keep your status up to date with the SBA. HUBZones can also be re-designated, so moving may be the only way to maintain your HUBZone status.
Aloha from Hawaii Derek. I'm in the process of starting my own business and obtaining my general contractors license. What would you recommend the best program to join that i can bid govcons asap. The 8a looks good, but i would need 2 years of business initially. Thanks.
Absolutely! From the sound of it, you would be a great candidate. There is also a lot of opportunity for Vets with the Dept of Veteran Affairs. Check out my website www.govkidmethod.com I have more resources there and come join our facebook group (on website). Thank you for your service.

This is great content. Thank you! What do you recommend if you qualify both as a Veteran and as a disadvantaged citizen? Can you register as both or do you have to choose?
I've been competing for SDVOSB for two years now, and I have found out that there is a ton of fraud. Companies claim to be SDVOSB, but have not started or completed the CVE process of certification to gain the set-aside. I see so many awards granted to companies that do not qualify. There is a check box in the SAM setup, but this does NOT qualify you as SDVOSB. The certification is intense and takes nearly a year. Does anyone know about legal actions that can be taken for fraudulent awards?
You are correct, it's a very intense certification! You should protest those awards: www.gao.gov/legal/bid-protests/faqs/ I'm glad you brought this up. I just did a video about companies misusing their set-asides and one of the companies I covered was an SDVOSB. Here is the video link to that: czcams.com/video/Uba6-i8Hmrc/video.html
@@GovKidMethod I would highly recommend filing a local protest with the agency contracting officer before filing with GAO. Your local protest can request the winning bidder prove their SDVOSB status by providing a DD214 that shows a service related disability or a letter from the VA stating eligibility. If the vendor can not provide that, the contracting officer will sustain your local protest. That is a far faster, easier and no cost alternative to filing with GAO.
It all depends on what type of business you're getting into. Businesses that require a lot of overhead or that depend on you holding a lot of inventory can have higher barriers to entry compared to something like Professional Services where you just have to pay employees
