    Donnie and Nicole Chiu-Wang loved the location of their San Francisco studio, but they desperately needed to make its 537 square feet feel more spacious. To do that, they turned their attention to the 13-foot ceiling. Having watched online videos of cleverly designed moving walls in small New York City apartments, they thought that there must be a way to use their space more efficiently too.
    Donnie reached out to an architect friend, who offered to take on the dilemma with another friend. The pair came up with a prefabricated multipurpose loft that freed up square footage, and includes two beds, a stand-up desk, a dining table and plenty of storage.

    Everything is great except for 2 things:
    1. The bed is not safe. You need to add safety bars or something.
    2. The standing desk. Too depressing at that corner.

    • @yuenyuen95
      @yuenyuen95 Před 7 lety +309

      1. Actually the bed is quite safe, its even harder to roll off that edge than to roll off a normal bed. And most people dun roll off beds. (Trust me, I had those concerns before but I stayed at a similar style loft once and it felt really secure)
      2. I think he intentionally wanted a standing desk. Some research have shown that standing desks are better for posture and helps you to be be more productive at work. They also have some height adjustable chairs (at the dining table part), I think those chairs can be used at the standing desk too.

It helped boost my creativity and how I would use certain things and put this and that where and the thing I noticed with most houses was that no one used the airspaces. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to notice because it gives a lot of inspirations for building/designing better houses in the future.

      Nah, that'd get in the way when you want to watch tv from your bed. I suggest a net that comes out from the walll and encircles the bed area, catching you if you do lose balance or get busy ;) hahahaha

    • @maimee2angel
      @maimee2angel Před 7 lety +9

      anyway you can see there's quite a space between the bed and the edge of the board. If you roll off the bed, you still fall on the loft board. If you don't wake up after that & still manage to roll over the edge... are you drunk?

    • @amandanance919
      @amandanance919 Před 7 lety +1

      I don't think you would because the bed doesn't fill all of the loft area, so you would have to fall off the bed onto the floor of the loft, then continue rolling off the loft haha

    I live in a 98sqft apartment. My bed is up in a loft. I am single so this suits me well. The only problem is, I need to get use to downsizing. I do have a lot of stuff and clothes. So I am still working on that. I have huge vertical space so I am going to explore the possibility of vertical storage.

    • @leanneb9529

      I've never heard of a 98 square foot apartment. I can't imagine it. The smallest I've ever seen is about 300 square feet. You should do a video of your apartment. That would be very interesting.

      @flintlights Před 7 lety +3

      +T0BBi94 dining table along with the chairs needs to be pulled and put back from their walls space, a little tight corner for the computer where you have to stand while using it, pulling out the projector and screen for tv, boxes that needs to be tucked away and organized to make it look neat. And idk, maybe a few other things too

    • @gwarlow
      @gwarlow Před 7 lety +4

      flintlights Some people "need" less than others.

    • @T0BBi94
      @T0BBi94 Před 7 lety +9

      flintlights As Gordon said some people doesnt NEED a dining table to eat, you could just sit elsewhere. Using the computer standing up is prefered by many and some studies have shown it keeps you alert and makes you live longer (no joke). Pulling down a projector screen is done in a second. And if someone doesnt have boxes that are tucked away in their house Then they dont own any stuff.
      Because everything is organised and you can get to what you need faster due to shorter "walking" distance this apartment is more practical than most houses.

    • @lemmontree6638
      @lemmontree6638 Před 7 lety +2

      +flintlights dining table takes two minutes to pull out, he wanted his computer that way, not everybody watches tv every day, as for organization.... Any type of organization takes time and typically it's worth the effort.

    • @shaldana
      @shaldana Před 7 lety +32

      Actually, not true. Society (and Walmart) WANTS us to think babies need a ton of junk. They don't. At all. Babies are a multi-billion dollar business due to all the junk. Babies need very little. Unfortunately, mass marketing has convinced 99% of parents otherwise.

    • @iamuglypeople
      @iamuglypeople Před 7 lety

      Very true. Babies only really NEED the essentials. Nappies, food, clothes, bed, and of course a few things to play with and learn from. That really takes up minimal space. These days people buy too much in to all the extra unnecessary stuff (I did too) and that's why it's easy to believe that babies need it, when infact they don't. The same goes for adults really...that's why I enjoy seeing the incredible ways people utilise a small space for living. :)
