Donnie and Nicole Chiu-Wang loved the location of their San Francisco studio, but they desperately needed to make its 537 square feet feel more spacious. To do that, they turned their attention to the 13-foot ceiling. Having watched online videos of cleverly designed moving walls in small New York City apartments, they thought that there must be a way to use their space more efficiently too.
Donnie reached out to an architect friend, who offered to take on the dilemma with another friend. The pair came up with a prefabricated multipurpose loft that freed up square footage, and includes two beds, a stand-up desk, a dining table and plenty of storage. - Jak na to + styl

i feel like raising a kid in a studio would be like " WHATEVER MOM I'M GOING TO MY ROOM" *walks two feet away*
Is it weird how I enjoy watching house/apartment tour like this? Not like in a vlog but a tour like this. It's like asmr for me.
dw same
same I like watching these
ikr it's weird
Micole Sola yeah I do that too
I like the loft space but afraid I'd roll off.
sameeee
same
tiffany xD
same
That's why if I get that house my husband will be on the edge
i'd love this as a university student, but not really as a family space
That is legit my dream studio!!! High ceilings, convertible loft space, and a projection! Nice!
agree i was totally impress i know want to live there
id roll off
Everything is great except for 2 things:
1. The bed is not safe. You need to add safety bars or something.
2. The standing desk. Too depressing at that corner.
1. Actually the bed is quite safe, its even harder to roll off that edge than to roll off a normal bed. And most people dun roll off beds. (Trust me, I had those concerns before but I stayed at a similar style loft once and it felt really secure)
2. I think he intentionally wanted a standing desk. Some research have shown that standing desks are better for posture and helps you to be be more productive at work. They also have some height adjustable chairs (at the dining table part), I think those chairs can be used at the standing desk too.
If he wants to sit he can move over one of the bar stools
The railing of the stair is not well designed. It looks cool though it might hurt you
+RaMahOhhlala E-Any Their at the double sided bench.
José Moe How many times have you fallen off the side of your bed? So far, the number is zero for me...
Why are people saying "you're gonna fall off" well not really when was the last time you fell out of your floor bed
Thank you finally someone (I have a loft bed)
I used roll off my bed all the time, actually. But now I barricade myself in body pillows and blankets so I can't.
You make a good point
Yesterday...
I did a week ago. I used to move heaps at night and I happened to sleepwalk as well, so yeah...
that whiteboard code, someone had fun writing fake code for the show.
that's why i'm like why was he writing coffee and carrots
+InfinitWorld haha that was the shopping list that she was talking about. Nathan is referring to the 'while(sleepy), fillCup()' type of stuff elsewhere on the board
Nathan Davis yeah the properties of fill coffee what app is he developing an educational coffee game
Just wish there were safety bars
yes that's so important!
Your the kind of person this world needs more of!
yes!
safety first, prepare for the worst
Elma Lin u can put railings ya know
Joke's on you, I believed everything this tiny loft can do.
This is soooo futuristic......... although it's a tiny bit small, it is just goals
ikr!
I have wanted a loft so bad this made me really want one and make my dream come true
I would want one but I would be scared of spiders being to close to me :/
I have a loft and no spiders come near me, if you want one don't worry about that happening :)
I have a lot of spiders in my house though, and I have a only top bunk bed which I have already had spiders at before :/
Don't fall off ur bed
Lol yes. A railing might be nice
Omg I was thinking the same thing
I have never fallen of my normal bed (at least not anymore since I am 9) so how likely is it to fall of the loft bed? Especially since there still is a bit of wood "floor" next to the mattress
I go camping frequently with my family, and we have a camper with a bunkhouse. The bed is half of a twin size, and there is no extra floor space next to it, and I have never fallen off of it, and I move a lot in my sleep. It's pretty much impossible for them to fall off if they aren't pushed off lop
I promise, promptly clicked my mind too.
one of the best designs I've ever seen!!!
me to I love this stuff
Mika Chan Sailor ye
So Beautiful house
i love this type of compact space with everything there :)
Mika Chan Sailor Except that you might roll of the top 😂
Lol I would roll off my bed
Right? I would be so paranoid. They should install a barrier or something.
Does anyone really fall out of their bed? I never have.
i was thinking the same😂 they should put up something so that they dont end up falling
+MakeMeThinkAgain My sister's bed is twice the size of mine and she still manages to fall off. So... yes😂
+rowelle they have a panel next to the bed that would prob stop them from falling straight off
With all the 'custom' built stuff would it not be extremely expensive?
no because there's two people living in a studio apartment. their rent is probably super cheap so they can get this and they'll still be saving in the long run
That's what I thought as well!
I think they live in SF... since the apartment is actually pretty nice and rent is crazy in this city as it is I would bet their rent is pretty expensive :/
They probably own it. I doubt they were able to make so much modifications while leasing it.
he said in the beginning "when i first bought the place"
I would love to live in something like that.
I love loft spaces. Smaller, easier to work with, more efficient.... And this one is excellent.
This is exactly the kind of place where I would like to live. Get me a space like this in New York City.
That's the problem in most small apartments or houses. Nobody has thought about using the actual airspace which is just wasted. This is a great idea in helping to utilize what isn't being used. This helps to give me some ideas of what to do with my own space as well. :)
Not all the apartments have high ceilings...
+Myria83 I didn't say they all do. :/
I know! I mean me loving games and everything makes it great for computer use and therefore designing programs and whatnot. I even got into minecraft when I was around 13-14 and under. It helped boost my creativity and how I would use certain things and put this and that where and the thing I noticed with most houses was that no one used the airspaces. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to notice because it gives a lot of inspirations for building/designing better houses in the future.
She was quite generous with "giving" him the closet space under the loft lol! 😂 I love the layout!
The loft is nice and functional but I think I'll still b very conscious of how small the loft actually is
Ka Yin He yeah its small but it has a lot of purposes
Ka Yin He yeah, I prefer a lot of space when I'm working on something and if I'm in there I'd probably feel crowded.
OMG I would love that loft!!
Same
Wow. It is like they molded their lives to be on interior design shows. They sound so happy, about design and organizing things. Very good.
no guardrail on the loft? i'd fall to a very unpleasant awakening!
When I would sleep in a camper I would fall in the middle of the night and I wouldn't know I fell
I have never fallen of my normal bed (at least not anymore since I am 9) so how likely is it to fall of the loft bed? Especially since there still is a bit of wood "floor" next to the mattress
Ami I have fallen out of my bed (: very unpleasant. I tend to move about alot. I have custom linnen that stays on the madrass otherwise I end up in a knot with my cover and linnen
+Ami so true
But, then bed didn't take up all the space so if you rolled off, you would hit the wood first and most likely you would wake up.
Cool use of the space, but would like to see the bathroom.. I see there are two other doors in the apartment, one on each side of the entrance door. I guess the bathroom is behind the murphy bed, but whats behind the door in the kitchen? Pantry/washing room?
Would love more videos like this :)
They're such a cute couple, and the loft is sooo cooool~
How can he work standing
I actually feel more productive that way. It's probably better for you in the long run too
i cant stand for long, i get too tired, and im not fat 😒 so dont ask
How can he stand working?
I assume that when he's tires he just takes one of those long black chairs that they put on the dining table.
Probably better for his health than having an office chair. Sitting down all day does bad for the body.
I hope none of them ever fall out of bed at night.
I want a loft now
Lol me too!
No u don't I have one it is SOOO annoying every morning and night u have to climb up and down at first I LOVED IT but then a month later it was just annoying
same. i basically have this set up. i just have a different ladder. i usually end up sleeping on a cushion under it. my top deck(?) is now a pile of my garbage.
I have a loft and it's the best!! I really don't mind the ladder like some people apparently do..
where's the bathroom?
they mentioned there's one earlier, and how it was the only separate space
I was thinking when they were sitting on the loft bed watching tv " oh my goodness imagine jumping off of that thing " lol my mind is crazy!
excellent design and use of space
Great place, great couple and great design!
He probably paid a ton of money for this small space given that it's SF~
He's probably making 6 figures given he's working in the tech industry in SF.
Xiao H. Why people resort to these measures just to reside in a certain area is something I don't understand
beautiful. not only the loft, but also the people in this vid
Wow, this place is gorgeous in every possible way
how does he work while standing up
I know right
It takes a little bit of getting used to, but it's actually quite comfortable if your desk is a perfect height.
I my self like sitting down, but a lot of studies show it's better to stand and some people actually like to work while standing up.
They may also have a chair in case he wants to sit down and work.
only possible if the working time is not long? imagine standing for 5 hours....hardcore programmer can code overnight...so yeah
he could always bring a chair there
If you don't have kids, you can stay there and be forever free and happy! Get a dog.
💚💜💚
Its an apartment they probably cant
+Country Horse
lol I live in an apt, they allow dogs in some places !
NO WAY there is no space for the dog to run and live
You take the dog outside. Hello!!!!
They are the owners of the apartment. They wouldn't be so determined to stay there so long if they didn't own it. Plus making mods like that would probably not be possible if they were simply renting the place. Some people rent houses & some people own apartments. A dog would be nice but in such a small space I'd get a cat or maybe a guniea pig.
I like everything except that standing workspace! :(
Also it was just a laptop plugged into a monitor, so he could easily bring it to the bed or the couch.
It would have to be a high top chair because the small desk is quite high.
I find the space to be a little cold for me but I do realize that it's just a matter of taste.
I absolutely love this!!!!! Great use of space and looks so modern.
I wonder about the opaque storage containers. I find it's essential to be able to see what's inside.
Awesome ladder design
Awesome
A Man is a programmer and he's working without a chair? Am I correct?
yes. standing desks are very popular nowadays
yeah,weird
its very common, and actually healthier, since you work in a more ergonomic position.
Two big thumbs up to the architect. Beutiful & smart design all throughout the space.
omg the organizational intensity of that space is incredible - that's definitely the dream!!
You should put some safety railings on the bedspace, you might like roll off.
What a wonderful story. Nice couple. They're doing it the right way.
Beautiful! I've never seen such precious big work of art like this. I just love the design. I can't think of a work to come up with to explain this beautiful design.
At first I was thinking that I wouldn't want to watch the projector setup while on the loft, but then I realized how cute it was. It reminds me of going to a drive-in to watch a movie. You could have a super cute date night up there.
Wow! Truly creative. Very modern and well organised
Very modern and organised in every possible way. Truly creative. one of the best ###
as an engineer/architect and someone who loves space saving I really enjoyed watching this absolutely brilliant
Love the mirror idea to make the space look bigger! Great layout and I'm a huge fan of the loft and the workspace underneath.
this is not a tiny loft at all!
really creative and resourceful use, but probably cost a fortune
So much creativity in below loft bed area!
These two are really nice when I met them at our open house! They were looking around the Yerba Buena area for condo lofts with a lot of space so they can get really creative by tearing down walls, changing stairwells, and etc.
Love it but. I'd be so scared of falling off the bed when I sleep :o
build railing around it
Nah, that'd get in the way when you want to watch tv from your bed. I suggest a net that comes out from the walll and encircles the bed area, catching you if you do lose balance or get busy ;) hahahaha
anyway you can see there's quite a space between the bed and the edge of the board. If you roll off the bed, you still fall on the loft board. If you don't wake up after that & still manage to roll over the edge... are you drunk?
I don't think you would because the bed doesn't fill all of the loft area, so you would have to fall off the bed onto the floor of the loft, then continue rolling off the loft haha
Build a rail
Amazing. I mean, I could never live there with another human being cuz I'm HELLA claustrophobic but that is an amazing concept
This is incredibly well-executed. Thank you for sharing!
This is absolutely amazing😆 The fact that the bed isn't on the floor, lots of storage place, big mirrors that make the place wider and the windows, wow😍 and maybe the place under the bed too. I will come back to this video when I need a reason, haha
Really nice place! But I'd be scare to fall off from the bed if I'd sleep on the outer side.. :)
I live in a 98sqft apartment. My bed is up in a loft. I am single so this suits me well. The only problem is, I need to get use to downsizing. I do have a lot of stuff and clothes. So I am still working on that. I have huge vertical space so I am going to explore the possibility of vertical storage.
I've never heard of a 98 square foot apartment. I can't imagine it. The smallest I've ever seen is about 300 square feet. You should do a video of your apartment. That would be very interesting.
I think in very condensely populated areas the apartments can get even smaller. Like for example, apartments in Tokyo can be realllyyyy tiny.
Brilliantly designed and organized--and I say this as someone who is not a fan of lofts or modern/minimalist design. Nicely done.
Amazing on what you can have with such little space. Great job.
Is the bed really huge or she's a petite lady?
considering he stoops to kiss her (towards the end) and that he doesn't look tall in the first place, then yes, she's tiny!
Also it is a King size bed I think, pretty huge bed
This isn't really practical, just because you have to put in effort and patience to do the things you need on an everyday basis
Like what?
+T0BBi94 dining table along with the chairs needs to be pulled and put back from their walls space, a little tight corner for the computer where you have to stand while using it, pulling out the projector and screen for tv, boxes that needs to be tucked away and organized to make it look neat. And idk, maybe a few other things too
flintlights Some people "need" less than others.
flintlights As Gordon said some people doesnt NEED a dining table to eat, you could just sit elsewhere. Using the computer standing up is prefered by many and some studies have shown it keeps you alert and makes you live longer (no joke). Pulling down a projector screen is done in a second. And if someone doesnt have boxes that are tucked away in their house Then they dont own any stuff.
Because everything is organised and you can get to what you need faster due to shorter "walking" distance this apartment is more practical than most houses.
+flintlights dining table takes two minutes to pull out, he wanted his computer that way, not everybody watches tv every day, as for organization.... Any type of organization takes time and typically it's worth the effort.
Wow, I just love your space!! The designs are so smart and clever!! Thank you for sharing!!
this is so wonderful !!! im looking for home designers like this who can make personalised works
I wonder how much the renovations cost...
Wow this is amazing these people are lucky
I love the use of all the space. I love that it still had a full kitchen too. No space was wasted. But I agree, the older you get, it would be time to change the plans for the ladder and the bed up top hehe
Genius!!! One of the best I have seen.
So Cool! When I move out of my parents I'm Moving into a tiny house on wheels :)
A trailer
Actually a tiny house is not considered a trailer :)
actually, anything you can pull with a truck is called a trailer, because it trails behind you, hence the name.
Wow!!!! So cool!!!
Great space and great kids! May you have a happy, long marriage! You are both adorable!
The way the small space is used so well is amazing.
She said they will stay there until the kid is walking... She has no idea how much STUFF a little baby has and how much space a little baby takes!
Actually, not true. Society (and Walmart) WANTS us to think babies need a ton of junk. They don't. At all. Babies are a multi-billion dollar business due to all the junk. Babies need very little. Unfortunately, mass marketing has convinced 99% of parents otherwise.
Very true. Babies only really NEED the essentials. Nappies, food, clothes, bed, and of course a few things to play with and learn from. That really takes up minimal space. These days people buy too much in to all the extra unnecessary stuff (I did too) and that's why it's easy to believe that babies need it, when infact they don't. The same goes for adults really...that's why I enjoy seeing the incredible ways people utilise a small space for living. :)
so true I'm typing this with my baby in my hands
It has no warmth to it. Glass, concrete, and all the furniture looks like it hurts.
This is absolutely awesome....every bit of it! Love it.
Wow! Absolutely awesome! Well done.
only comment I would make is that it looks a little dangerous that bed canopy with no barriers -hate to get up middle of night sleepwalking = broken legs.
I live in 2,000 square feet and I am jealous of this!!!
The space is really well designed. I love it.
So many great ideas. True multi use space.
What if you fall of the bed
they could ve install collapsible railings there in order to be able to hv space when replacing d bedsheet..
Classified Info How often have you fallen out of your bed? If the number is greater than zero, then this loft is not for you.
Thing is not falling off d bed..more like accidentally overstepping d platform..
it would automatically activate a call to the nearest hospital.
Sweet crib!!! I like it. 👍👍
Love that closet. Sooo much space.
That's one of the best spaces I've ever seen! Amazing design
SAFETY FIRST WHERE ARE THE - BARS
Ikr
over protective omg
just put a bean bag under the bed
mega gamers I agree with you.... at least put some sort of short wooden fence along the edge of the bed
I sleep on a bunk bed with no bars and I've never fallen off
THEY ARE LIVING MY DREAM
Finally a tiny (or small) house video where both people in the couple talk.
Amazing for a single person or couple. Being from a long distance relationship, I can see where the need for one's personal space comes into value.
Loving the loft... I could do wonders with the space.
I need that loft in my life
I don't know what I wanna be yet but architecture has always interested me. Especially indoors, like decorating. So this is absolutely gorgeous for me.
Wow that looks so awesome!!
