    This comes down to the tunnel between NY and NJ that is about 100 years old and is suffering from salt water damage from Hurricane Ida in 2021. While Amtrak and NJ Transit did their best to repair the tunnel the salt in it is slowly but surely destroying the infrastructure. In addition, the decision to cancel the ARC project by Chris Christie destroyed any chance of stopping this from happening. It was an estimated budget for the project was $8.7 billion. Construction began in mid-2009 and the project was slated for completion in 2018, but it was cancelled in October 2010 by Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, who cited the possibility of cost overruns and the state's lack of funds. Now they are working again but the solution won't be in place until 2028 earliest.

    • @DavidNightjet
      @DavidNightjet Před 2 měsíci

      @@joaquinjr2570exactly this. When the Pennsylvania Railroad built the station and tunnels in the 1900s they didn't want diesel fumes to seep into the station. They also didn't have the tech back then to equip the tunnels with ventilation shafts since they went under the river (look over in Hoboken for tunnels of similar age with ventilation shafts; they lead into Hoboken station and have open cuts twice along the length of the tunnels to allow fumes to vent out, rather than using air pumps. Not exactly possible under the Hudson). These two factors are why running diesels into Penn isn't possible. Any diesels you see in Penn are dual mode locomotives running off of electric power.

      Sure and when the power goes out in your house, you should keep the gas generator in your garage so you don't get wet filling it back it up....oh wait there's a reason why they say not to do that....I think it involved a noxious oderless gass called Carbon Monoxide. You know...that stuff that kills people. Yeahhhhh there a reason why they can run diesel trains into Penn Station. That's like firing off 100 gas generators in a giant garage.

    • @travisbeagle5691
      @travisbeagle5691 Před 2 měsíci +6

      It isn't though. Electric trains are far more reliable, the issue with them is that when things go south, they can really go south. That's often why newer rolling stock often has small battery packs to address issues like sectional power loss. Even with that, the biggest issues here is that the corridor lacks proper redundancies especially between New York and Newark Penn Stations and much of what is there predates Amtrak.
