    Your William Dozier "voiceover" has perfect cadence and you even timed the music exactly the way they did it... I always felt those voiceovers were key to the shows success because they were a throwback to the "Republic Serials" that the show was parodying

      Yeah, there must've been something in the coffee the day they wrote that episode, because they do so much that most episodes don't.. Bruce Wayne vs. the Joker. Alfred vs. the Joker. The Joker running amok in Wayne Manor and nearly discovering the Batcave. It's like the writers thought, "Let's throw the audience for a loop and just go nuts and do stuff we've never done before."

  • @bucksdiaryfan
    @bucksdiaryfan Před 2 měsíci

    Last comment I promise -- about a year ago I was working on something and I had Batman 66 on in the background and I noticed something -- its essentially a radio serial! There is so much exposition you don't need to be watching it to know everything that's going on... Batman's THOROUGH (and completely unnecessary) explanation of the Bat lie detector fluid at 11:01 makes my point beautifully

  • @bucksdiaryfan
    @bucksdiaryfan Před 2 měsíci

    You are exactly right! When I was a kid they syndicated Batman after school and they mixed up the order so you would only know if it was a "Batgirl" episode if her motorcycle zipped past the opening credits -- thus I never picked up on the total change in format and complete dip in quality. In Season 3 they rushed everything, had no cliffhangers, got in and out of jams instanteously, and the sets looked cheap. But Batgirl was outstanding and looked cool, and I thought that at a time when the introduction of a girl into a boy type show would have been met with derision. I think its because she held her own as a crimefighter/fist fighter so boys accepted her contributions to the team.

    • @ToonGal12
      @ToonGal12  Před 2 měsíci

      Same. Batgirl's character is unfairly blamed for "ruining" the show, when the reality is that there was a ton of other behind the scenes problems going on.

My favorite is from Season 2, "That Darn Catwoman / !Scat Darn Catwoman". The climax, when Batman is chasing Catwoman over a rooftop by the harbor, to Neil Hefti's score, is one of my favorite moments of the series ... and it marks the first and only appearance of "The Bat-kerchief" !

    • @ToonGal12
      @ToonGal12  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I guess it just worked out that I happened to not have any Catwoman episodes. But I'd say her best one was her very first appearance where she had Batman in the pit with the live tiger. I kinda' wish that episode aired later, because when she "dies" at the end, it could explain Lee Merriwether and Eartha Kitt's appearances later as new women who were taking up the Catwoman mantle.

    In all honesty I wish the '66 show had gone even crazier with the villains. Like you said, the comics at the time were just as campy as the show, and a bunch of the greatest C-Listers Batman has ever faced came from that era. There were a few funky additions to the show like Bookworm and Colonel Gumm, but for the most part it was a lot of Batman's usual foes over and over. I would've loved an episode with Planet Master, Zodiac Master... Ooh, or a Halloween episode about Mad Monk!

    • @ToonGal12
      @ToonGal12  Před 5 lety

      Those characters would've been neat to see. Thankfully, the Brave and the Bold cartoon seems to be like a spiritual follow up to this series, and even features some of the 66' villains.

    • @kylefrank638
      @kylefrank638 Před 5 lety

      I hadn't know until watching this video that the Mr. Freeze of the '66 show had the new origin of Bruce Wayne being at fault for Fries' condition. I had actually thought about that after watching the Heart of Ice episode of B:TAS, where instead of some random Wayne Tech official being the one to destroy Fries' work, what if Bruce himself had indirectly given the go-ahead to shut him down? That's pretty interesting that they went that route for an otherwise campy show, and I commend the writers for it. Also, you were right about the show's False Face; he's a hybrid character, using both the supervillain name of False Face, but the secret identity of Clayface, Basil Karlo!

    • @ToonGal12
      @ToonGal12  Před 5 lety

      @@kylefrank638 Yeah, while Bruce Timm and the gang make Freeze's origin a bit more sympathetic and compelling with the "dead wife" angle, that speech he gives about "to never again walk on a summer's day with a hot wind in your face" is almost verbatim his speech in this episode ("never again to feel the warmth of a summer breeze"). And this show is largely responsible for making Alfred Pennyworth popular. In the comics around this time, Alfred had been killed off. But his popularity in the show made the comic writers bring him back.

    People don’t realize that this show is basically what solidified Batman as a pop culture icon. His title was on the verge of cancellation, and this show made Batman, Robin, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon all household names. If you like Batman at all, you owe it to this show AT LEAST for keeping him alive for another generation
    And in a day where everybody is concerned with comics accuracy, this show is the MOST comics accurate we’ve ever seen. When people talk about Golden Age Batman, for some reason they think dark, The Shadow, etc., but when Robin came into the comics it got pretty silly pretty fast and you saw a lot of what would now be considered Spider-Man-esque quippy one liners and Batman breaking the fourth wall to tell kids crime doesn’t pay and don’t waste your money on slots. It’s only the first year of Batman comics that it was predominantly dark and atmospheric. After that, it was an even mix of darkness and childlike fun/fantasy. The Golden Age lineage is actually there, even down to Bill Finger getting to write a Clock King episode, making the first time he got credit for anything Batman related and the ONLY time he ever got to see his name on a Batman project in his actual lifetime when it mattered
    So no matter what kind of Batman fan you are, you’ve gotta admit this show is vital to the character’s legacy

    • @ToonGal12
      @ToonGal12  Před 3 lety

      Exactly! And that's kind of become the norm for many comics. Give it a TV/Movie adaption, and more people are inclined to find the books.

      Yeah. It's only mentioned in the pilot episode. But there's plenty of moments where Batman gets super passionate about his crime fighting duties and the oaths he's taken to protecting people. So if you read into it more, I think it's a subtle reminder of the pain he went through as a kid, and you don't need to show the murder to get the message.

    Well, first of all, I have to register my astonishment, because I am also from/live in Pittsburgh. And also for the random Nostalgia Critic reference, because he was another one of my obsessions. 😮
    Anyway, I agree that the writers loved the Joker, because they definitely game him some of the best storylines. Pop Goes the Joker/Flop Goes the Joker is probably my second favorite episode after The Joker Goes to School/He Meets His Match, the Grisly Ghoul. Like you mentioned, I enjoy seeing Bruce and Dick going undercover and interacting with the villains as themselves.
    Instant Freeze/Rats Like Cheese might be my third favorite episode. George Sanders also is my favorite Mr. Freeze, but I love all of the Mr. Freeze episodes. Green Ice/Deep Freeze also deserves a special mention, for the simple fact that we get to see Bruce and Dick have a confrontation with Mr. Freeze.
    The Bookworm Turns/While Gotham City Burns would probably also be in my top ten somewhere, along with A Riddle a Day Keeps the Riddler Away/When the Rat's Away, the Mice Will Play and An Egg Grows In Gotham/The Yegg Foes In Gotham (again, the latter owing to the fact that we get to see Bruce and Dick interacting with Egghead). And King Tut's Coup/Batman's Waterloo and The Clock King's Crazy Crimes/The Clock King Gets Crowned would probably round out my top ten.

He's also one of the few that was given an origin story.

      I know; you said that in the video, too, and I agree. I watched a lot of this show in syndicated reruns, so Batgirl seemed to me to be here and there, instead of crammed throughout one full season. I admit that I rarely got all that excited for Batgirl appearances, but I am fully on-board with Eartha Kitt as Catwoman, so Season 3 epidoes still had something special for me to look forward to... plus, I somehow more vividly remember the "pow, etc." sound effects as their own separate cutaway cards, instead of being laid over the action.
      Side note, one of my favourite silly aspects of this show that I only realised when watching as an adult is that Batman and Robin should be neurologically ruined, with all the knockout gas and mind control drugs.

    Excellent Video and Analysis. All lists are subjective. Great episode list. The only change I would make is to replace Season 3 Episode 10 "Surf's Up, Joker Under" with the Catwoman Season 1 Episodes 19 and 20 two-parter "The Purr-Fect Crime"/"Better Luck Next Time".
    Some observations regarding the series.
    1. I think the three Mister Freezes, two Riddlers, and especially the three Catwomen hurt the series.
    2. Eartha Kitt was a good Catwoman, but replacing Julie Newmar was a huge mistake. The show should have made sure Newmar was available for Season 3.
    3. The movie "Batman" between season 1 and season 2 wasn't very good. Lee Meriwether who was Catwoman in the movie came back to guest star as a socialite in a season 2 two-parter Episodes 87 and 88 "King Tut's Coup"/Batman's Waterloo".
    3. Yvonne Craig was miscast as Batgirl. She was too old for the part. I think she was a good guest star actress for various '60s TV series, but wasn't a good fit for the part. Replacing the romantic interest of Batman and Catwoman with Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne was another mistake.
    4. The show should have stayed with the formula that worked in Season 1 and became too campy in Season 2. This not only hurt the series but also hurt "The Green Hornet" series as the shows were two completely different shows. Becoming more campy also adversely affected "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." during the same time frame.
    5. The styles were changing in the 1960s with the long hair, and socially and culturally people were moving away from the traditional looks of the early part of the decade. This especially affected the ratings of "The Green Hornet". Wearing a Fedora and dressed in an overcoat in a warm weather climate seemed out of place. The only reason William Dozier who produced "Batman" used "The Green Hornet" character because other characters like "Superman" and "The Lone Ranger" weren't available due to contractual restrictions. Another issue was Robin didn't grow his hair longer. If "Batman" and "The Green Hornet" had come out earlier in the '60s, I think the shows would have been on longer.
    6. I think Superhero fatigue was setting in too because, as a kid at the time, there were DC and Marvel Superhero Cartoons and Hanna Barbera had their own Superheroes like "Space Ghost" and "The Herculoids".
    Some honorable mentions.
    1. Roddy McDowell who played the bookworm, was the voice actor portraying the Mad Hatter in "Batman The Animated Series".
    2. Adam West would be forever linked to Batman because he would be a voice actor in "Batman The Animated Series" and the animated series "The Batman". It's a shame DC waited too long to bring Adam West and Burt Ward in the animated movies "The Return of the Caped Crusaders" and "Batman Vs. Two-Face" with Willaim Shatner as the voice of Two-Face. They could have done an animated series if they had brought back them sooner.
    3. Many of the "Batman" guest stars appeared in many of the various TV shows. The 4 main shows they guest starred in were "Batman", "Star Trek TOS", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", and "The Wild Wild West."

      @@ToonGal12 You're Welcome. Three last Bat Facts you might be aware of.
      1. Willaim Dozier created 'Batgirl" for the TV series. After Batgirl debuted in the series, DC added her to the Bat Family.
      2. Dozier was also instrumental or at least partially for bringing Catwoman back into DC Comics. The 1950s weren’t a great time for comics. Fredric Wertham’s book "Seduction of the Innocent" was released, accusing the comic book industry of fostering juvenile delinquency and other outrages.
      The book caused a panic, then a Senate hearing, and ultimately led to the creation of the Comics Code Authority, a draconian set of regulations for what was - and, more likely, wasn’t - allowed to be printed in the pages of a comic book.
      Among the sinful and morally reprehensible things banned? Catwoman. Because she was never punished for her crimes, because she made those crimes look cool, and because she flirted with Batman, she was found in violation of the CCA and shelved until the 1960s.
      Catwoman’s last appearance for over a decade was in Detective Comics #211 in 1954. She was replaced as Batman’s love interest by the newly minted - and most assuredly not a criminal - Batwoman, Kathy Kane. The animated series "Batman Brave and the Bold" paid homage to this character with the Season 2 Episode 20 episode The Criss Cross Conspiracy". The character was renamed as Katrina Moldoff.
      3. Two weeks after The Green Hornet and Kato guest starred in the "Batman" series, their series was canceled.
      Have a great night, Ed G.

      I don't really blame Batgirl herself so much as the dip in the quality of writing and overall production. By then, the sets became more bare bone and not as lavish, and they put SO much emphasis on Batgirl, that it made Batman and Robin look like dopes sometimes. If they would've had a better balance of character development, it wouldn't have been as bad.

      @@elmerfudd6305 Well....everyone's got their opinion and you're entitled to yours. As for what could've happened had Batgirl gotten her own show, it's hard to speculate on a series that never happened. From what I've learned, had the show gotten a fourth season, the studio wanted to drop Robin and have the show focus on Batman and Batgirl as the new duo. But William Dozer said no, siting that the studio was making him cut out too much to fit their ever decreasing budgets. They then tore down the Batcave set, and afterward, the studio came back to him again with a final offer, saying they were willing to go back to the "two part episode" format, AND, they would keep Robin. But then Dozer was like, "Well, we just tore down the Batcave. Are you willing to pay the $800k to rebuild it?" And obviously, the studio wasn't, and that was the end of the show.
      Honestly, I think the "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" cartoon is a great spiritual successor to Batman 66'. Watching that cartoon made me think, "Had Batman 66' gone on and had a huge budget, this is how it could've turned out." The Batman 66' comic book series that DC published a few years ago is another great one to check out. The comics, in essence, is the lost fourth season.
