They each had a ring. Sort of a pre-engagement ring. The ring she had was her ring and the Emperor had Ling's ring.

@jenniferstone2875: That may just be a mistake. When Ling went to see Ling Yunche after all she had done he asked for and got the ring back. He then gave it to Hailan to use as future evidence when Ling would finally get what was coming to her. Hailan gave it to the Emperor. How she got it back I don't know. There were not two rings to my knowledge. She didn't deserve his love, his promise or his ring. I can imagine the Emperor making her wear it to remind her of her betrayal of Ling Yunche so many times over but the Emperor would not be so considerate. Afterward, Hailan should have kept it or given it to Ruyi or buried it with Ling Yunche. His asking for it back symbolized for me that he was finally done with her. I would like to see Ling Yunche's final episode and then Ling's judgment episode to see if I missed something. There is always something new to be discovered.

He caused all of Ruyi's suffering and acts. Only a narcissist blames others for their own faults and only thinks about themselves. I didn't feel a bit sorry for the emperor in the end because he caused most of the chaos. He very much mistreated the one woman that actually loved truly

Well he had enough people tell him. The Dowager, The Empress and Hailan were more subtle, Rong would tell him to his face and Ruyi was always straight but she was brutally honest when she cut her hair. Gao, Jia and Ling all let him have it with both barrels on their way out but it went in one ear and out the other. I can't remember which one spoke for the harem when they demanded that Rong be sent away. There was nearly a mutiny because he was making a fool of himself. Even his sons tried to reason with him. Even God can't save a fool from his own folly if he won't change. Their world revolved around him but that doesn't make him the sun.

She was given the poisonous mushrooms that she got caught giving to Ruyis son. They are poisonous over a long period of time and very addictive. That's the soup she's been drinking all these years. Also you can see how cold it is in her room, it's not like she's living lavishly in the palace.

Ruyi explores the psychological and emotional aspect of court life, it’s less romanticized and more realistic compared to other dramas who have clear winners and losers whereas real life is never so straightforward. I think this show captured the real struggle of women between their own desires and their duties that revolve around Confucian relationships, whereas other dramas make the heroine transcend her actual role for the sake of the story, which is very unrealistic historically as well

Historically, the only sons to outlive Qianlong Emperor, apart from Yongyan (15th), were Yongxuan (8th) and Yongxing (11th) from Consort Jia; and Yonglin (17th) was another of mad Imperial Noble Consorts sons, but I don't think is shown in the show, so would be a full biological brother of Yongyan. 6th Prince, Yongrong, who was Noble Consort Chun's youngest son, died in 1790, and Qainlong 'retired' in 1795.
The show explains Jia's sons being barred from the succession, due to Jia's actions, but there doesn't seem to be a record of that actually happening. It was probably because they were both in their mid to late 40's when Qianlong retired, and only had 4 surviving sons between them (ie, not promising for the future, as an emperor needed many sons to outlive him, to avoid a succession crisis).
Even Ruyi's son Yongji, the 12th Prince, died early. The show tries to lead the audience to believe that Qianlong Emperor didn't choose her son to succeed him because, like Ruyi, he wanted him to be free to live his life like a normal person, instead of bearing the crushing weight of expectation that is being the Emperor. But in reality he died in 1776, outliving his mother, Ruyi, by 10 years, and outliving mad Imperial Noble Consort by just over a year.
