    I just started growing mushrooms at home from store bought mushroom stems which I cut into 1/4" pcs. I've got them in jars with one small hole in the top of the jar and black plastic from garbage bags wrapped around them to keep them in the dark. So far (day 6) two of the jars are showing very good mycelium growth. I've been growing veggies for the last 15 yrs and seen our back yard go some compressed soil to lush. Seeing such changes in soil biology is all a part of the fun. Last year near the end of summer we had allot of mushrooms given to us. I took many of them an planted them in a shaded cool spot covered with wood chips. Winter here is very cold but I'm hoping some of the spores survived and will produce. Doing that little experiment led to store bought/jars and last night my mind drifted into the thought that if one can cross pollinate to get new veggies why not mushrooms. (Rabbit holes can be fun!) I did a quick google search and found your video's. Now I am very excited! To be able to cross mushrooms and eventually grow a few new meaty ones no one else has I believe will honestly help with local sales. I understand it's dreaming big especially since I've yet to grow a single mushroom but with such information as you have provided it is far more feasible that such dreams can come true. Thank you very much for the vid's and all of your time and effort! "THE HIGHEST HUMAN ACT IS TO INSPIRE." - Nipsey Hussle

    Hey Gary, I actually have video “request” for you since you own a bunch of equipment. Would it be possible to make a test on how fast different cleaners, mainly ISO/Bleach/H2O2 kill spores under a microscope? I stumbled into a discussion on Reddit wether dipping a swab into 3% H2O2 prior to sampling a mushrooms spores is actually a feasible strategy to significantly decrease contamination rates on agar. Thanks

      @@FreshfromtheFarmFungi Did you end up making this video? I'd love to see something like this too! If you haven't made it yet (and are still intending to), could you also add Hypochlorous Acid to that experiment? That's what I've been using as my cleaning solution for everything, and it's been working so far. Wondering how mycelium would react to it, though I'm assuming the Hypochlorous would kill it.

    I've been trying to germinate for spore many time but never succeed. Wonder what am doing wrong. Always try to do it, the way you do it.

      maybe genetics, maybe contamination, maybe not the right temp, maybe not the right media - it could be many factors

    So if you have multiple spores together on a Petri dish is there dna recombination? And once you isolate a single spore in the dish what do you do with it?

    • @FreshfromtheFarmFungi
      @FreshfromtheFarmFungi  Před rokem +3

      yes if they are compatible pairings they will germinate, form hyphae, fuse hyphae and exchange genetic information to form diploid mycelium which will colonize substrate and form fruits. If you have haploid colonies you can later pair them with compatible haploids or even fuse them with other mycelium in some specific cases (only some species do this “di-mon mating”)

      Wow thank you! This is exactly what I was hoping for. I've been dealing with a difficult one and started to run out of ideas. Took me forever to germinate spores on agar, had to eventually change my recipe many many times. When I did eventually manage to get some colonized grains, they refused to fruit.
      So this is my last shot, if it fails i will need to go looking for them again. Doubt id ever find them again. @@FreshfromtheFarmFungi
