- In this video, I explain how to convert a drive from FAT32 to NTFS without Data Loss.. Of course, if the drive is inside the main computer, or an external hard drive or a USB memory..
NTFS is the default file format for Windows. Nowadays, if you try to format a drive in Windows 10 or if you have just installed the operating system on a brand-new hard drive, it is in the NTFS format. Compared to older file formats like FAT32, NTFS is pretty feature-rich and supports large hard drives, bigger files, lets you set file permissions, and has better data security. That is one reason why Windows often recommends and defaults to formatting a drive in NTFS format.
If the FAT32 drive is limiting you from adding large files or setting permissions, you can convert FAT32 to NTFS in Windows without data loss.
Type the below command and press Enter to execute it. Replace “DriveLetter” with the actual drive letter of the drive. For example, the drive I want to convert has the drive letter “G.” So, I replaced “DriveLetter” with “G.”

Thanks your video really helped me out. Had a few huge video files that i ripped from my Blu ray collection was copying to my ssd and forgot ssd was in fat32 (4gb max only). Your tutorial allowed me to convert on the fly from fat32 to ntfs..

i have a problem its says This drive is dirty and cannot be converted. You will need to
clear the dirty bit on this drive by running CHKDSK /F or allowing
AUTOCHK to run on it the next time you reboot.
The conversion failed.
E: was not converted to NTFS
This worked perfectly. Thank you! I still recommend copying the data on another drive before running this command just in case something goes wrong in the middle of the conversion process (power outage, blue screen, disk crash etc).

If your drive cannot be converted. I think the solution is to transfer the data to a safe place. And then format the drive, and the next step is to partition the drive in a correct way, and then transfer your data again. This is the best solution from my point of view. (NOTE THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA FROM YOUR DRIVE) PC>manage>Disk management>right click your drive >select NTFS>FORMAT
