      If you've been to Melaque you probably don't *need* to add Barra to the list, they're pretty similar to be fair, but if you're back in that area I'd definitely stop there for some seafood!

    Barra and Melaque were my first experience of Mexico 30 years ago. I retired from the Canadian Airforce at 38, so every other year Im in the tropics for six months. Since then I’ve travelled in Asia ,Central America and South America. I love going to the tropics for six months of the Canadian winter . I get three summers in a row. I speak Spanish now but it all started there in Barra de Navidad.

    I love Barra de Navidad!! My husband and I used to go there every year - I am talking about the late 80's before we had kids. The last time we were there was in 1997, and we took our kids who were 4 and 6 at the time. It was our little paradise! We got to know the restaurant owners and waiters and always stayed at the same place. My husband was Mexican, born in Texas, and he spoke Spanish fluently. I also speak Spanish fluently. My dear husband died in 2009, and I have always wanted to go back there. I am glad it is still a sleepy little town! I am so glad you discovered it! Brings back fond memories for me!

    Is so funny, how your videos just flow with some of my thinking. Like I'll think something and bam there you are with new video that helps me makes sense of some of things I've been considering. I havent made move but I have been doing lots research and thinking about where in Mexico I will want to go. Recently, in one of many long NYC commute I was thinking like do I want to move to yet another large city in Mexico, lol. But I guess theres pros and cons to everything. Is nice to hear your perspective on living somewhere less busy, bet having extra space is nice too!

    • @laura-bronner
      @laura-bronner  Před 3 lety +2

      Having extra space was SO nice, outdoor space in general that was just ours and not a communal space like what you get in the city (although it's possible to have in CDMX, just costs more haha). I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful and that they're answering your questions about living here as you think of them! haha

    I love Melaque/ Barra. I was fortunate enough to spend 3 winters there. A couple of things I struggled with were the dogs barking incessantly and some of the street dogs are very dangerous. We always had to carry a stick when walking. riding bikes is scary if they run at you. I knew people who had a bad dog bites. Sometimes the bottle rockets and random fireworks are crazy too. Definitely not a peaceful place. I hope to return some day for a visit. Also love Punta Perula and Tenacatita.

  • @lisalackey7699

    Ok, showing my age a bit. I went there as a tourist as a twenty something year old in the 80's. I remember coming into town and the first thing that grabbed our attention was an eatery named Alice's Restaurant. We walked right in and there was an American woman working there who told us her name was Alice, but the restaurant was actually owned by a Mexican woman named Alice. I instantly felt comfortable there. The people were so nice and happy to play along with my chicken Spanish & pantomime communication. Sounds like it has still kept its character. Thanks so much for sharing your experience there!

    I've been to Navidad and along the Costa Allegra traveling down from P.V. or driving through, too. The coast is a bit primitive, but I had experiences with birds, horses and observations that were a joy to have. I'm retirement age, but very active and thought the pace was a bit slow in Melaque and Navidad. More privitive towns in Mexico lack conveniences and infrastructure, too. I have visited many remote villages along there as well. One place a colt ran along with the car and had a conversation with it's mom across the fence and immediate did what the mom asked by returning to pasture with her. Another beaches only inhabitants were a herd of horses which was interesting. I saw a blue bird and a red bird that were hard to identify. It's a part of Mex. closer to the earth, but conveniences and services are a bit limited.

    I'm glad to hear your take on Barra de Navidad. After staying in the La Paz area next Jan. for a month or so ,we are heading to La Costa Alegre for a couple of months and plan on staying in Barra for a couple of weeks or more. I was lucky enough to be there during the 60's & 70's at Christmas time when the towns are decorated to the max and smiles were on all faces. An old fashiined malt glass full of oysters with limon y salsa picante and fresh fish ceviche, can't wait to get back to that reality, for a few pesos more of course. Thanks for doing a great job.

    Barra and Melaque are actually really busy around March for Saint Patty’s day! Anytime of “las fiestas” is so much fun! Lots of partying day and night and parades etc etc. they even have a fair come around that time. With Covid I’m sure it’s probably dead compared to “the normal days.” Next time go in March! The internet isn't really any better in Melaque. It's OK for video calls, but not great and can cut in and out, especially with bad weather (which we had a whole lot of when we were there). It may be better in winter because it will be dry. There are a few expat groups on Facebook for Melaque and Barra worth asking in. People who live there full time will have a better gauge on how the internet has changed in the last year or so.

    Hi, I watch your videos from time to time and have been for at least a couple of years. Firstly, thank you for the videos 🙏🏼 I know a lot of work goes into putting these videos together. The one ask/critique I have is please make an effort to pronounce Mexican/Spanish names properly. You’re living in the country and benefiting from the culture, people, food, environment and cost of living.
    While I know the “rr” (like Bah-rrah) is hard to pronounce for English speakers, all other sounds should not be a problem. Jalisco is “jah-lees-koh.” Not jah-lih-scoh.”
    .
    The “i” in Spanish is pronounced “eeh.” 🙂
