Wow. First, I want to say that I love the Blue Mountain Theatre company's plays. However I'm kinda surprised and disappointed at the script writing here. I understand the concept of poking fun at stereotypes in the name of humor. But the person who wrote this seems to be very ignorant of not only Jamaican Jews, but of Judaism and Jewish culture in general. It's obviously based on an outsider's view, and with no sort of understanding of the Jewish community. The biggest issue I had is that they guy's name/nickname is Shylock. Really? That's not a name...but rather a slur. My goodness. Then he goes on to talk about how you have to be born a Jew. Absolutely not. In fact, Jamaica's Jewish community is the home to many converts. It is one of the few Jewish communities in the entire world that is not cloistered off and turns converts (and gentiles interested in Judaism) away. Then he goes on to show a tattoo from a concentration camp. While some Jamaican Jews were refugees from Nazi Germany, the majority have roots in the island from long before WWII. In fact Jamaica had a much larger Jewish community in the 19th century than in the 20th. And finally I don't know of any Jamaican Jews with the attitude that they feel that Black Jamaicans are beneath them or can't do anything for them. I know this is humor...but just thought I would put this out there, lest people get the notion that there is any truth whatsoever to what's being implied here.

It's partially based on Merchant of Venice and the main Jewish character in that play was named Shylock

It’s good to defend when you hear somone belittle an entire race. I appreciate hearing someone see racism of any kind and defend them. World culture has become more woke but somehow it’s still ok to belittle Jews. That has to change.
