the opening to this song is so chilling with the 808 drums and faint humming. it sounds almost foreboding. really puts you in Kanye’s mindset for the album
This beat is the process of kanye going through the breakup in which the heartbreak is literally killing him. The beeps of a heart monitor hitting a high, then low note; drums of a beating heart to the sound of bongo-like heartbeats. the high-hat drum symbol represents the quick shallow breaths of a patient on a respirator. The sounds of an angelic choir throughout the song alludes to his battle with an imminent death. the beat stops and gives way to the choir/angels at 4:32 to show he may have lost his will to live, but he regains control at 4:54 showing his persistance to stay alive and do what he loves... This album literally changed everything. You had to be there to understand. I understand there was beats in the past before 2008 that used 808s. However, this album took that 808 to another level. Especially during a time when it was all about trap rap and southern catchy hooks. This album busted open a door for the many producers that came out after 2008 using an 808 drum.
