  • An excerpt from a film (1986) by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle of Mozart's first opera seria "Mitridate, re di Ponto", composed when Mozart was just in 14 years old. The role of Mitridate was played by Swedish tenor Gösta Winbergh. The Concentus Musicus Wien was conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Available in DVD (DGG 2006).

    It's wonderful how he enters most of the upward leaps in mixed voice rather than the typical ringing chest voice of modern tenors. This is an art today lost.

    This is wonderful performance. Powerful voice but also self-control; virtuosity but no overacting. Everything so natural (even those extravagant costumes), so generous. Great Winbergh but I feel Harnoncourt somewhere behind too.

    Interesante rendición de esta difícil aria, sin embargo Wimberg carece del squillo y el color del precioso metal del instrumento insuperable en esta pieza que posee Bruce Ford.

    In my opinion, not one of the best... BUT THE BEST!
    Fords version is also good, but not the best. It doesn't have this sense of emotion.
    But this is simply PERFECT! It can't be done better!
    VIVO GÖSTA WINDBERGH!

      L'Orfeo di Selandia I find Ford to be faaar more emotional. This felt so cold to me. Emotion is subjective though.

      I have listened carefully to both recordings today, several times. My view is that Bruce Ford sings beautifully, but Gosta Winbergh has a depth and power that, for me, puts his version first. But let's be honest, who wouldn't be happy to listen to either? And who could but give their best singing in an iconic building by Palladio?

    Mr. Windbergh shows an almost freakish talent here. And the music is bristeling with baroque, no sign of Viennese School yet. Very early Mozart indeed. Fascinating.

      Ovviamente, Mozart è Mozart, Verdi è Verdi, e Carotone è Carotone: è giustamente perché possedo una "apertura mentale" e conosco la musica meglio dell'italiano, e conosco anche la historia de la musica che disdegna "grandi del passato indiscutibili" come Telemann, che posso parlare senza pregiudizi dei pregiudizi "indiscutibili" di quelli che, sarcasticamente, esortano altri a tenere il loro sarcasmo per se stessi.

    @Thrax1982 I agree with you very much;I also sense that something "extra" was happening in Winbergh "heartfelt" interpretation...probably the inexorable shadow of a "to soon death"?; I guess we will never know, but for sure he is transmiting a great emotion in this aria. I also like very much Bruce Ford version!!!

    "Shame" is an expression short for "what a shame". Not at all intending that Winbergh should have been ashamed of anything. Quite the contrary, he was a superbly refined singer, as I said before, from Mozart to Wagner passing thru Stauss. But obviously, in as difficult an aria as this one, the vocal demands of JUST a semitone higher, are infinitely superior and it's hard to compare with those who have sung it at modern pitch, like Sabbatini.

      Same, and the way Ford floats through the crescendos is brilliant. I'm almost there with my high notes, this Aria in Ford's key signature is my ultimate goal. Much respect to this tenor, this is a brutal Aria with voice tension.

    The best vocal rendition of this aria (and not yet appearing on CZcams) is Giuseppe Sabbatini's recording for Decca (With Roussel, Dessay, Bartoli ecc). In the right key, with great empathy, vocal focus, shading between mf and pp to ppp. Also exquisite and refined variations in the the da capo. Listen to it.

      No, Sabatini is not at all better. Rather there is an older recording with Werner Hollweg who is superb.

    Where are the appogiatures (se di LAuri) ? What kind of tempo is it ? This gentleman should sing more coperto if he wants to keep his voice. Not awfull, but almost.

    Al passaggio di registro la voce si sbianca, nonostante il tempo lento che gli viene lasciato. La noia impera, tra falsettini e voce spalancata aperta nel finale, cattiva tecnica, senza alcun palpito. Qui poi occorrerebbe una tecnica superlativa per unire gli sbalzi di altezza e le note basse non suonano per niente. Spyres e Blake sono altro pianeta.

    I absolutely Winbergh in almost anything he sang. From Mozart to Strauss to Wagner (excellent Walther and Lohengrin ) but he sings this aria a semitone down!! Shame

      Forget semitones and half notes and all that pretension. Just enjoy great singing. Every performance is unique. We don't want carbon copy opera. God knows it's hard to find decent singers these days. Just enjoy
