Jalen Brunson Shouldn't Be Able To Do This

  • Jalen Brunson produced so much offense against the 76ers that it doesn't even make sense, and his approach as a creator is unlike any other player.

I normally don't like PGs who have such a high usage and look for their own shot as much as Brunson, but his ability to play within the flow of the game, high basketball IQ and his ability to keep his teammates involved despite his high volume of shots make him my favorite Knick since Ewing

@@avery1018 I don't disagree... but usually PGs who play that way (whether by circumstance or by preference) end up becoming horribly inefficient and make tons of mistakes b/c of it. Brunson manages to avoid that (for the most part) b/c of the traits I mentioned... I actually think he's a much better passer than people give him credit for. I'd love to see his assist numbers if they add a couple more big scoring threats.

@@avery1018 one of the things that really impresses me about Brunson is his versatility offensively. Apart from his physical limitations (i.e. his size and/or not having a Nate Robinson vertical) he really has no weaknesses and he's gotten so good at keeping the defense guessing and not leaning on any one skill to the point where defenses constantly end up in a "pick your poison" situation.
His ability to get shots in the paint is uncanny for a guard his size. I honestly watch him and am stunned every time at the creativity, variety and textbook execution of his offensive skillset.

For antone like me who is actually trying to play like Brunson on the court, don’t forget this man does miss plenty of shots. He missed 17 per game in the playoffs. But, the reason I’ve felt since Dallas that this man could put up 30 if he got the chance, he is simply able to get good looks off that he is comfortable and confident taking over, and over, and over, and over. Brunson isn’t afraid to miss a 9 foot jump shot. Idk, I feel like some players might be. But Brunson just shoots and shoots and shoots. Never gets too down. And it’s brilliant. They seem like tough shots, but they also seem like easy shots. But all that matters is that they are easy and comfortable and second nature shots for him.
I remember I was really impressed his rookie season when he showed that he could make these paint and short mid range shots over almost any contest and get to them whenever he wanted.
We all hear so much about the mentality of Kobe. One thing I don’t hear taken from him enough is how much time he spent on the mid range shot specifically. He shot thousands and thousands of the same shots from the same area in pradrice to the point that during games, it felt really comfortable for him to take them with any levle of contest in his face and he was even able to do things like alter his shooting pocket or release angle casually becasue he was sooooo practiced with those shots. And I’ve heard him talk about this. That’s the goal we should all aim for. To get to the point that we have a move or moves or a shot or shots that we are subconsciously sooo comfortable with. We can just go to it whenever we want! And even tho you might miss it any one attenpt, You know you are going to make a bunch of of them if you just keep shooting them. And once you have that comfort level in a move or shot package, that allows you to also feel comfortable to branch out mid game and try new things, because you know you can always go back to your comfort zone if need be!

I love his game, you’re right about the fact that he makes very few mistakes especially in crunch time. He has completely mastered how to exploit his defenders and hunt for driving angles and space to get a shot or floater off. He’s elite at finishing through contact, and although he is “small” by conventional standards, he plays bigger than he is due to have a strong lower body and low center of gravity, he keeps his dribble low, and he changes direction so quickly. He reminds me a little bit of Steve Nash mixed with Stevie Franchise and a dash of Iverson

He is an absolute master at changing directions the split second a defender turns their head, if you look behind you to see where the screen is coming from or where your help is you are dead. Also, the most dangerous time to defend him is after he slows down or looks like he’s doing something casual, he baits defenders into thinking they can relax for half a second and then blows by them. He is playing chess while most defenders are playing checkers, he may not be super athletic but he is one of the most cerebral scorers of this generation, you have to be mentally locked in to slow him down.

One thing I disagree with in this video is that you say Brunson is more of a floor raiser than a ceiling raiser and isn't one to have hyper-efficient games. While he's not quite as good as Steph and Jokic who you mentioned, he is still capable of being a highly efficient scorer in different situations. Without Randle our team is basically the 2001 Sixers -- Brunson is Iverson and no one else on the team is really all that good at creating their own shot. He has to carry the offense and has taken on a huge load, sacrificing efficiency for volume out of necessity. When playing with a co-star like Randle (or ideally someone better) he's shown his ability to be more efficient at slightly lower volume, and was quite good as a catch and shoot player this year.

What a wonderful example JB is for all the kids out there, and a whole new generation of NBA fans.

For the past 3 season, at least, he's been shooting before 48-50% from the field, and 37-41% from behind the arc. If he was a better free throw shooter, he would be flirting with 50/40/90 seasons every year. He is uber efficient as a high-volume/high-usage scorer, with or without Randle. Julius, as a secondary scorer, does make it harder for opposing teams to focus/triple team Brunson.

These Knicks are playing like how a Knicks team should. Yes Brusnson is the top guy but that doesn't stop the whole starting line up from having double digits in scoring. Let's not forget how great their rebounding is considering there not a really big team at all but they fight for every possession. I feel nostalgic watching them play like I've seen this before, this is the 90s Knicks all over again. Unlike the 90s we need to see these Knicks get rings and a parade. I've lived in NY my whole life and I cannot wait to one day move far away from this dumpster fire. The only thing I will take wifh me is my love for the NY Knicks.

Julius Randle is fine as a costar but how you breakdown JB game. It screams for mikal bridges as a two way costar but I think the Villanova guys and Robinson is too small for thibs liking. Idk who’d be a good safety value type player for the Knicks as a second option

Before Randle got hurt Brunson's efficiency was insane this year, because they had two guys who often needed to be doubled. Randle was probably more efficient than he's ever been this year before his shoulder injury as. It's a real shame they had so many injuries because that January where they had Brunson, Randle, and OG after the trade with the Raptors they were like a top 3 offensive and defensive team in the league and were blowing out the Sixers (in Philly) and the Nuggets.

“Rarely will you ever see unique peak efficiency games with Brunson”. What games are you watching bro?? He is constantly scoring 30+ off of great shooting percentages??? You can be efficient while also taking a lot of shots, both can be true

The drop coverage made him average 40. If Joel helps to contest and missed, it's automatic offensive board. It's a perfect pair to have a good offensive rebound team.
This is what Trae Young did to them in 2021. Clint is only focused in getting offensive board if Joel helped contesting him.

I know everyone is sick to their stomach knowing the Knicks finally got a generational player, let alone got him for the ultimate discount. Every team in the association has gotten atleast one or 2 generational players twice in the past decade, Brunson is the only generational Knick since Carmelo and even he wasn’t generational. The Knicks deserve to eat and have a seat at the table dammit.
