I so much appreciate John Spong's ability to put ancient texts into the context of their culture and time frame , and show how they have been misused and misinterpreted into the ridiculous beliefs that have been evolved by the church. He stimulates the brain to THINK about all the magic invented and bring it down to earth and a clearer sense of the real world we all live in.

@@telvinteiko2217 he is trying to make things logical for the unbelievers, as he is an unbeliever himself. As he walks by sight not by faith and is wise is his own understanding . That if he were to witness the power of Jesus name he would stop this symbolism logic he has. He needs a real encounter with Jesus.

This is exactly where I am in my spiritual journey. I was born and baptized as a catholic. Sometimes I still have to hold myself back from making the sing of the cross. And I'm a black man.

Jesus was born a virgin & lived a PERFECT, SINLESS LIFE. He died for your sins and he loves you. He is worshiping God and confessing Christ as Lord now, but certainly not on the terms he’d want.
Rather than praising with joy, he is on his face and knees begging and screaming for mercy.

L'épisode des noces de Cana (comme beaucoup d'autres trucs chez Jean) n'est pas que le récit historique d'un événement plate, mais plein de signification. Marie est présentée comme "mère de l'époux", car il s'agit des noces de l'Agneau, ici Spong a raison. L'hymnographie parle de ces choses abondamment. Toutefois, Spong semble ne pas savoir que les rédacteurs de l'évangile selon Jean avaient sous les yeux les synoptiques, et ont voulu y ajouter non seulement un enseignement théologique, mais aussi des précisions historiques. Ce que Spong dit de Marc, c'est une répétition de l'adoptianisme, qui a déjà été démonté par les Pères de l'Église. Beaucoup de choses sur la parenté de Jésus nous viennent d'Hégésippe. Spong omet la "parthenos" de la LXX (ἰδοὺ ἡ παρθένος ἐν γαστρὶ ἕξει καὶ τέξεται υἱόν), alors que c'est chose archiconnue, même par un séminariste de première année: "ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχω", littéralement "en ventre avoir", est très courant dans la LXX, et ça signifie toujours "concevoir". Spong l'ignore. Également, la généalogie de Luc dit que Jésus était "d'Éli" (=Éliachim=Joachim), sans mentionner Marie (à cause des préjugés mêmes dont parle Spong), mais en mettant Marie comme personne à part entière, pas juste incubatrice. Si Jean omet tout ce qui se rapporte à la naissance humaine de Jésus, c'est précisément parce qu'il y répond par l'engendrement divin de Jésus (le prologue), et non pas par ignorance ou stupidité. Bref, Spong connaît extrêmement mal l'évangile selon Jean; ce n'est pas pour rien que l'homme est devenu ce qu'il est devenu. Le passage chez Ézéchiël me semble est une vraie prophétie sur Marie, et les PCP anglicans de 1552-1662 font lire ce passage à l'Annonciation, même si cette prophétie n'est pas utilisée par les rédacteurs du NT (qui utilisent cependant Iésaïe 7:14). Mais si l'on considère (comme Spong) que tout ce qu'il y a dans le NT est fabriqué rétrospectivement en lisant les prophètes, on finit par conclure que le personnage même de Jésus fût une fiction, basée sur Josué et une multitude d'autres personnages de l'AT. Spong a raison de dire que Marie est un symbole du peuple de Dieu, sauf qu'il s'agit du peuple dans la continuité AT-NT, comme la femme de l'Apocalypse; les premiers chrétiens ont vu l'Église comme étant le vrai Israël. L'image de Spong où le judaïsme talmudique serait la mère du christianisme est très récente (20ème siècle): il fait un anachronisme terrible. J'ai beaucoup aimé une excellente thèse de doctorat écrite par un témoin de Jéhovah sur l'identité de la reine Esther; je crois que je peux également apprendre deux ou trois choses de Spong. Toutefois, il prétend avoir découvert l'eau froide, alors qu'il est totalement ignorant de la patrologie et de l'hymnologie chrétienne traditionnelle.

That is exactly what I don't understand...if the bible contains only fables and man-made stories with very little (if any) truth - and he knows this - why would he continue to believe the biggest lie in it? The ability of the human mind to deceive itself never fails to astound me.

Maxime Boucher I don't blame Spong. I don't believe in Jesus because I don't know which Jesus. I don't trust the gospels. I have never met Jesus to shake his hand and ask him questions. Most of the gospels are proven fiction upon honest research. I doubt this God exists. Why doesn't Jesus appear today?

The bible makes it clear that God is holy. This holy God holds a perfect moral standard. Sadly, we have all fallen way short of that standard(Romans 3:23). The penalty for sin/imperfection is Hell(Revelation 21:8).
Thankfully the bible also says that God is rich in mercy and grace. That is why He sent His perfect son to die on a cross to save us from our sin. You and I broke God's law but Jesus paid our fine. Then Jesus rose from the dead, 3 day later, thus defeating death.
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. But whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them." John 3:36
