The more and more I watch Brainiac the more and more I see Mythbusters with the science replaced by bikini babes. The charm of Mythbusters is the science. The explosions and Kari are just icing on the cake.
the facts that they say during the show are all accurate, the explosions and stuff may be helped along to make the show more interesting. thats the whole point of teaching, making the learning interesting
no, its just the huge capacitors and the large coil of magnet wire in the microwave blowing, the oil inside of them ignites and sends the wads of burning oil soaked paper out.
For those who wonder why it didn't blow up when they tried it at home, it is because Microwaves have a safety mechanism which turns off the magnetron on overheating. I believe they have disabled this mechanism in the microwave used in this video so that the magnetron keeps going until it explodes.
You can put metal in microwave. For example spoon in glass full of water. Spoon is going to act as antenna and no sparking. This you can try at home. I have do it all time.
@KILLERxKNIGHT1 well it didnt explode quite like in the brainiac vid but there was some combustion, maybe its a different alloy or another variable that i didnt have control over...
it is possible. metal in a mircowave creates a spark. and actually it didn't explode. it caught fire, but because it was stacked in a small space, the fire seemed like an explosion
I just read that rounded metal doesn't cause a big issue in microwaves... Plus, the microwave wouldn't just explode, they there would be sparks and stuff before anything happened.
Metal can be pretty easily ignited. Eg. Potassium, Caesium, Lithium, Rubidium, Steel, Iron Oxide etc. All of those metals and many others, especially the Alkali metals all very easily ignite.
Magnetron is that thing on the side in microwave. :-) That is microwave source ... more informations on wikipedia for example. It's very simple vacum tube. In microwaves it can generate few hundreds of watts continuously. In radar applications it can be more than 100kW pulsed.
microwave energy causes water molecules in foods to move around more, hence turning them hotter, which is why metals cannot be put in a microwave - they do not have any water molecules to move so the heat is transfered back to the magnets which causes hydrogen buildup which.... BANG
This is true. I've personally microwaved CDs, DVDs, spoons, knives, paper clips, grapes, crystals, aluminium foil, and even a lightbulb (it lights up!). None of these cause a microwave to explode. I've done all of these on high for more than a minute, all in the same microwave. The only side effect I've seen so far is a pissed off mother. That doesn't mean I'm encouraging you to try any of this. Fuck, who am I kidding? HEY KIDS PUT ALL SORTS OF SHINY STUFF IN YOUR MOCROWAVE IT DOES COOL SHIT
@adashofSiren-- Well they do it twice a week but they really do the expirements in one day =3... ya i noticed that to ~ the door opens after first explosion then weirdly another explosio rips the door all the way off
@test666bgfrd considering braniac is a British show i doubt they could've even found a dollar store, what more is that I have tried this myself recently with a 900 MW microwave and and both types of newtons cradle (plastic and metal) the results i got were almost identical to Is it a good idea to microwave this Apart from the Pure metal one having next to no damage to it
yes because that would make a difference if you watch is it a good idea they put alot of objects that would be more likely to cause this then 6 metal balls attached to 2 metal poles the amount of metal has nothing to do with it
Well to be honest with you... I once forgot a fork on one microwave while i was preparing my food (Doh...!) It only moved from one to other side of the plate slightly... but it didnt spark or exploted or anything, surely, i dont know what could've happen if i dont notice the fork in the plate. Need to read more about it, who has some great info about this? Should be helpfull... Thanks.
I've done some similar stuff. I've never seen it explode per se. I've had a few microwaves explode but not like a low explosive, which this one represents. I assume the microwave shown here was chosen for its weakness. Yet I'd have a death wish to deliberately do this in my own kitchen.
@test666bgfrd they never stated that it was pure metal for all we know it could've been silver painted plastic, if you watch "is it a good idea to microwave this" that gives a true insight to what happens when things are microwaved, such as the newtons cradle, a microwave cant explode from the microwaves boucnceing around inside it because microwave ovens are BUILT to resist all microwaves
Note the fucking pyrotechnic stars shooting out of it. If they were going to fake it to make it more "interesting" they could have made it a bit more realistic looking/plausible.
i dont know whether it is fake or not..but perhaps because most of the experiment they set the temperature of the microwave to the max..i watch jripple "is it a good idea to microwave this" too..its cool..but i dont kno whether jripple set the temperature too because they prefer to use time set..either way both braniac and jripple are cool..especially when something blows up..i like it
i love how this show seems to think that EVERYTHING that goes wrong MUST go boom! oh no! i havent paid my bills! theyre going to go BOOM!! magnetrons cannot explode like that. they will simply shut down.
I don't usually post "its fake lololol" type of comments but this is so obvious it hurts, nothing visually exciting actually happened so they blew it up instead.
two dudes below, they aint fake, everyone knows not to put metal in microwaves, just like the youtube vids of cds that crackle in a microwave. its awesome ^_^ x
the guy of Top Gear Richard Hammond
poor newton and your cradle...*sniff*...he loved that cradle
The more and more I watch Brainiac the more and more I see Mythbusters with the science replaced by bikini babes.
The charm of Mythbusters is the science. The explosions and Kari are just icing on the cake.
sorry dudes but braniac experiments work 100% its one of the greatest science shows in the world
it's always a good day when you see random objects explode
This video is the first time I've heard of Brainiac. Back then, I thought its microwave experiments were interesting.
I WANT THIS ON AIR AGAIN!
omg this is so cool im gonna try this at home!
My thoughts exactly.
the facts that they say during the show are all accurate, the explosions and stuff may be helped along to make the show more interesting. thats the whole point of teaching, making the learning interesting
no, its just the huge capacitors and the large coil of magnet wire in the microwave blowing, the oil inside of them ignites and sends the wads of burning oil soaked paper out.
Reminds me of the time I microwaved dinner with the knife and fork still on the plate... hehe
the gut whos narrating is on top gear
It only sparks, i did this with my brother and one of those old aol disks we always got in the mail...
They did this on "Is it a good idea to microwave this?", no explosion.
For those who wonder why it didn't blow up when they tried it at home, it is because Microwaves have a safety mechanism which turns off the magnetron on overheating. I believe they have disabled this mechanism in the microwave used in this video so that the magnetron keeps going until it explodes.
Indeed. It's such an odd item, I didn't think someone would have done it before.
I'm gonna go try this at home
Holy Crap!
I lolled!
Brainiac.. Lied to me..?! Damn you Richard Hammond, DAMN YOU TO HEEEELL!
Great Balls of Fire
i concur
totally, in one of the shots of the back of the microwave you can see the magnotron slamming into the side and pushing the sheet metal out
You can put metal in microwave.
It is in the 4th season and in the 34th ep.
They only say don't try this at home so that people wouldn't find out that they were faking it.
it is possible. metal in a mircowave creates a spark. and actually it didn't explode. it caught fire, but because it was stacked in a small space, the fire seemed like an explosion
there is a wire leading to the yellow barrel and off-screen. i would hazard a guess at an external electricity source.
I just read that rounded metal doesn't cause a big issue in microwaves... Plus, the microwave wouldn't just explode, they there would be sparks and stuff before anything happened.
Wow, i didnt expect the hamster to be the host.
@BoomzNshhh Have you done it? You can put any type of metal in a microwave and it won't make it explode.
Metal can be pretty easily ignited. Eg. Potassium, Caesium, Lithium, Rubidium, Steel, Iron Oxide etc.
All of those metals and many others, especially the Alkali metals all very easily ignite.
that explosion shure looks like pyro.
Well, a stop at spencer's and the salvation army ought to be a fun thing in case I get bored.
@TheNl1nk I hear that now, but it still doesn't make the Magnetron explode. It would just fry it if it did anything.
Magnetron is that thing on the side in microwave. :-) That is microwave source ... more informations on wikipedia for example.
It's very simple vacum tube. In microwaves it can generate few hundreds of watts continuously. In radar applications it can be more than 100kW pulsed.
I have tried that at home!
@CountBleck00 you can place an old microwave outside and stand some feet away
Goodness gracious, great balls o' Bisquik! (That describes homemade biscuits.)
fine im trying this at work
They didn't want you to try this at home because it wasn't real.Jory,Jon,and Riley proved you wrong.
Depends on the power of the microwave.
microwave energy causes water molecules in foods to move around more, hence turning them hotter, which is why metals cannot be put in a microwave - they do not have any water molecules to move so the heat is transfered back to the magnets which causes hydrogen buildup which.... BANG
sweet
Im not really surprised everyone is refering to "Is it a good idea to microwave this?" because its an awsome show and they dont do fake videos.

@adashofSiren-- Well they do it twice a week but they really do the expirements in one day =3... ya i noticed that to ~ the door opens after first explosion then weirdly another explosio rips the door all the way off
yeah i second that
woah long time no see brainiac lol
Newton's Cradles may NOT blw up in a microwave, but it's still a bad idea though, just ask Jory Caron if you get the chance.
Try microwaving broccoli, it has a high iron content and it causes sparks too (that cause the broccoli to burn).
@test666bgfrd considering braniac is a British show i doubt they could've even found a dollar store, what more is that I have tried this myself recently with a 900 MW microwave and and both types of newtons cradle (plastic and metal) the results i got were almost identical to Is it a good idea to microwave this Apart from the Pure metal one having next to no damage to it
i will try this at home :D
i think its "is it a good idea to microwave this"...unless im thinking of something different
Too many to be counted, but no one really does bother counting anyway.
Fake or not, this still kicks ass.
yes because that would make a difference if you watch is it a good idea they put alot of objects that would be more likely to cause this then 6 metal balls attached to 2 metal poles the amount of metal has nothing to do with it
i was wondering where the microwave was plugged in.
jorda yes it is.
dude, it did explode. The door blew out. However I don't think that it really would explode. I think they just staged it to make it look cool.
yeah my uncle did that with a nail and it gave of alot of sparks
i am sooo going to do this at home!!! i have all the resources!!
wow i did not know richard hammond also came out in this show...
real!!!
Well to be honest with you... I once forgot a fork on one microwave while i was preparing my food (Doh...!)
It only moved from one to other side of the plate slightly... but it didnt spark or exploted or anything, surely, i dont know what could've happen if i dont notice the fork in the plate. Need to read more about it, who has some great info about this? Should be helpfull... Thanks.

here is full metal cradle....there was most of it made of plastic, and you could see it bend and melt....
@test666bgfrd they never stated that it was pure metal for all we know it could've been silver painted plastic, if you watch "is it a good idea to microwave this" that gives a true insight to what happens when things are microwaved, such as the newtons cradle, a microwave cant explode from the microwaves boucnceing around inside it because microwave ovens are BUILT to resist all microwaves
no they have a lot more of cool stuff like blowing up caravans or let people run on custard
put explosives in there to scare people??
hell it makes me wanna try it even more
@shakaydi yup
yeah, or part of one, search is it a good idea to microwave this? microwaving a microwave
This is not fake. This is a popular TV show that tries to do what mythbusters does but in a quicker way.
And Francium don't forget Francium
WOW!!!! O_O
yup
lol well you obviously know more than me, so you win =D
just reminded me of that stupid thing Will it blend?
im going to do it now at home cuz he said not too...ima rebel
But what about microwaving a microwave, would love to see that
ya cause those plasma sparks might make your microwave not look very white anymore... dang black spots!
@KILLERxKNIGHT1 they do when you when you rig the microwave with explosives.
:P
Someones getting radiation poisioning
@darkdom6 was that really necessary?
Note the fucking pyrotechnic stars shooting out of it. If they were going to fake it to make it more "interesting" they could have made it a bit more realistic looking/plausible.
MicrowaveMeShow Yeah. This is why people don't trust scientists.
i dont know whether it is fake or not..but perhaps because most of the experiment they set the temperature of the microwave to the max..i watch jripple "is it a good idea to microwave this" too..its cool..but i dont kno whether jripple set the temperature too because they prefer to use time set..either way both braniac and jripple are cool..especially when something blows up..i like it
real or not, what he's saying makes sense.
What happened to this show? I miss it.
funny!
almost looks like there was explosive in that microwave..
@KILLERxKNIGHT1 secretly put some c4 at the back of the microwave :3
LOL.. we do but in water ^^
y did g4 get rid of this
i love how this show seems to think that EVERYTHING that goes wrong MUST go boom! oh no! i havent paid my bills! theyre going to go BOOM!! magnetrons cannot explode like that. they will simply shut down.
I don't usually post "its fake lololol" type of comments but this is so obvious it hurts, nothing visually exciting actually happened so they blew it up instead.
This show is entertainment. Not science. Dont get yourself confused.
two dudes below, they aint fake, everyone knows not to put metal in microwaves, just like the youtube vids of cds that crackle in a microwave.
its awesome ^_^
x
they did microwave a crab and it blew the hell out of the microwave. tried it myself....BANG went mine. and it was no where 2 be find
