      "Giant Asian Hornets (Vespa mandarinia) originate in Asia and are quickly spreading across the globe. There are reports of infestations in Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. Climate change and global shipping are believed to be the culprit behind the spread. "

    • @DanYHKim2
      @DanYHKim2 Před 6 lety +4

      You are quite correct. My comment regarding climate change overstated the case. They are on this continent because they inadvertently arrived in a shipping container, or something.
      That being said, their ability to survive here, and their spread into more northerly parts of Asia, and even Europe, are facilitated by warming temperatures.

Hornets or ants would of been in the forever sleepy time then. It does work, believe me brothers.

    The Japanese have a very ingenious way of finding these nests. They capture one of the drones, tie a piece of string or plastic around it's waist and release it. The string or plastic makes the wasp visible in flight so they simply follow it back to the nest. The other wasps even remove the string.

    This is Vespa mandarinia, the largest species of hornet. If possible I would have let it finish its colony cycle and then dug up the nest at the end of the season. They have impressive light brown combs, one below the other with large cells, and the tops of the combs tend to be convex (i.e., somewhat "cone-shaped"). In addition to Japan, they are found from extreme SE Russia to the northern parts of Viet Nam, Laos and Thailand, and westward to N India and Nepal. They are also found in Taiwan, Korea and much of mainland China. I've collected the adult hornets in the field in Taiwan but didn't find a nest.
