Woke up this morning to find my cable modem had completely shut down. No led blinking lights.
I thought I would have to buy another modem.
I unplugged the modem, waited a few minutes, then plugged it back in, but still no blinking leds.
I left it unplugged for about 30 minutes, this time it powered up and eventually got it working.
I noticed later the modem was getting very warm.
I thought about where I had placed the modem as it was sitting on top of a pvr cable box which also gets warm. The weather has been hot and muggy in my area and i don't have an air conditioner.
I thought about buying a small fan to allow air to circulate around my media cabinet.
Then I thought why not make my own.
So for the interim, the modem is sitting on top of a DIY USB computer tower fan just like the one in the video.
The modem now feels cool to the touch.

Thanks for the great and simple video. I just spliced a 120mm pc fan to an accessory usb cable (red-red/black-black) and using a Blu 1.0a 5v Usb phone charger adapter is working great, spins as fast as the pc would. Using it for low cost exhaust :) working as planned! I'm sure any usb a/c adapter should work as long as the amps and volts are higher rated on the adapter then the fan, which the 120mm I'm using is 0.16a @ 1.0v so in theory could link up to 5 possibly. But that's for another day :)

If you hook the green to green you can control fan speeds on your pc If you hook blue to black that will be the ground wire
Then red to red and your good to go and if you are wondering what is the green wire the green wire is the D+ wire aka Data.

When I cut an old USB cable it had red and white wires, but I connected the red to red and white to black and it worked perfectly. I've no idea how you managed to connect the wires just by pushing them into the black plastic connecter thing though...I had to pop them out with a pin, stick the USB wires through the plastic box, wrap them around the end of the fan wires and crimp them, then gently pull it all back into the connector box. It worked though

I assume it depends on the fan, some fans are only rated to 5v etc whereas some are rated for 12v, since USB only gives off 5v of power then a 12v fan would more or less be slower than normal or at a "quiet" setting.

    • @TheSatanicGamerFromHell
      @TheSatanicGamerFromHell Před 3 lety +2

If you mean a phone adaptor like a Samsung wall charger then nothing bad will happen those wall adapters have step down transformers inside of them they turn the wall power into the usable power a phone needs to charge usually 5v which means the fan won't work at full speed because pc fans usually need 12 volts. But still if you plug it into a phone charger nothing will happen
Just make sure you don't have any loose wires make sure to isolate the red and black cables do not let them touch. Because then it's not safe

My fan wires are blue, green, yellow, and black, which ones do I use to connect to USB ones with red and black?

can you control the speed of the fan? I tried and it worked but the span does not spin that fast as expected

Because USB uses 5V an the Fan needs 12V, so the speed of the Fan runs at 40-50%.
