Arthur C Clarke - Fractals - The Colors Of Infinity

- Arthur C. Clarke presents this unusual documentary on the mathematical discovery of the Mandelbrot Set (M-Set) in the visually spectacular world of fractal geometry. This show relates the science of the M-Set to nature in a way that seems to identify the hand of God in the design of the universe itself. Dr. Mandelbrot in 1980 discovered the infinitely complex geometrical shape called the Mandelbrot Set using a very simple equation with computers and graphics.
Arthur C. Clarke's soft-spoken style sets the "common man" at ease, and his pinpoint commentary makes the concept of fractals easy to understand. One need not be a stellar mathematician to grasp the concepts and why they are profound. The experts are trotted out, and they, too, explain fractal geometry in ways that are accessible to everyman.
Fractals are part of our lives, and maths informs everything that exists, whether natural or man-made.
When I saw this on TV several years ago, it reminded me of the Douglas Adams (of "Hitchhiker's Guide" fame) book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency." In the novel, a software engineer tries to create a program that sets the flapping of a bird's wings to music using mathematical equations. That is exactly what fractals seem to do; they describe events in nature in mathematical ways, and the section of "Colors" which discusses this is eye-opening.

5:19 "this is really infinity" ... and then Gilmour's guitar comes in. Priceless stuff.
Arthur C. Clarke ROCKS!
I wrote him a letter when I was about 9 or 10 years old, and he wrote back to me!! It was about 1964 or 65, and everyone in class had to write a letter to a famous author asking their favorite childhood books. I only remember that Pickwick Papers was on the list because it was the only one I had never heard of at the time.
There's something ironic about the fact that a documentary discussing (among other things) fractal compression would be victim of a very poor compression algorithm.
I cant even begin to really comprehend this. We created an infinite object in a seemingly finite world. Just that fact, blows me away. How is infinity even possible. what the hell. There is something going on just beyond the veils of our perceptions.
Math. That shape is just a mathematical equation. I personally don't know it, but you could probably find it online somewhere.
if you think this is trippy, wait til you start to make the connections between fractals & how it pertains to behavior. everything truly is fractal.
What do you mean? Sounds interesting.
Vincent Wendén I get what he is saying. If you observe human behavior, it can be very random at times. Especially in times where humans are faced with potentially deadly situations. Humans do seem to defy all logic and order when given the chance.
This terrifies me.
I think he just means that the way humans act and think is also in the form of fractals. All the routes that lead to Rome are a fractal pattern on a map - almost as if the collective consciousness mapped it out following nature’s “code”. Even the stock markets are fractals because of the collective human behaviour being causing it to be that way, which is why we have market crashes reoccurring on different scales (retirations within retirations)
I actually think I’m starting to get it (finally). I would assume that it is why some people in the past gained “higher levels of thinking”. Perhaps a collective groupthink led to religion. There are many similarities and coincidences with fractal thinking that manifest themselves in Buddhism.
I love this documentary. Fractal geometry might even explain the discrepancies between the interface between classical physics and quantum physics. Deeper down it's close to the same but observed behavior is different enough to be demonstrably different.
Sounds plausible to me.
As above so below. (But slightly different...)
The point about the plank length limiting complexity is interesting. Perhaps there is an ultimate resolution of the universe but it does not ring true for me. Every time we think we have bumped up against a limit we find a way to see deeper.
We change our terms of reference. More dimensions etc.
My gut feel is the Universe is fractal in nature.
This dovetails nicely with the thorny topic of religion.
There could be a single truth to be understood,
There could be One True Formula that explains it all.
The God formula.
We as humans might not be equipped to understand that formula but then again consider the perimeter of Great Britain.
If the edges are infinitely detailed then the perimeter is infinite. Ergo perhaps our brains are capable of modelling infinitely complex formulas and ideas.
Mind Blown.
Luv and Peace.
hulaan ko.... kaya ka nandito dahil sa mathematics in the modern world 😂
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
Kakainis haha
lol I like the music they play when they show the fractals like we are all high on math or something.

Hi, if you check out this link:

it describes that someone wrote to the director of the documentary, who confirmed that it was Pink Floyd who wrote the music, but put Gilmour's name on there for copyright reasons. . In fact the synth theme can be found on the Endless River track, "Calling".
i was wondering, cause i felt a lot of pink floyd vibes in it. arthur c. clarke couldn't have picked better musicians to make the music. pink floyd is all about the wonders of nature and the cosmos. it's amazing.
I got inspired into mathematics because of this video.
lomertamahon1 Check out chaos theory. The double pendulum made my mind explode.
Fun to look back at this. To see a master visionary explain the potential of fractal geometry at its very beginning
I keep being brought back to this documentary, time and time again - after seeing it a long time ago. You just gotta love 'em fractals man.
Thank you so much for sharing this stunning documentary! Arthur C. Clarke, Pink Floyd and Mandelbrot - that's a magnificent combination.
Here for our math subject
I used this film in my regular and AP high school geometry and Algebra 2 classes as we looked at geometric patterns and imaginary numbers and iterations. Excellent explanation of both theoretical and applicable math!
these shapes are how light emotion sound and thought interract. They are the exact shapes that make up my vision whilst on 2CB. Literally cant describe how identical they are and the fact that they never end i believe this is something that holds many secrets for existence itself
Welcome to the world of understanding, it's infinite so be careful to what you do as you will repeat in the next life and pay ie karma is part of the infinity be easy on the drugs and treat them as a rare treat anyways trust me lsd shrooms 2ci 2cb 2cp ect are the same deal they open the wormhole and allow you to have a peek inside the same visuals can be reached through meditation as the bhuddist monks will vouch for, its calm time now but death will launch you into this world to reflect on your life you have lived before being reborn and its heaven and hell all in one go, so be nice :) peace and love my friend
Finally some real science from real scientists, thank you!
The M-set the largest set in mathematics! Nice documentary. Thank you.
How can anybody "dislike" this? Have they no sense of wonder? This aspect of mathematics is mind-blowing.
This film is awesome, I just loved the statement "imprint of God". It would make sense. Thank you so much for the insight.
Thanks for sharing this incredible show / video . The Black Buddha - shaped object is the only constant in all colors , patterns , shapes and forms of Infinity, so this is a curious fact of the Mandelbrot Set This Black Buddha object is also the defining commencement and consistent pattern of Infinity or of the M Set. A fact of unique and great substantiation for most people on our Natural Planet .
Watched this years ago with my Dad. Never thought I would find it again.
This is the closest thing I have seen to my highest of high psychedelic drug experiences when I was younger. I honestly felt like I was part of the universe watching it do just this type of thing. If you could see the universe expanding on the large scale I imagine it would be like this.
Yea, I'm pretty sure the universe is some kind of fractal setup, but we're normally on too low a state of consciousness to actually perceive it's fractal nature so we tend to perceive things in the cruder, euclidean-style geometry in everyday life, but psychedelic drugs raise your state of consciousness allowing you to perceive what's really there much more accurately than you can while sober.
Jesse Austin I've come to believe that the basic structure of the universe is fractal, I think the one thing that all of the universes of the Multiverse have in common are fractals.
the universe is indeed infinite, however it is somewhat probable that it is infinitely small rather than infinitely large... of course no one can know but the though is just so enthralling :)
rowan box
Yea your right. I suppose when you are talking about infinity, size is not relevant any more! I know what you mean about how enthralling it is to try to imagine. This is why I'm kinda "against" religion. It is such a limited dumb down explination of what we see in front of us. I would even argue you have wasted part of your life if you have never had the oppertunity to think about what we are talking about here.
Absolutely fascinating...thank you for posting.

yeeshkul.com/forum/showthread.php?40717-The-Colours-of-Infinity-by-Pink-Floyd&highlight=Nigel+Lesmoir-Gordon
It's Floyd - they had to put Gilmour's name on for copyright. The synth theme is on Calling. Perhaps Gilmour wrote all the music, but it's definitely Floyd performing it.
rick and nick also.
40:58 - did this guy invent an “upscaler”, before the word became mainstream? He describes the idea like a pure compression algorithm but seeing these image comparisons blew me away, considering how long ago this was made
This is fantastic - thank you for posting this. This is what CZcams is for, in my opinion. Lucy.
Fantastic! What an artist that creator! Thank you!❤
Watching these now a days it amazes me how far we have come and what wonders we will know in 12 more years from now.
This is my new favourite thing
RIP Mandelbrot and Clarke are experiencing the ultimate fractal journey with their consciousness
I'm super digging the faux-Dave Gilmour //Pink Floyd -esque musical breaks with the trippy fractals.
So its a mathematical explanation for nature's execution....humans are incredible if only we could work together. Yay Fractals! Boo Corporations!
My new obsession, Thank you 🙏🏻
If nature, or the Universe if it were, was to look back on humanity's achievements as a whole, fractals and the revelations that they represent in nature, would probably rank as the highlight to what we have or what any life form within the Universe could possibly understand, formulate, and use; it is without a doubt in my mind, the basis for which we can understand nature's bizarre structures and dizzying scales of both macro and micro worlds.
What I see within the idea of the Mandelbrot Set is how there is a repitition and difinative change between each zoom, then suddenly, some shapes reappear. It is frightening and amazing that we could be looking at math that does what the Universe does!
Beyond perplexed i must absorb understanding its filling my essense with a push to reach further and further to grasp things i never ever bothered to consider. I was simple minded with out education thanks to educational videos and people of remarkable intelligence sharing endless information. I believe i am falling in love hope God guides my heart to understanding and truths of knowledge. Thank you kindly
How wonderful, and how appropriate the Gilmour in it. : )
i was on a trip all day yesterday haha i had my first fry a couple weeks ago and i saw fractals and sacred geometry in the water falling down my window from the light coming through it. i could even control them! it was amazing
This is what I was looking for yesterday.
But yesterday disappeared up your arse?
ARCHAIC SYMBOLISM FACE
Thank you for posting this. Much appreciated. :)
Well Done Bravo!
most informative thing ive ever seen
An entire whole new paradigm for new viewers and myself
Just FYI, the director of the movie has confirmed that the music was actually played and recorded by Pink Floyd, not just Gilmour!
If new to this video you should note that the prevalence of mobile phones and the fact that they have relatively good reception now without large antennas is because the antennas are now fractal.
Also if you wanna create fractal images yourself then check out either Ultra Fractal or Xenodream or ChaosPro or Chaoscope or Fragmentarium or Mandelbulber or Mandelbulb3D.
14:57 "When you get very very fine to very very small details, the variations can become of overwhelming complexity. So complex, that no single picture can possibly give justice to them...If the whole set were represented at this scale, the end of the whole set would go as so far to somewhere near the star Sirius."
hahaha ! Mathporn ! That is ultimately the best way to describe this amazing set and math collection ... BTW mathematics kick serious ass !!!
I imagine that if I dived deep enough in a Mandlebrot set I would find myself looking back :)
Excellent film.
This infinity looks psychedelic. The chance and pre determinism exist at the same time. Interesting insight into God's creation and free will.
Thank You Nives Kovacevic !
Mathematics of the modern world brought me here❤️
In properly celebrating Mandelbrot, let us not forget or overlook the early 20th work of French mathematicians Gaston Julia and Pierre Fatou and their contributions of complex dynamics.
Cheers for the upload
Awesome film.
btw thanks for the awesome upload I've been looking for this
Absolutely correct about psychedelic drugs - 25+ years ago I did LSD and Mushrooms still and remember sensing and seeing these 'patterns' or fractals. When I'd close my eyes, I could see these patterns and follow them. It was a sensation similar to free fall and too intense to keep up. Very similar to the patterns you see when you rub your eyes then close them, only much more detailed and colorful. Kind of scary actually - but beautiful too.
Anyone know where you can get this soundtrack?
I had this on VHS for years; pity the reception wasn't perfect when I taped it. But I really want the last few minutes of this in 1080p...
Excellent Thank you .
Whoa... mathematics is freakin' me out maaaaan! Totes trippy.
Awesome iteration
Grumpbump anyone?
no I made it here by other means.
grumpbump!!
Outstanding
Thanks fractals for making CZcams possible
Excellent!!!
I love watching this stuff while high!
All i could arive at is how unsearchable are his ways. as the heavens are higher than man so Gods thougths are higher man . Yet God is allowing us to slowly see some of his ways!
As a virtual construction your magnification factor is only related to the accuracy of your calculations and for a single zoom-in one can go far beyond the scale from planck length to size of known universe and beyond.
Thanks for sharing the video. I wish you'd included a disclaimer on that description, making it clear that that - especially the contentious line of '...way that seems to identify the hand of God in the design of the universe itself - is very much your interpretation, not necessarily that of Clarke or the panel of experts he interviews here.
Thanks for this! Peace.
That is the visual of Conciousness.
The mandlebrot set is the closest you will get to understanding IWAB - IsWasAlwaysBeen.
Self-Realisation comes when you realise you are the shape in the middle and conciousness playing out around the shape you have Freed your mind and the fragment dissolves back into its Whole. Absorbed it all and the Mind is One with Conciousness.
The Poet and Mathematician Without Division. .
The mandlebrot set is the visual to the Upanishads. 😇😇😇💖💖💖 just remember only the Love will Last When energies return to the Vast.
I am interested in that topic, do you know any sources or books about the connection between fratals and hinduism (or is this just your interpretation)?
My mind has been blown.
I've had the exact same nightmare from childhood that sounds EXACTLY like how that guy's dream inspired him 38:30
Only difference is in mine, the 'switchboard' would span OUT more and more, infinitely
And i'd wake while in my sleep that I just comprehended an infinite collection of objects within just like he said a matrix
It scared me cuz I couldn't move any muscle in my body, it was still asleep but my brain shocked itself back into consciousness. I was paralyzed for like a min every time
Interesting... I had the same kind of nightmare as in your comment (things zooming out, paralysis). However, these stopped once I reached a certain age. It wasn’t until I tried LSD/acid that this visual zoom began to happen again. Very strange but my personal belief is that LSD and other psychedelics are actually tools of viewing things on different scales - both micro and macro.
Very informative. Add &vhs=1 to the end of the URL to create a really cool effect!
A lot of thanks !
this is SO trippy
Man now I wanna code this!
Music by David Gilmour!
in need of balcanys with fenseing could a circuit set be placed along that or a space to a magnafyer coretex as a staple into the human form for greater being?
It amazes me the number of dislikes for this program, how fractal,m lol; a wonderful enlightening journey, thank you.

Someone invent a time machine please
this is why man cannot discover the fundamental particle .... it does not exist we are fractile in nature
This is a piece of the puzzle to bring peace and harmony to our planet and put out those that try to rule us, the question is how?
It looks like Buddha.

@jayc2469 from which Floyds album is that track ?
i love the sound track haha.
What's the music from @4:53-6:45 ? Sounds like the electronic-space-music that used to be played on wxpn in Philly back in the late 70's, late Sat nites...1am-dawn on a program called "Star's End".. if I remember correctly...........
My dim math problem is to find the 4D Hexagon!! A 1/2 line segment perched above and below a unit lineseg is a Hexagon. Also six rays or 3 diagonals. Take the 3 internal diagonals and think of them as where 3 Hexagons are intersecting. Rotate these a bit more than 90 degrees and you get a Triangle Above and Below the Hexagon - A Cuboctahedron 4 internal Hexagon Diagonals, 12 rays. Consider the 4 internal Hexagons as 4 potential Cubeoctahedrons. Rotate these out into the 4D. Get 2 Tetrahedrons...
What if, upon using the fractal-digital-decompression algorithm-thingy, we suddenly noticed an odd bump or occlusion in the birds eye image... then, we dissect the birds eye (the actual one that was in the photo), only to find that it had previously suffered an injury that has a direct correlation to the predicted occlusion? If we didn't find the injury (for example), would that mean that the bird WOULD HAVE been injured in the future (or was by the dissection)? Free will but the Maker knows?
what is the song name from the beginning?
Watching this for the first time, I thought - That's David Gilmour!!!
one of these days 😂
Theres a theory that black holes are actually new universes, and that our universe was spawned by a black hole in another universe
think about that ... inside black holes is a singularity, which spawns another universe, within which black holes form and within those, new universes with their own black holes .... continue on into infinity just like a fractal ? :)
Oh my god!
It's so amazing! Did you seen Charlier-fournier Fractal for Universe
