      Simply put, exceptions cannot be made for a few that will impact all the other passengers. Otherwise it opens the door to requests for all types of exceptions. Book tours through the cruise ship even if much pricier, or you yourself are accountable if you miss the ship’s departure time.
      I say this with all due respect as I almost missed my cruise (by 5 minutes) because I had a cheap friend who insisted on doing our own tour with a private tour company to save a few bucks. I will never do that again.

      That's very true, but if you watch the video, you'll learn that they were on a tour with a tour company. They didn't explain the reason the tour company was unable to get them back to the ship on time. It's common practice to get off the ship and tour the area, but the travelers are kind of at the mercy of the company taking them on the tour. They've probably done this several times on the cruise with no problems. It sounds as though this time was not their fault. Another problem is that the ship's clock is often not the same as the destination's clock. Passengers should know this.

      It is a very common practice that passengers take a 3rd party shore excursion because the ship never has enough shore excursions available for all of their passengers. Also, Norwegian is the worst cruise company for developing tours for anybody except for the very fit passengers. The fact there is a paraplegic in this group speaks that the only way that this paraplegic person could go on a shore excursion was through this 3rd party tour operator.
      Please everybody, think with common sense before accusing this group of 8 passengers as not being responsible and in fact, even reckless.
      They were not irresponsible.
      The ship's captain is the one who was acting with a mean spirit, so much so that the captain refused to take calls from the Coast Guard, Harbor Master and Port Authority when the ship was still fully anchored and in the bay in front of pier.
      Even a SpaceX rocket has a 2+ hour launch window.

      @ruthmauel3195 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Obviously unknown to you, but it is a very common practice to book a tour through a 3rd party and not through the ship's shore excursion team because the ship never has enough provision for all of the ship's passengers to buy a tour through the ship. Norwegian is the worst at developing shore excursions for anybody except for perfectly fit and able bodied people. The fact that a paraplegic person was on this tour is because obviously the 3rd party tour operator was able to accommodate a person in a wheelchair So that was their only option. We were on a 28 day Norwegian cruise and they never had *one* tour that accommodated people in wheelchairs, of which there was several people on board that were in wheelchairs and who wanted to take a ship's shore excursion. Whether it be for reasons of accommodation for a wheelchair or that a ship doesn't provide enough tours for their passengers, it is certainly not about wanting to get a cheaper tour that people are forced into taking a 3rd party tour.

      @@ruthmauel3195 Think about the ship's perspective. I'm not against taking a private tour but that's a risk you take when booking a private tour. It's clearly stated so before booking of the risk. The captain may face disciplinary action by the company if the cruiseline is late for any reason especially if it's not the ship's fault. Other passengers may have scheduled arrangements that if they're late they will also be penalized (flight, hotel, etc.), and the ship will be penalized. This means it costs lots of money to be late for whatever reason. Nobody wants to wait for late passengers that already know the risk if their job is on the line. Moreover, the port tour is a luxury activity, not some life saving requirement you must have, so don't expect any sympathy from others.

      @@imo.124I agree people don't think about how things can go wrong- especially those people that fly in to port the same day the ship leaves home port. We always arrive the night before. There's always a way to do an excursion, though, but to make sure you'll get back to the ship you just need to book with the cruise line. It's that simple. We were late in Belize because one of the tour operator's vans broke down and then we hit traffic. It was a long tour with a river boat ride (a long one), lunch in a village and then a drive to Altun Ha ruins. No docks for large ships so we were tendered which, as I'm sure you know, takes longer than just being a pier runner. We booked through the ship, because of the long excursion & being tendered. Plus there's no actual dock so there isn't a space for ship customers to shop and purchase anything. It's not organized like Cozumel or other large ports. We were coming back on the tender boat at sunset & everyone was on the decks & balconies waiting for us only because we booked through the ship. We made it because they waited. In Tortola two people were left behind because they were doing their own thing on the island & things can happen. We booked a helicopter tour there so we had to drive across the island to their itty bitty "open air" airport. We were the only customers there. It was so awesome and we made sure we were covered so we knew we wouldn't be left behind.

Norwegian is the worst at developing shore excursions for anybody except for perfectly fit and able bodied people. The fact that a paraplegic person was on this tour is because obviously the 3rd party tour operator was able to accommodate a person in a wheelchair So that was their only option. We were on a 28 day Norwegian cruise and they never had one tour that accommodated people in wheelchairs, of which there was several people on board that were in wheelchairs and who wanted to take a ship's shore excursion. Whether it be for reasons of accommodation for a wheelchair or that a ship doesn't provide enough tours for their passengers, it is certainly not about wanting to get a cheaper tour that people are forced into taking a 3rd party tour.

    I have been on several cruises and they make it clear that the ship will sail as scheduled. If you miss the boat then it is on YOU to catch up at the next port. Likely states so on their passes and policies they signed. Too bad, next time, be on time.
