This is one of the golden eras of Miss Universe. Natural beauty without surgeries and the winner was a total package of beauty and brain. Unlike nowadays, very seldom MU picked their winners with those 2 qualities.

Boy! It seems hard to believe it's been 35 years since that Miss Universe Pageant in Seoul, Korea! I watched it that night, and I was captivated by Miss USA, Shawn Weatherly, and I got goosebumps when she was crowned Miss Universe!! I wonder where she is today. I'll bet she's every bit as beautiful as she was 35 years ago! Shawn Weatherly, wherever you are, may God mightily bless you!!! ☺
She became tv actress, I saw her in one or two episodes of Baywatch!!
Today she does real state and is happily married with one boy and a girl. She looks beautiful at 62 !!!!!

I remember very well the closing credit sequence during which Bob Barker and the newly-crowned Miss Universe of 1980 walking arm in arm beneath the cadets' arch of swords (or sabers) as though they were actually married to each other like a king with his queen. :) :)

the present miss universe pageant program should go back to how it was..just like this classic ..just look how beautiful the program was.

Miss USA 1978 was the REAL Miss Universe. Pageant officials, not the judges picked that racist Miss South Africa as the winner because the outgoing Miss Universe was black.
Shawn es sin duda una belleza unica, mezcla de dulzura con personalidad y belleza, de veras muy bien merecido ese titulo en el 80 despues de toda la sequía de coronas que tuvo USA en los 70 donde no ganó ninguna. Considero que a USA no le es muy fácil ganar este concurso ya que hasta la fecha tiene 14 años que no gana el Miss Universe, increíble pero cierto!

Well, you never know !!!!!!, she was very pretty, a bit overweight. But she didn’t passed to the finals in Miss UK that same year and Miss Wales, who didn’t make the semifinals in Miss Universe, won Miss UK, Kim Ashfield, that actually was not pretty.

Hermosisima y muy autentica. De casta le viene, ya que su madre Gloria Fernandez fué Miss Madrid y también es sobrina-prima de Sara Montiel, que en su época fué considerada junto a Maria Felix y Ava Gardner, una de las mujeres mas bellas del mundo. Si te fijas bien y con los años a Maritza se le saca un aire con Sarita, sobre todo con la moña prensada. Conocí a Maritza cuando solo era candidata para el Miss Venezuela 79 y aunque era muy joven,nunca olvidaré su belleza y simpatia. La adoramos.

They don't judge contestants on what you think they do. They have fairly strict guidelines but not so strict that the judges have no leeway. That's why there's so much bloody-mindedness in these results. Either you have what the judges give points for that night, or you don't. On that night, Miss USA had what they were looking for. She was a lovely young woman, and I have no problem with her getting it.

Cuando te digo " la robó " es en buena onda, ya que Maritza era como la Novia Soñada de nuestra generación. Formó en Ensenada un hogar solido y ha sido un ejemplo como esposa y madre y es una excelente persona.Como anecdota ; Judith Grace fué compañera de concurso de Irene Saez en el Miss Universo 81 y sigue guapisima.Saludos

is the crown is going to the winner after the pageant or it they return it again to the MIss U organization?
during 1952 - 2001 versions the winner can keep the rhinestone crown. but in 2002 - present the winner is only entitled to keep the replica of the crown. (Mikimoto, Diamond Nexus and DIC)
