Paul Winchell is such a clever and entertaining guest panelist! His puppet flirting with Arlene is adorable and charming, his banter and "conferences" with Jerry are hilarious, and he's quite proficient at playing the game too... Mr. Winchell is quickly becoming one of my favourite picks for fourth panelist, right up there with Steve Allen and Joey Bishop.
I agree. Most of the 4th panelists are duds as far as playing this game. Winchell carefully chooses his questions to analytically prepare himself to limit the possibilities of his next question by eliminating what the guests do NOT do. Very similar to how Dorothy Killgallen plays the game.
tony Randal is my favorite 4th contestant
I enjoyed it when Mrs. Williams laughed. First time I heard what laughter sounded like by someone born in 1879. It's the same. Oddly enough. LOL
wow 81 years young....so she was born in 1875. that's only 4 years after the Franco-Prussian war & Bismarck finally uniting Germany. we were in the early stages of the Gilded Age, Grant was president, Tilden/Hayes was still a year away & Reconstruction yet to be compromised, & Little Bighorn was also a year away!
people of the later part of the 19th century who lived through 1950s experienced such dramatic change it's mindboggling
+do ht Not to mention she got to see the birth and growth of the telephone, the automobile, movies, etc.
+Beth Di Bartolomeo No doubt!!!! i was just thinking about some historical events around 1875. the technological advancements between 1875 and 1950 is just incredible!!!!!!!!
After all that you have mentioned as to her life experiences, what was Bennett (The Pig) Cerf's question "Does she model bathing suits? HeHeHeHe". Not impressed!!!!!!!
My paternal grandfather was born in 1875. He lived into his 90s.

A shame we can't see the colors of all those beautiful dresses!
I can agree for that point for sure. Even technicolor doesn’t quite get it right. 🤗
I will bet Bennet Cerf would love to be wearing one of those dresses as well
@@errorsofmodernism9715 Why? He was married to two women.
Mrs. Williams looks so much like Tweety's Granny !
Faith Adams She does!
She sure does...
She sure does
All she needs is the hair pins in her hair
Warner Bros.' Granny would have been modeled after elderly ladies of the time (early 1950s), so it makes sense.
People dressed with class. Love this show.
Great memories. WML, is still just as fun and entertaining as it was when watching the live shows.
Thanks for sharing this piece of TV history.
This show is always a surprise! No matter how often I watch, there’s always someone I enjoy seeing again! And the other guests are interesting and unique. Wonderful to see people who took pride in their jobs!
He will always be associated with Chicago '68. I'll never forget seeing it on TV. Hell broke loose inside and outside.
I remember Daily yelling anti-Semitic comments at the convention. The televised scenes of cops beating protesters and passerbys was shocking to a certain 16 year old.
Yes Daley was a racist swine. He was calling Abe Ribicoff a "dirty Jew" because he denounced the police violence outside, on the streets of Chicago.
@@robertsvorinich7959Wasn't quite so shocking to this, then 10 year old. We were NYC metro, and my father worked in Newark NJ, in which there were riots nearly daily - and my parents had survived Hitler's misbegotten war.
We take it for granted how intelligent and well informed the panel is, but I cannot imagine any celebrities today, knowing, in advance where the Political National Conventions were to be held so far in advance, or have the excellent vocabulary, grammar, poise, and deductive reasoning we witness on this show. Truly a class act.
I've thought about how to create a contemporary version. Anderson Cooper could host. Whoopi Goldberg might be good on the panel. But I think most of the panelists wouldn't be regular "celebrities." They'd need to use writers and critics. Rachel Maddow would be great.
Wasn't "so far in advance" the convention was days away.
Please remember Bennet Cerf was publisher who is always paying attention to the news. As well, Dorothy was top notch reporter. These weren't folks avoiding the press, it was the well informed part of the press.
@@kulturekritik9665 a CNN version - the guests would be limited
Imagine being only a few feet away from Miss Universe and you have to be blindfolded. Oh, the humanity!
Mrs. Elizabeth Williams charmed them all!
I will always remain bemused by the idea that Paul Winchell designed and built (with the assistance of Heimlich) the first functional artificial human heart.
Ain't life a kick in the head?
Magnificent Failure - Paul Winchell a talented inventor! Go figure. :)
Not that it makes it so but... "Jarvik denies that any of Winchell's design elements were incorporated into the device he fabricated for humans - the Jarvik-7, which was successfully implanted into Barney Clark in 1982"
That has never been substantiated.
He owned 30 patents
Wow. Another gem. I enjoy these shows immensely.
Thanks for another exquisite post.
Always such a pleasure to watch this show.
Miss Universe Carol Morris is still alive and kicking. (2016)
She is still alive in 2017. She happens to be 81, the same age as the second challenger. Alas, I could find no recent picture of her on Google images to compare her appearance with that of Elizabeth Williams.
If she's still kicking, maybe the Jets could use her. They need a lot of help.
Happy 85 Carol !! GO CAROL !!

Yes, a C L A S S Act (as per @dannydoc) all around! And Miss Universe, Carol Morris, also!... beauty-truly-*and also graceful, charming and well-spoken!
Year after year, intelligent, well-informed, interesting, respectful and witty-even sometimes downright funny-and so well-dressed too: the panel and moderator and contestants. What other show ever could top that? It's not nostalgia for the past (never watched WML till I got a smart phone); it's about missing this kind of QUALITY entertainment on today's TV and media! So great, too, that they have so many episodes to watch (17 years in the original BW series, my favorite)!
My how beauty context contestants have changed. They were once biological women!

The Crook of Cook
At 7:20, John Daly said he knew of no city in the country that handled political conventions as well as Chicago. It's a shame the story couldn't have ended right there with 1968 never happening.

Just down the road apiece from you, it would seem, at least as far as their HQ is concerned.
Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance received on the job training at See's Candies store on La Cienega Blvd. in L.A. in preparation for their famous candy conveyor belt sketch. SNL did a marvelous parody of that sketch, but instead of Lucy and Ethel, they had Gilda Radner play Lucy and used Dan Aykroyd in his stuffed shirt persona in the role typically played by Gale Gordon in later Lucy television series.
www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/lucy-a-bomb/n8652?snl=1
See's Candies is currently owned by Berkshire Hathaway, which bought it in 1972. It represented a shift in philosophy by Warren Buffett from solely purchasing undervalued assets to also purchasing quality companies with strong reputations and brand recognition. In 2007, Buffett called See's Candies "the prototype of a dream business."
I wonder if it could be said that the company was founded because "Mary See, Mary did."
I was aware of Mr Bennett certification years before I ever watched what's my line. I enjoyed all his books. I have 6 of them. Thoroughly enjoyed them.
Once again John gives it away by saying 'We won't tell you our guest's hometown' which would immediately clue the panel to ask about the town.
i wonder what else miss universe was trying to say before she left
15:21 After Jerry asks Would you like to go out with me after the show Arlene says: I AM your date. Although it cannot be easily heard so sweet of her to say it. She is totally into their "relationship".
Paul Winchell is the voice of Tigger right though the late ‘90s! I never knew!

You can tell how good an actress Arlene is, since she really makes you believe that she isn't really vomiting inside by having to fake smooches and romance with that God awful puppet. She should have demanded a raise immediately for having such humiliating things to have to perform

She must be a great actress, because I thought she was legitimately having fun here, not vomiting inside. But that's just me.

Has anyone else noticed that when a contestant starts writing on the blackboard a man in the audience nearly always guffaws. It sounds like the same laugh every time. It often sounds very inappropriate. In this episode the laugh came just as the old lady appeared. I wonder if this laugher was a regular member of the audience, a sort of 'warm up' guy.

Yes I have heard him in almost every episode. As you say, he could be a 'warm up guy' or someone else from the staff. He sounds drunk. :/

mayor daley one of the most corrupt politicians of all time
When it comes to most politicians, I guess that is a distinction without much of a difference.
To Miss Universe, Bennett exclaims, "Plug Over!" Yet, mentions Coca Cola every chance he gets. #Cerfing Wikipedia posts a movie credit for Miss Morris, "Crazy Love" starring Jeff Chandler, which an IMDB search reveals never happened. The Spanish version doesn't make the same mistake, but alas it gets her birth date wrong. No, Carol never made it in Hollywood, nevertheless, she did find love and strike oil in Texas.
I thought it was very rude that he said plug over.
I think what he says is "Plug-ola", which was a major concern for games and quiz shows in the 1950s. He might have been warning John and the contestant to be careful about FCC rules.
Carol Morris looks a lot like Elizabeth Taylor, but frankly Elizabeth Taylor has more charisma.
John gave too much information with the mayor when he said ".... page one of a 'specific' paper... " Should have just let them keep asking 'yes or no' questions.
On many occasions, John gives away vital information, leading one of the panelists to figure it out.
This one was funny!

True.
So a mosquito counter became a teeth counter at the later period of his life. So good..
I find myself googling many contestants out of my own curiosity to see if they're still living and bios.
Carol Morris was from Ottumwa, Iowa. I wonder if she was the girl who dumped Radar on M*A*S*H in Season 1, Episode 14? They were almost the same age. Ha! Oh yeah - Bennett Cerf was known for being a pompous ass, no surprise there folks.
Check out the Dress on Carol Morris. Dazzling!
Miss Kilgllian..poor john :-D
Carol Morris is absolutely gorgeous! 😍
Bennett Cerf was such a cad, asking Miss Williams if she modeled bathing suits and then guffawed at what he thinks is such a clever remark.
@Mark Richardson Hal Block was just plain RUDE!! Bennet's great
Cad for sure. Sexual harassment....wobbling on the line. He had no boundaries.
The modern propensity for condemning persons in the past for not behaving with contemporary ways is purely irritating. It may not be great by current standards, but that's how it was. In this case, they had polite, formal manners which don't exist anymore. And Bennet Cerf was only trying to be kind to an 81 year old woman indicating she was still lovely, pretty, etc., as part of that. It's called history.
Introducing "Miss Kilgillian" and "Mr. Doiley"...
7:20 That may have been true in 1956, but it was not in 1968.
SHARP EYE. I believe the LOONEY TUNES cartoonists drrew TWEETY,s granny after seeing her on this episode of WML. SINCE she was a commercial model . Mrs. Williams signed a contract with Warner Brothers Looney Tunes producers to sit and pose for the cartoonists, to use as Tweety's granny. She got 2200 to pose as well as a residuals clause.
They nailed it for sure.
Daly gave it away on the newspaper question by saying "In the past week"...
Gosh, did anyone else notice a distinct similarity in the faces of the “2 Dalies?”
Someone forgot to tell Paul Winchell that this was "What's My Line?" and not "The Jerry Mahoney Show"!
This is typical for ventriloquists, they are so selfabsorbed that they drown every show in their verbal diarrhea. I think it has something to do with having to think for two, you simply can't stop jabbering. The same happened in british panel show QI with Nina Conti.
Not as bad as a certain Mr Marx
You just can't make people satisfied.
I don't usually like dummies but I love Jerry and Paul.

The Democratic National Convention is again here in Chicago in August.
The mafia arrives again. Damn Daley
He sure reminds me of Al Capone. He probably would have seen Daley as a competitive threat.
College man doesn't know that a mosquito is an animal??? No wonder America lost its way
Can't help looking at John Daly s forehead creases
Back in the day when people were nice and civil.
All American girl....what a concept
i wonder if mrs. williams is still alive.
She was 81 in 1956...that would mean she would have been 144 at the time you commented and 147 when I responded. Not impossible, but I have a feeling we would have heard of her being the oldest woman in the world.
John Charles Daly no relation to Richard Daly.
The former's show was weekly, but the latter was in front of the public almost daily.
Also it's mayor Daley not Daly so obviously they're not related.
Richard J. Daley ?????
It's very suspicious to me that Bennet got right off onto politics with the mayor. Normally he goes straight to entertainment.
+Janet Williams 1956 was, as Mr. Saiyan notes, an election year, and the Convention season was right around the corner. As in, starting in a week or so. And also, the way they applauded -- not hugely vociferous, respectful, and no whistling -- didn't indicate someone entertainment-focused or beautiful
(So no, no cheating.)
Because John keeps throwing clues, in this case, "we won't give you the home town" which would lead to asking about the town, and away from entertainment.
Apparently if you are famous, people applaud and admire you. Corruption? Who cares?
Do you own a machine?
That ventriloquist dummy is weird.
And not particularly funny.
John Daly said "No city handles conventions better than Chicago." When your wrong, your wrong. How un-prophetic.
And when "your" wrong, you're wrong.
To this day, Chicago has held the most political conventions, all more than 50 years ago, in part due to the large number of rail connections and in part, relatedly, to its relatively central location. As of 1956, John's statement was perfectly correct. No one could have foreseen 1968. Chicago has not held a presidential nominating convention since then, and given that Illinois is now a deep blue state (whereas it was the ultimate swing state between 1920 and 1996, voting for the winner every time but once), and the memories of 1968, it is unlikely to host another such convention anytime soon.
@preppysocks209 at least not until 2024😉. but since that comment is 3 years old, point made. regardless of my smart alecky comment.
Dorothy was looking particularly foxy tonight.
The 'dummy' gives me the creeps. Remember the dummy in the film, 'Magic'?
Me, too. Don't like those dummies but like Paul a lot. Very intelligent man.
Jerry Mahoney came first. It's precisely because of his popularity that horror movie dolls are made to look like him as an homage and parody.
I am so SICK of that DUMMY!!! (as I'm sure John must have been) Maybe that's why the never had him back
I imagine the hair of John Daly, Bennett Cerf and Mayor Daley smelled like petroleum.
Vitalis! Reminds me of my dad, a WWII military vet. RIP
I see I commented on this one a year or so ago. Don't remember anything about it, so I think Arlene flirting with Jerry drove me off. I'm still mildly creeped out by dummies, but when I stop watching and just listen while doing something else, the humor can get through. (So clearly, Edgar Bergen would have been perfect for me.)

it was an election year & the audience's reception was lukewarm thereby indicating someone who was not an entertainer
Not really. The man didnt disguise his voice. Often that indicates sports or politics. Since the convention was happening at the time, it led him on the path.
