  • 78 Mercury Grand Marquis 312,000 Miles Near Mint 1 Owner 6.6L 400 Big Block Classic Youngtimer www.1ownercarguy.com This is a very cool car. Usually I like cars with really low miles but this car is sol cool because it has 312,000 original miles on it and runs like a newer car. This is only a 1 Owner Car and yes the miles are actual. The previous owner drove the car back and fourth from Canada to California. You would never guess the miles by looking at the car. The factory baby blue paint is in great shape and has a very nice shine to it. The factory white vogue top looks great on the car and is in about as good of shape as you will find. The body is straight as can be and the paint is original. It has the 6.6L 400 engine that fires right up and runs great. It has been rebuilt along with many other things on the car. I talked to the mechanics that worked on the car and they remembered the guy and how good he took care of his car and really liked it. You would have to really like a car to put that many miles on it. The car feels and handles like a newer car and just floats down the road. The interior is in mint condition along with the rest of the car. Only the drivers seat shows minimal wear. It looks like he was the only one that made the trips because none of the other seats look like they hardly ever got sat in. Everything about this car is just clean as can be. You won't find another car like this.

I absolutely love this car. I love the big American boats. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and we always had big cars. When they started downsizing them in the late 70's I so was unhappy with the results. I thought it was the end of the world. Nothing beats an old car big car ride. This colour was known as Robin Egg, a favourite in the 70's. I can imagine the engine is about a 500ci...big gas guzzler. Since the original owner drove it to BC, it no doubt avoided the brutal winters. BC lower mainland hardly gets much snow. Its the Canadian California...-3c is a cold day there, whereas Alberta is use to -40c. I lived in both provinces and I prefer BC winters. I take it she doesn't have a block heater on it. lol! Love the way you cruised in it. Just like riding in one back in the old days. I currently drive a 1992 Crown Victoria, which I refer to as the small downsized model. My dad had a 1970 Dodge Monaco, mother had a 1966 Ford Galaxie, which is what I dream of owning again. Love the car and the video.

The Fords, Mercs, and Lincolns of the era were tolerable! The MoPars, while concocted of CHEAP parts (EXCEPT for their drivetrains) WERE FAR BETTER! G.M.s were ALWAYS "the brand of choice" by those who ACTUALLY BELIEVED their advertising!

  • @_EightySix

It's so weird but I can actually smell that car just by looking at it. The interior and the exhaust. I'm 35 but there were still plenty of cars of this era on the road in my early life, and I remember riding in them. New cars are nice, but they definitely don't make them the same. Big heavy cars with V8's, so nice. Those plush cushy seats, big heavy doors, even the window switches were metal, the seatbelt clips. 🤤

That engine is a Modified Cleveland with a diff crank for a longer stroke. They were said to breathe well. Pretty fast car for such a monster. Had this exact car in Antique Cream color. some punk kid pulled out from the curb tapped me in the side forcing me into head on. It still drove but was mangled . Had 186,000 on the clock and was still running strong. The 351M/400b is a great engine. They also dropped 460cid in the early 70s Marquis.

When my big brother the would be racing car driver blew the motor he left it on the side of the highway and took the plates. It was never heard from again. That was 30 years ago. Part of the fun and beauty of buying a classic car is knowing it's history - and this was a definite one owner car - not sure what commenter Mario Partida is talking about. A quick google search shows that this car was bought new by John Whitmeyer, an avid lover of trains and a member of the Pacific Railway Society and he was in fact 89 when he passed on in 2012. That man must have loved that car. Hope it falls into good hands.

Interior dark brown. I absolutely love all the chrome hide away headlights and rear skirt's. Done away with the original hubcaps and put 15 inch Tru spokes rims on. I was messing around with the column because I couldn't figure out way the steering wheel wouldn't tilt in order to tilt the wheel I had to pull the turn signal arm. When I bought her she had a true 52.000 miles. Best part I stolen the car for 500 plus tax.

My dad's first car was a 78 Grand Marquis. It had no paint, but no rust either. He got it for dirt cheap because the owner was going to jail in a few days :)

Even though I had a 23 old grand marquis I honestly still like it and I find it pretty reliable somehow it has 304thousand miles even though it's 23 years old.

Those aftermarket shocks look exactly like the factory shocks on my grand marquis. Sunroof is another word for leaky roof.

I love all these HUUUGE cars which you seem to find from time2time. Lord knows where you find em.
Cool and groovy though -and you're so right about That. I think you are lucky to able to appreciate all these different cars, if only just for a while. Kind of an ideal situation I gues-spose, so thanks for going into all that 'Good stuff' /the details.
I just want you to know that there Are those of us out here who really do appreciate all the finer points of what exactly these cars are like inside and what each component is made from (etc). For me, it's all about the history and excitement of your uploads, but I hope you sell/have sold her and wish you every happiness in life, as you seem a happy man ! = )

It's insane how nice cars from California are. This car would not look the same way in the Midwest, but I guess if it's garaged it might be ok either way.

+TheGoodChap 99.99999% of cars in auto wreckers in CA are in better shape than what is on the road in the northeast.

The cow catcher bumpers really took away from the Marquis line starting in 1973. The 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 Marquis Brougham's were among the best looking of the series. They were unique, dependable and easy to service. The interior had a very expensive custom look to it. Just as nice as a Lincoln Continental.
Who needed a Lincoln when you have a Marquis Brougham for much less.
