I Found 2 Beautiful Medieval Artefacts on the Thames Mudlarking. Can You Help Me to ID One of Them?

  • The Mudlarking Gods were definitely on my side today! And why? Because I found two spectacular artefacts one after the other and this is extremely rare! At least it is for me. I meet up with my good friend and fellow mudlark Kevin from the channel ‪@medwaymammalianmudlark‬ and we head on into central London to do a spot of mudlarking. Watch this video to see what we find and then join me on a fascinating walk in London as we discover more about a certain King.
Special thanks to Jonnie Fielding of ‪@bowlofchalk‬ who takes me on a walk in London where we visit sites related to the doomed King Charles I. This is a video you definitely do not want to miss! You can find Jonnie on social media platforms @bowlofchalk and if you are wanting to arrange a bespoke original walking tour in London then I would highly recommend Jonnie and Bowl of Chalk. You can also find Jonnie's website here :- www.bowlofchalk.net
Thank you too to Kevin Dyer. Kevin, can't wait to get out for another lark soonest! And thank you to you all for watching.
See you soon. Don't forget you need a permit from the Port of London Authority to mudlark on the River Thames. Find details here:-
    www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Tham...
    See you soon.
    Love Nicola xx

Nicola. Thanks so much for having me. Lovely to chat about Charles I. Also ...just a quick update, I mention about doing 'pay what you want' weekend walks in the video, which I did for about 12 years. We filmed this last year and as of January, I moved to having a fixed price (£15 per person), but you can find the details and current schedule on my website.

42:43 Appears to be an EDWARD IV (1461-1483). Silver Penny.
Great old find! Wiki says: Edward IV was King of England from 4 March, 1461, to 3 October, 1470, then again from 11 April, 1471, until his death in 1483. He was a central figure in the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars in England fought between the Yorkist and Lancastrian factions between 1455 and 1487.

@@ichbin5200See if creating a hostile work environment is illegal in your state. It is here in California. You should have a Dept. Of Labor in your state. Give them a call & see if it can be stopped. Bosses that are bullies are unacceptable. They use cruelty, yelling, and verbal abuse because they lack the intelligence and maturity to speak in a normal manner to employees.Give calling a try. The call can always start out anonymous until you decide if you can press charges. In many states it's also illegal to fire someone for turning you in. I'd look for a different job while you are in this process. Can you even stand the idea of putting up with that garbage for 10-20 yrs? Life is too short. You can also get an attorney. Some will not want $ up front unless they win in court. There are many things they can sue for. An example is emotional distress, anxiety, loss of sleep, PTSD, depression etc. if you have a doctor you can talk to them and see if they feel it's affecting your health. Promise you can get help.💕

I bet the English breathed a huge sigh of relief when Charles II was restored to the throne. Cromwell ruled with a fist of iron - he actually banned Christmas and Easter! So, for eleven dismal years, the poor English were forbidden to celebrate these 2 occasions, as Cromwell disapproved of all the boozing and gluttony that took place. People were also not allowed to sing - unless it was a hymn. Cromwell the Puritan was a real killjoy!

Greetings from Australia Nicola. I did a boat trip from Greenwich up to the Tower in 2016 and a great bloke on deck gave a fantast8c talk on the Cockneys and the river and the old way of life for the Cockneys. He was a real Cockney and I wasnt aware they were slowly dissappearing. So when we departed I gave him a pretty decent tip. Fair dinkum he was so grateful he gave me a big hug and said youre a bloody champ. I was really touched as he really meant it. His talks were his sole income. What a great bloke. I sincerely hope he is ok.

What super finds. So tiny. I don’t think I could see them these days! The walk and history lesson were fantastic. Really enjoyed that. I was fortunate quite a few years ago now, to have been to a lovely Christmas party in Whitehall’s Banqueting House. The early reception was in the vaults. But when they led us up for dinner in that splendid hall with that amazing ceiling full of red and gold furniture- mind blowing. I really enjoyed that night. And yes, the window Charles I exited to his scaffold, is marked. The sense of history pressing in was palpable.

That Elizabeth 1 coin is an absolute beauty! Well done on finding those tiny hammered coins. The top of the Tudor money box has to be my favourite. Such an interesting story to something I'd easily have overlooked!

Nicola. I'm a big fan. I always enjoy watching you find remarkible pieces of history out of the Thames river. Thank you for getting Jonnie to give us a walking tour in London. I've never enjoyed learning about British history so much. He really made all those details so fun. Right now I'm off to find his channel and learn some more. Thanks again for all you do. Keep up the great work.

Really enjoyed this video, thank you Nicola. The Charles 1 walk was brilliant, I’d never noticed the black number on the clock & wouldn’t have understood it, if I had. Thanks again for your continuing videos.

The closest I ever got to mudlarking was rooting about in the dumping ground of an old farm we bought in Glengarry, Ontario Canada. The original owners came from Ireland during the potato famine, and I found many pottery shards, horse teeth and square nails. A wonderful feeling, like finding history in your hands.

Glengarry in Irish means the Glen or valley of the gardens - an Irish term for an area devoted to agriculture

Nicola - LOVE your videos! One thought - would it ever be possible to sit down and go through every single thing you find in a square foot or two? I always think I see other things right next to where you pick up some treasure or another, and it makes me wonder what else is there. Cable, pins, shells, plastic rubbish…. And stones, bricks, broken beer bottles…. I’d love to see that video. Thank you for what you do!

Hi, Nicola - Susan here. Really enjoyed this video! With a crummy knee, my walking tour days of London are behind me, so I got to enjoy it vicariously through you! I've always been fascinated with the period of Charles I, so it was also fun to see the sites involved. And 2 hammies! Wow!
