There’s a science to mathematically calculating the tire size, transmission, engine cam, and overall weight of your car. Vic takes you through the process of breaking these all down, and using them to find the perfect gear ratio for the optimal performance of your vehicle.

great video. shorter rear gears is not always the answer! now if you install a turbo. a higher rear gear could probably work better and you can cruise high ways better!
Man, this video is great, thanks for sharing this knowledge with us, i am trying to better understand how gear ratio affect performance on a car, not only final drive, but individual gears spacing too, and this video helped a lot, great to know about the computer controlled transmissions as well.

Got a 86 MC SS, 6.0 Gen 4 with a Howard’s rattler cam, ls3 heads, (pending 4l80e) on 18s 275/40/18 rear
With a 8 speed transmission you can go with 4.11s and still do 130 on the freeway I got 4.11s in my donk with a 4l80e I do 80 mph at 2500 rpm which is not bad
8spd And 4l80e totally different. You can use it but old gearing thinking is different with the 6 spd and up trans
Could use a bit of advice guys. I have a 1988 Caprice police car with a “stock” 05’ LQ4 LS and 4L65E swapped in. I am building this car for sale and I need to know the best gear ratio to go with.
If I do install a cam it will be the only upgrade other than the intake. Howard’s Rattler Howards “Rattler” (Duration 275/282, Lift .525/.525) Lifters, pushrods, and trunnion upgrade is a given.

The largest wheels would be 26” Rucci and smallest wheels would be 15” TWW G12’s
