    2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, Opeth. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
    OPETH’s new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.
    Sorceress Track List:
    1. Persephone
    2. Sorceress
    3. The Wilde Flowers
    4. Will O The Wisp
    5. Chrysalis
    6. Sorceress 2
    7. The Seventh Sojourn
    8. Strange Brew
    9. A Fleeting Glance
    10. Era
    11. Persephone (Slight Return)
    ”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
    For Sorceress, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

      In the studio tour they did recently, there are guitars all scattered around but they're all 6 string, so they might just be rocking massive strings. Either way, this is something new and weird. Looking forward to hearing more.

      Simple riffing, low tuned guitars? Is Åkerfeldt alright? I mean he was nagging about low tunings for like a decade and everything (?). Not complaining though, it's great that they experiment and I like it. Looking forward to listen to it on a pair of good speakers. Just now the recording seems off.

    Absolutely tremendous. Reviews will echo that notion (mine included) and our goal should be to share this to the ends of the earth.
    In a way, the heavy riffing interwoven with those fantastic cleans rings like a compromise. What's even more impressive about that is no such goal was present, instead just being the natural intrepid exploration of a band. This is the mature glow of a band that explored their Earth, then decided to pursue sonic space travel to find new worlds.

      I saw your review as well. It was a different point of view, a good point of view. I'm one of those who is stuck in the middle. I'm neither completely republican, or completely democratic. I'm neither pro-growls or anti-growl.
      I am however, pro-progressive anything. I'm glad Opeth decided to release the official version of this track, cause the guitars in this other video sounded fuzzy at the bottom. Like overly fuzzy. This could very well be the authors intent, or it was just the audio quality in the other video. (not yours :P)
      I digress. I have found myself replaying this track over and over now, and it's slowly growing on me. It's sure heavy, there's obvious talent + chops, and character. Huge sound. In a good way. AND I have yet to even read the lyrics, which is why I came here in the first place. lol

      No they don't, what the fuck are you talking about. I've seen them live 3 times over the past three years, and they played one or more songs from Ghost Reveries at each show. If they hated it, then explain why they played it live in its entirety during their 25th Anniversary Tour last October. I don't know why it was marketed as a tour because it was only show, but I was at that show and they CELEBRATED the album because it was also the album's 10th Anniv.
      They also played "The Grand Conjuration" when I saw them at Wacken last year, and "Ghost Of Perdition", "Atonement" and "Reverie" when I saw them in Boulder, Colorado in 2013.

    I hate the fact that so many people are hating on this track. If you're not a fan of the last few Opeth records, that's fine. Then go back and listen to their old stuff. Some bands are like that. But you don't need to bitch and moan about how they aren't "metal" anymore. Opeth is a Prog band. Prog can be heavy and brutal, but also can be calm and soothing. I think they've always done a good job of maintaining a happy medium between the two. If you don't like the track then move along. I like it and can not wait for the album to drop in Sept!

    Eternal Rains Will Come and Moon Above, Sun Below, are some of the best

    I have not heard this new stuff, but i'm not upset with Opeth changing their music. They are just being artists making the shit they like to play.
    If you want growl then go listen to the albums with growl. I've been listening to black water park again for a few days now and I'm still surprised at how great that album was. I guess my point is that you cannot ask for another blackwater park or ghost reveries or orchid or any of the older album because they have already done those. Go listen to what you like, and be grateful Opeth created them.
    If the new music is what the band want to play, then lets support them. I'd rather that they are playing the music they enjoy, than them hating playing shit they dont want to play anymore.

    I realize this track has garnered some what of a mixed reaction from fans, but that's normal at this point in Opeth's career. Almost everything they do now gets a lot of mindless bashing. (Not saying it doesn't get constructive criticism either, but there is a lot of unfair treatment in this as well)
    Out of the past 3 albums that have been different (including this one), my hopes are highest for this one. The fact that Opeth can transition from such a groovy keyboard intro to a similarly groovy yet crushing, chuggy riff is what made them strong from the very beginning. Whether it be acoustics, keyboards, or distortion, they're solid and always will be. This song, to me, feels more energetic and lively than, well, ANYTHING on Heritage or Pale Communion. While they were both fantastic albums, they at times, felt dull. The riffs in this track are simple, yet effective. The fact that they're simple makes some people think they're boring, but for me, it's not boring. It's a banger.

    • @ganondorfchampin
      @ganondorfchampin Před 8 lety +3

      I found Cusp of Eternity and The Devil's Orchard both sounded much more lively than this song, which sounds flat. I do have high hopes for this album (if nothing else I love the cover art :P), but I've found this song to be a disappointment. I completely disagree with your assent of the riffs in this song, they are so dull.

    • @hazardousjazzgasm129
      @hazardousjazzgasm129 Před 8 lety

      I don't think the riffs are boring because they're simple. Everything Nick Drake writes is very simple yet very harmonic and beautiful. The riffs in this song are boring because it's part typical open-chord chugga nonsense that's been done to death for decades. Since when was Opeth supposed to be about switching to a new genre, but contributing absolutely nothing to said genre?

    • @ganondorfchampin

    • @exoticeagle9562
      @exoticeagle9562 Před 8 lety

      +ganondorfchampin I really don't see how Cusp of Eternity's chuggy riff is any different from this. Alright, Cusp DOES HAVE a bit more emotion and a bit more density. I can easily hear that. But it's still a very simple track, much like this one. I imagine Cusp, when it first hit CZcams, got a lot of the same comments. "Boring. Dull", etc etc. Now people praise it to death. In a few years, this track might be looked back on and enjoyed. Because right now, it's new, and right after listening to classic Opeth, sure, it may sound boring and distasteful (if that's even a word xD). But after multiple listens, I mean MULTIPLE, there's a greater chance that it will be enjoyed.

    Space is the first word that comes in my mind to describe the direction taken by Opeth but it's simply authentic and original. A less melodic than older albums with growls but with several listening, I really appreciate what I hear!

    To me OPETH is the best when they get really jazzy, be it slow and melancholy moody or fusion-like and technical. "Sorceress" is one of my favorite OPETH songs as it sounds really 70s proggy with that fusion jazz intro riff arrangement, and then you have these 90s sounding alternative metal choruses and chugga-chugga parts, perfectly balanced. It's like a compilation of heavy prog, epic, spanning for decades, paying tribute to its jazz roots. Excellent song!

    is it possible to just have this entire video tattooed onto my body? i love the artwork on the latest record so much
    The peacock is so magnificent, like the perfect blend of grace and beauty with Evil and Maliciousness, something simple like the colour of its eyes and the gold that encompasses them, just makes it look so expressive, Simple, Beautiful, and yet horrifying
    and the way the feathers look matted? honestly i could not compliment the artist enough, ive always loved Opeths dark art style but im so captivated by this record.
    Comparing it to something like the dark and ominous blackwater park Its such a vast contrast, the same can be said with the multiple opeth sounds we've heard over the years aswell, but i have always and will always love this band
