    Are steam mops useful at all? Well if you are someone who likes to disinfect your home using chemical based cleaners, a steam mop is a good chemical free alternative to disinfect. Some steam mops also come with attachments that help you steam different types of surfaces - for example your kitchen countertop for stubborn oil stains, grout in your tiles, your bathroom walls and so on. Remember not all steam mops have these attachments - some are pure floor mops, some come with additional attachments.
    The two main reasons I am apprehensive about steam mops.
    The run time - steam mops have a run time of 15-25 minutes only after which you need to give it a break from steaming. This can be a very short time if you are mopping your entire house or you are doing deep cleaning of specific areas of your house - like bathrooms.
    The connectivity - since these are corded - a long cord length is required if you want to cover an entire room without continuing to switch the plugpoint every time you want to clean a different portion of the room. This can be worked around by using an extension cord but this can be a hassle for daily cleaning. In addition, some of the models don’t have an Indian plug point so you may need an adapter.
    There are not too many steam mop models in the market currently. Given the specifications of the models available currently - consider a steam mop only when:
    If you have a small to medium sized house - since the run time is small, a steam mop cannot be used easily for one continuous cleaning in a large house. If you can mop your house in less than 15-25 minutes - then you can consider this.
    If you don’t like to use chemical disinfectants - a steam mop can be an alternative for using chemicals in your mopping water.
    If you are looking for an answer for deep cleaning surfaces and grout - some steam mops have attachments that you can use for cleaning your kitchen counter tops, windows, shower doors, grout. These can be useful for cleaning the surfaces and grout. Based on reviews, tough grout stains do not go but if you are just about starting to get grout, this may be useful.
    By now if you are convinced you need a steam mop - which one to buy? I compared Deerma, multiple models of Black and Decker and multiple models of Eureka Forbes. My main criteria was run time as a short run time does not help at all in this case. Other factors considered were wattage, cord length, swivel angle, attachments. Here are my top two recommendations:
    If you are looking for one with both floor and surface cleaning - I recommend the BLACK+DECKER 1321 which has a 20 minute run time, a 1600W motor - which is one of the highest, a 6m cord length - which is again one of the highest amongst all models compared. With a 3.8 rating and around a 10,000 rupees price point, this model is ideal as a multi purpose steam mop
    If you are only looking for floor cleaning - I recommend the BLACK+DECKER 1620 which has the best run time of 25 minutes, a 1600W motor, and a 4m cord length. With a 3.7 rating and around 7.5k price point, this model is ideal as a single purpose floor steam mop.
    Both of these models offer a 1 year warranty on the product, can be up and running with steam in 15 seconds and have a 180 degree swivel for more flexibility in cleaning.

    Hi Saumya, I use the B&D 13E5 model. It works well for me. I use it continuously for 30mins-1hr, to clean my 3BHK (1530sq ft). I take break just to refill the water tank after cleaning around 2 rooms. Steam gets produced in few seconds. Cleaning quality is good as the microfiber mop pad wipes up all dirt with the help of steam. But if I use the same pad for whole house, it gets too dirty, depending on how dirty the floor was to begin with. Either we can wash the mop after cleaning half house and then continue, or use the refill pad (purchased separately) and clean both at the end. If the floor is regularly cleaned and less dirty, one pad can be used for whole house without any break. The main issue is the cord length as I find it insufficient to cover a big room like living, from one end. We may need to change the plug points at different corners. To work around this, I bought an extension cord and connect the mop to it which works well for me. I keep the extension connected at the middle of the apartment (dining), and from there I can move the steam mop to all rooms without switching plug points. I use only filter water for refill, as very less water is required for cleaning (around 3 cups for whole house). I use steam mop and spin mop alternatively (either, once a month), to get the water cleaning satisfaction too. Hope this review helps.

      Hi Priya, very helpful! Thank you! Are you able to use it for more than 30 min without it stopping or getting heated? Cos this was one of the problems many people have highlighted regarding steam mops

    • @Priya-dm5ow
      @Priya-dm5ow Před 2 lety

      @@TheGrapevineIndia Yes, the machine has not stopped on its own or got heated beyond limit. But I have to stop it in between, maybe in 10-15 minutes, to refill water while it is stopped for a few minutes and then restarted. Since I mop my home only once a month, and that too with spin mop at times, I can say that I have used the steam mop only a few times in the last one year (since I purchased it). No issues so far. It is very convenient if we decide to do a quick mop, as there is no hassle of bucket and water. Only the mop pad needs to be washed after cleaning, which can be done over a sink or in bathroom. Some people use washing machine, which I don't prefer due to hygiene reasons.

    I use the B&D 13E5 model. It runs for long periods. I just need to keep filling it with water. I use an extension cord to deal with the cord length problem. However, I've found it leaves water stains on the floor. It gets the floors really clean and the swivel head is perfect for getting into corners. If you've got a build-up of dirt in a corner, the steam mop will get it out in no time.

Ticks all the boxes - Except - the mop Velcro wears off pretty quickly. I think you have a reason for not including two major brands in the steam cleaning business - Bissell and Karcher. While Bissell steam mops looks more like the ones you compared, the Karcher models look like cannister vacuum cleaners and come with different attachments. I have found my steam cleaner (not mop) great for cleaning melted cheese from the sandwich maker, cleaning stove, cleaning windows and shelves, etc.
