    I am up to speed now. I watched everything Garden Like a Viking has Posted. Its just starting to turn into spring here. Everything is still dormant, and all I can do is collect leaves as they blow into my driveway, and play with my composter. I am not confident that the JMS would work for me with the leaf stuff I have, but I want to get spraying the lawn and growing areas to get the ground woke up and pumping. I am dying to try everything I have recently learned! 🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻‍🏭✨💖🙏🌞

    I had a method for rain collection I wanted to build. It's simple, really, but clean barrels are hard to come by and new ones are running about $120 👀 in my area. Anyways, mine goes as follows.
    1. Acquire a closed lid plastic drum. You want the type that has 2 small removable openings. The openings usually require a three-pronged wrench but there's other ways of removing them without one.
    2. You're gonna mount the barrel on it's side with one opening at the top and the other at the bottom. You'll need to build/buy a small, square/rectangular stand about 2 foot high and roughly the length of your barrel. If you build it you should consider making the rear about 6 inches taller so the barrel will slant downwards. This will help later when accessing the water. If not, just put something under the rear so that the water will flow downwards towards the bottom opening.
    3. Place the stand and barrel below your gutters at the corner of your house or another building. If you don't have gutters you can still use an area where the water pours off quite well. This will also work on sheds, carport, etc.
    4. Remove both caps on the barrel openings and run a pipe/tubing/hose/etc from your gutters down towards the top opening. You want to leave some room because next you want to attach some small PVC piping that will screw into the opening. You'll need 2 small pcs and a PVC elbow; total.
    5. On the top piece that points up to your piping running down from the gutters, you'll want to line the top pipe up and have it pour into a funnel that fits inside the piece coming from the barrel. But do not actually connect the piece coming from the gutters down to the funnel. You want to leave it disconnected for very minimal maintenance or if you need to adjust and move it.
    6. Once everything is lined up and connected correctly, you'll need to cut a small, horizontal gap about 75% of the way into the side of the funnel. Inside that gap you'll simply add some mesh or screen, etc as a debris filter. The smaller the better but be sure from time to time to keep it clean from debris.
    7. Your bottom opening of the barrel you'll need to add a PVC spigot you can twist on and off when water is needed.
    8. No need to worry about bugs, mosquitos, etc getting in though I wouldn't use this water for anything other than gardening because after a while mold and bacteria may grow inside due to heat, moisture, etc.
    *Note* Anyone looking to do this and follow typical organic standards will need to get High Density Polyethylene materials. PVC, which is commonly used nowadays, contains particulates that over time seep off into the water and therefore are not approved in organic gardening. I believe they're called pthalates and I think they're the same thing that causes allergic reactions from latex gloves and such. Not 100% sure on that. But unless you plan to get government approval I say use what you are comfortable with. Best wishes to all and I hope this info was helpful to someone. Maybe somebody can put my idea to work while I wait for cheaper barrels. 🤣

      I got a dozen black 50gal barrels from a local jerkey manufacturer for free, their bulk marinades come in them and they build up quickly so they give them away. I also had some big blue ones in the past from a Chinese restaurant that the soy sauce came in. Check with places like that!

    You’re rocking the subscriptions man! Dr. Ingham taught us to actually massage the compost bag for several minutes to extract as much biology as we can. I’d love to look at your compost under my microscope. It looks good because a lot of humic acid was instantly moving into the water. She also teaches that the length of tea brewing time time usually optimizes at around 24 hours, but that is dependent on temperature and quality of the compost. I realize most folks can’t check the progress with a microscope, but that’s the only way to tell when it’s ready. If you brew for several days, most of the biology will be dead because it has multiplied so much that it uses up the oxygen faster than you can pump it in, so goes anaerobic and dies. It also needs to be made at ambient temperature where it’s to be applied, or much biology will die, or at least be ineffective.

    • @garthwunsch
      @garthwunsch Před rokem

      I will get you the exact model LW Scientific supplies for our level of need (my SoilFoodWeb discussion group meets every Friday), but the best camera is undoubtedly the BioVid 4K. This is a Matt Powers recommendation. Prior to getting that info from him, no one seemed to have knowledge of a multi platform compatible camera. Macs were extremely difficult… and I have a Mac computer. One thing to be aware of is having the camera resolution equal to the screen monitor’s resolution, otherwise you’re wasting money on one unit or the other. 4k is mandatory for good video. I purchased my scope prior to getting “educated” and wasted $$$. Using a camera to view on screen is HIGHLY recommended as staring into a microscope long term is very damaging to our vision.

    Nice and simple, and I get that's the point Nate, and it's not 'bad' per se, but there's good practice, better practice, and best practice! tbh you're not maximising the microbiology in 2 mins, you're mostly extracting fulvic & humic acids. just to use an example from Dr Ingham making a scope slide, you'd agitate a test tube for 5 mins with 5:1 water:compost, commercial compost extract (not tea) in the Regenerative Agriculture space is using air agitation for 24-36 hrs to reach maximum biology extracted, you have a bubbler as seen in the IMO videos your extract would be 1000x more powerful if you used that overnight/24hrs and as you know you'd not harm seedlings by adding 1000x more biology, I'd also recomend not using the net bag in the bubbler for max extraction, just strain it after agitation if you're using a sprayer or fine rose on a watering can. I'd show you pics from my scope to prove this if I could but I can't afford to drop 2 weeks income on a scope camera! Happy gardening my friend.

    We only have fish emulsion and fresh urine. (lol, sorry)
    How much fish emulsion would you suggest to add to the extract?
    Would urine be better than the fish emulsion in this case? Fresh urine 2 oz.

    • @gardenlikeaviking

      I'd say use the fish emulsion because its packed with more nutrients and food for the microorganisms... one ounce to the gallon... urine is second best option and you could alternate one feeding with each

    Some seeds are better off being soaked before planting. Would you suggest using your Supercharged Seedling Fertilizer to soak them? ThanQ for answering and for all you do for us!

    • @MK-ti2oo
      @MK-ti2oo Před rokem +1

      You could, but why waste it? Seeds contain all the nutrients they need to grow up to the first set of true leaves so water will be fine (I like to use a cup of water with a couple tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide for germinating seeds that need a soak, that extra oxygenated environment speeds things up greatly).

    • @momcomputer6461
      @momcomputer6461 Před rokem +1

      @@MK-ti2oo I do use hydrogen peroxide (only food grade 35% w/ added water to create 3% - never the 3% you buy @ the harmacy - it contains heavy metals!) but I'm glad you included that tip for others. I wanted to hear Nate's thought on this. No, I don't waste anything. If Nate says it would be beneficial, I would soak, then strain out and retain/reuse the goodies. ThanQ for your comment!

    • @gardenlikeaviking
      @gardenlikeaviking  Před rokem +1

      if its seeds that need soaked like beans, peas, etc... then yes they benefit from a soaking in this solution because it will signal to the plant that its in an environment very rich in nutrients and microbial life and so it will signal to the seed that it can become a very big strong healthy adult... just make sure you then plant into a rich environment

      I use some pine needles and I have one pile that is probably the size of a dump truck full of them that I used the big rake on the tractor and cleaned out the duff under the trees last year rather than burn it and that pile of nearly all pine needles (there's obviously a little other plant material in there) is broken down to the point that it's usable. I did that in April of last year and piled it up and never touched it again until I stuck my hand in it a few weeks ago when I noticed how nice it looked.

      @@MK-ti2oo Nice! Good to know. We have tons of pine trees here. I’ve been letting them dry in my garden since last fall. I think I’m going to go over them with the lawn mower tomorrow. Grind them up nice so they may break down faster. Thanks for sharing.
