100% on the fat wood for handles. When I make a mistake drilling the hole, I use those for pen holders in the garage. They smell good too.

That's great that the Redhawk Haversack is in production now, Blackie. I hope that there will be more in the future. Thanks for the tips on fatwood. I'll have to look for a big great piece like you have. 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks for the good tips Blackie. My cousin lives in the sticks in north Florida. He has a bunch of hurricane downed pine trees and sent me a box up here in western WA. Great stuff for up here in the wet, cold, drenched, humid NW.

That’s a great idea, using fatwood for a handle on a tool! And, wow, that was a fantastic piece of fatwood!

I have cut lighter pine stumps from the ccc ( civilian conservation corps) in the 1930's that are still full of sap ... I have some in my fire kit right now.
    Good ideas TNX.

  • @denofearthundertheeverlast5138

I process my fatwood on a bandsaw , cut it into rectangle strips about 1/2" x 5 " or there about. I cut off the stuff that doesn't have much in it and cut it to length and now I have about 30 pieces of high quality fatwwod strips that should last a long time.

  • @randygalichia

You ought to sell some of those long pieces of fatlighter, I would buy one, in kansas that's hard to find, we have 1000 oak trees, but not a pine to be found in the wild, only thing I can get are the tiny kindling and that don't work for handles very well, I'm sure I'm not alone wanting a good 2 ft piece or larger.

Blackie!.. I just want to report, today I was in Allegan, Mi at their end of the month antique show at the fairgrounds. Its the last Sunday of each month, from May to September. Rated top 10 in the U.S. from what I hear. We go a few times every year, today the first for '24.. there were wide brim hats and haversacks of all sorts everywhere! There was not an inexpensive old knife of any make or model to be found. Old hand tools are through the roof as well. However, for $25, I found another '49 down bag and cover, in almost perfect condition !! Keep em coming. I think you reach more people than you know!

      $25 for a 49 is a great score

fatwood=lighter wood= heartwood of some species of pine trees. pine resin impregnated wood from stumps and roots. Anytime I see an old stump hole from a pine tree I take a stout stick and probe around trying to find a chunk of the heart wood(resin impregnated remains that did not rot away). I'll take that "knot of lighter wood"" and leave it by my trail for me to pickup on my way back out. Sometimes the hunks of lighter knot can be three feet long and weight a few pounds. Long leaf pine and loblolly pine produce heartwood here in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Old pine lumber harvested in the south 100 plus years ago and shipped north to New England as a building material may be resin impregnated "heartwood". We used to see pine paneling made from heart pine. Fire Departments had a hard time extinguishing fires when heart pine lumber was used as structural, siding or paneling if old warehouses (Tobacco warehouses in my area) or old homes ever caught fire.

Perhaps when it gets cooler in the fall. When I think of field shirts items like a denim shirt, BDU top, or jungle jacket come to mind.

Funny we are tickled to have a day of no rain except I have to mow the lawn. Pine knots were every here in the old days after the logging clear cutting of the late 19th century. People collected them to get their wood stove or furnace fire going in the mornings. After 100 plus years you have to make new ones.

Blackie, how can I get a hunk of fatwood like that? I live in Minnesota. We have lots of birch but it's obviously not nearly as versatile as fatwood. I've purchased boxes of fatwood slices, but it's been processed beyond what a "raw" hunk can do. Is there a company that actually sells pieces similar to the one that you've shown? I'm keenly interested.

If you'll go buy a roll of tape at lowes or home depot it comes in a plastic round container. Just in case someone wants to know.

This does look really cool. But looking at the pictures, I'm afraid this haversack is a bit too large for someone of my size. I didn't have good luck with shoulder bags that were too large overall.
