- Today's video, we demonstrate how to safely remove tree sap from your paint. Tree sap ruins car paint! Have you ever parked under the shade of a beautiful tree only to find sticky tree sap all over the place? The sticky syrupy mess oozes out from trees and falls all over your car's roof, windshield, hood, and any other paintwork and glass.
Removing tree sap can be very tricky. Some people resort to rubbing and scrubbing with hard brushes or towels, but they end up scratching and swirling the paintwork as they go.
Others use caustic chemicals like hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, water displacement sprays, or lacquer thinner to melt the sap away. Those caustic chemicals can be bad for your health, and definitely remove any wax coatings from your paintwork, leaving it exposed to the elements and more sap contamination.
Using Butter Wet Wax to remove tree sap is easy, fast, cheap, and safe. If you love your car, chances are you already have a bottle on your shelf. You don't need a lot of product, just squeeze a couple dots of Butter Wet Wax on your microfiber towel, then rub it gently over the affected area. Give it a few treatments until all the tree sap is completely gone.
This Butter Wet Wax tree sap removal trick works on any shiny or clear surface on your car. Remove tree sap from paintwork, glass, clear optical plastics, and polished metals like chrome and stainless steel.

Tree sap is the devil lol
Amen bro 😭😭😭
Tried this out today and it worked great. The sap spots were over 2 weeks old (work and a lot of rain prevented me from doing it sooner). I took a few applications on some of the spots, but they came right out with no swirl marks and minimal effort. Thank you guys for this tip, it saved me a lot of work and potentially a lot of damage to my new car!
Gotta love Butter Wet Wax!!
@@ChemicalGuysI love all your products.. However if the sap has been baked on for over a week, What would you recommend to remove it?
I tried it and it didn’t do anything thing on the tree sap on my car.
Bought your butter wet wax and the towels to remove sap that had been on the hood of my vehicle for well over a year. It worked. It worked like magic. You gained a new customer for your product line. Beyond impressed with the results.
Gotta love Butter Wet Wax!!
I have to get that for mines and my wife’s car. Unfortunately sometimes we get stuck parking under trees at work that have sap 😑. But looks simple to fix that’s Nick 😄👍🏽👌🍺

Honeydew? Or do you mean, "honey, do you think you can wash my car today?"

Would it be ideal for a darker color paint with bird droppings that have sat for a week or so? I've found I get swirls an marring if I attempt to wipe bird shit or sap off with microfiber clothes. Any suggestions thanks, I use an arsenal of your products.

Used this process today for the first time. It DOES work but not as effortlessly as portrayed in this video. Definitely still a lot of elbow grease involved. And yes, it does work on windshields.
try some Goof off after the wax. works great.
Love me some butter wet wax. I used it to wax my RV before towing it from Virginia to California. It looked freshly washed when I arrived in California. Would love to see an RV detail start to finish.
Hey Brett! Thanks so much for the amazing feedback and for your suggestion!! Detailing an RV would be pretty cool, stay tuned!

Impressive, I just bought a used car and it was sitting under a tree and has accumulated a lot of tree sap. I am gonna have to stop by in Gardena and try that out.

I have a very important question, is there something in your arsenal for the swirls in hard black plastic (pillars)?
Hey Peter! For gloss painted plastic pillars, I recommend using an Orange Hex-Logic Pad and VSS Scratch & Swirl Remover. Check out this video!

Hey, Nick! Any advice on how to keep your car clean and protected without access to a garage during the winter time up here in Chilly PA? Salt is being laid down and again, chilly. Any advice?
Hey Matt! Thanks for your message. I recommend using a coating that can stand up to harsh elements such as using HydroSlick which protects up to 12 months while adding shine and hydrophobic properties that make it difficult for contamination to cling to the surface.

I had dried on, baked on pine sap on the hood of my truck. I had to work at it a bit but the Butter Wet did take it off.
Gotta love Butter Wet Wax!
Great video! I know this should be done as soon as possible. Is a week too long? Thanks. Great products!
Hey there! After a week you shouldn't have much trouble removing tree sap using Butter Wet Wax.
- CG Nick
How to get it off windshield,? I tried rubbing alcohol but it didn't work, even diluting it.
How long until it starts to stain? A week
Will this effect a vehicles that is ceramic coated? I was told by the dealer we bought a new truck at that we shouldn't use any type of wax over the ceramic coating, but just got back from camping and sap here and there all over the truck.
Hi there! To prevent voiding your ceramic coating warranty, consult your dealership for the best solution.
Thank God for chemical guys

Hello! Loved the video :) Just a quick question, if the tree sap has been there for longer, will the butterwax take it off? Thanks!
Hey! Yes, we recommend starting off with Butter Wet Wax because its natural oils will release the tree sap from the surface of the vehicle. Thanks for the amazing feedback!
Chemical Guys thanks so much!! You guys are awesome!
I wasn’t so successful in removing the pine sap from our car. Maybe it was there longer than I gad originally thought. Ended up using isopropyl alcohol. That took most of the sap out nicely. There were other baked on sap marks that wouldn’t come out. I’ll try acetone (gently) next. Followed up using the Butter Wet Wax.
@CG is their any of your products that would repel dust or even tree sap after washing your car for so many hours.
Hi! Apply HydroSlick to provide a durable layer of protection against the elements while making the surface super slick.
Nice video! Would these products be effective in removing a huge buildup of pine sap from a Trek Deck? (Thanks!)
Hey! Thanks so much for watching. Butter Wet Wax is best suited for removing tree sap from surfaces that are gloss painted, shiny or clear.
Rubbing alcohol takes sap off very easily. Then put some instant detail on it. Done. I do use chemical guys products btw.
Loved the vid. Question… can I use these products and method on the windows and windshield?
Yes, absolutely!
My cars just been to the body shop and I’ve just got it back and noticed there’s loads of pink/ red spot all over the paint and it feel rough I’m not sure weather it’s over spray or some type of tree sap I was just wondering what would be the best thing to get rid of it off the paint? thanks guys!
Hi Ashley! A clay bar is best suited for extracting contamination from the pores of the paint.

Will this method work on pine sap that has dried & hardened itself to vehicle? I’m talking like it’s been on paint for months kinda dry/hard.
Hey!! Using Butter Wet Wax will help to soften and loosen dried sap. Washing with Bug & Tar Wash will help to safely remove the remaining hardened residue.
Thanks chemical guys!
Amazing! Can't believe that!!
Wath products did you use I had a bad connection but the same.problem with my truck thanks for the tip

Hey chemical guys! Quick question for you guys. Can I use that product on my windshield to get off some tree sap?

I have this problem but it is on my vinyl wrapped hood. I think wax would stain it. Any solutions for that?
Hey Daniel! If your vinyl wrap is gloss finish, this same procedure will work well for you.

Chemical Guys thanks nick but it is a matte finish. Any other product?
I watched your video on tree sap what was the spray you used before you used the butter wax

I have a 2022 Toyota Tacoma and already got a sap splotch on the hood. I came onto CZcams to find the best way to remove sap and came across your video. As usual I was skeptical because you made it look TOO easy. Well I can now confirm, 100%, it IS that easy. The sap just disappeared after a light wiping. I will swear by chemical brothers products from now on. I previously purchased your leather cleaner / conditioner and not only was I amazed by the easy of use, the condition of the leather, the staying power(not fading after a day), but the amazing leather scent. Chemical brothers are gods of automotive products.
Hey Jason! Thanks so much for the amazing feedback and for being part of the Chemical Guys family!!
Thanks!

I have 2 sugary coffee rings on my car. How can I get those off?

Hi Charlie! Great input, the reason being that we wanted to demonstrate the simplest method of sap removal for detailing enthusiasts that don't have access to a hose or live in an area that doesn't allow car washes. Using a waterless wash followed by Butter Wet Wax is a very contained and easy to follow procedure.

Hi Melinda! Check out the video description for product links.
Would you recommend to clay bar the vehicle first then Butter Wax it?
Brij Delada
Remove any contaminants after the wash via Clay Bar, then polish if needed, lastly you can protect the paint with glaze, sealant, and then // or just wax as a standalone protectant.
This didn't work well for me. My niece left her car at my house and I figured I would give it a good detail. In fairness, she had sap on her car that was probably baked on for years. I ended up using acetone nail polish remover. That worked well with a little elbow grease. Later, I tackled some of the chunkier sap with a plastic razor in combination with the nail polisher remover. Worked like a champ. Butter wet wax is a great wax product, though.
