  • Sacajawea, the renowned Shoshone guide of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, is traditionally believed to be buried on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. The grave site, located near Fort Washakie, is marked by a granite tombstone and is a site of historical and cultural significance, often visited by those interested in American history.
There are competing theories about Sacajawea’s death and final resting place. The belief that she died and was buried in Wyoming stems from records of the Eastern Shoshone tribe, which claim she lived with them for many years and died in 1884. This narrative is supported by oral histories and some 19th-century documents that describe an old woman, resembling Sacajawea, who recounted stories from the expedition. This contrasts with other accounts suggesting she died much earlier in 1812 in South Dakota. The Wyoming grave site reflects the version of her life story adopted by the Shoshone community on the Wind River Reservation, emphasizing her long life and continued role in Native and American history.
