    I sit on the opposite side of that shifter, but this is exactly what I needed. Thanks.

    Update: you can't heat with a gas torch to shine it up. Once sanded it stays a sanded finish. I also can't be bothered right now buying mastic glue and affixing the cap. Maybe later so I will keep it and see..

      I have a second video (replacing gear knob) which concentrates on fitting the new knob, hopefully you find it helpful.

    Thank you. Exactly what I needed. Trying this though the Knob does not move in any direction even when using a monkey rench / pioe spanner
    Are these glued on in.any way. Are there any suggestions here without famaging the gear shaft

      I could not see any residue that suggested that adhesive was used, but it was very tight and difficult to remove and it was only when I pulled up on the knob itself that I felt it move, although it was turning in both directions. It appears that you have to tear the inner lining which grips onto the patterned metal post. I got some ideas from another video in which two young blokes removed the gear knob of a Chev Spark (from memory).

    Today 28 January 2024
    2012 Barina TM Manual Trans.
    Gear nob replace/remove
    Mine was falling apart below the gear selector indicator. I tried the vice grip but it just yielded on the already crumbling outer part of the knob. So I decided to removed the rest of it and alter my goal, as this is where I figured I don't need a gear nob, as follows..
    1. Removed the gear selector indicator (top) as it is only glued and came off easily, as the already crumbling part holding it sort of in place, gone. Keep this and separate, with force, the base from the actual gear selector indicator (in 'resin' with picture backing) destroy the backing but not the selector picture.
    2. Remove the rest of the crappy crumbling gear knob with an old demo chisel and hammer. This leaves the actual base gear knob that the outer plastic is injection moulded onto (I believe).
    3. With a grinder and simple metal cut off disc amd skilfully use the flat part of the disc to remove the harsh edge lip around the top of the knob and other hashness and to shape the knob to ur liking.
    4. Electric/hand sand the nob to finish any harsh bits the grinder can't get and finish smooth generally. Sand flat the rope of the nob..
    NOTE: this is where I figured I would use a flame of some sort to smooth out the sanded plastic. I don't have one so I'm at the hardware shop now getting one that will, hopefully, lead to a nice finish of the knob. I've seen plastic in videos treated like this to restore a shine to a dull plastic finish so let's see..
    5. (To be done) use a lighter or high pressure lighter flame to melt slightly the plastic after sanding. I think a high power cigarette lighter should do but maybee more.
    6. Glue the gear selector cap onto the nob with a mastic, I think this would be beneficial as the cap is slightly larger than nob. Remember, the outer plastic has been roved and the selector cap separated, so it's not all the same size. Or just leave the selector cap off if you know where the gears are, or make your own.
    I hope this helps.
    Cheers

    Some of the barina know 2013 have been plastic welder on to the sharf had to grinde it of in pieces it did not just pop of it did turn to the left .

    • @johnvienta7622

      Mine did not come off easily, I turned it to the left using locking pliers and that tore off the inside and then I could lift it off the metal shaft. Why they did not install a gear knob that screwed on is a mystery.

      @John Vienta same the top kept breaking in pieces so everything you put on your video was correct. Just this definitely was welded on with plastic lol lucky I have a great mechanic who didn't even charge me we were more interested it what was going on he used the same tool you used.he couldn't believe it it

    hi thanks for the video.
    I bought a new shift knob and tried to install it.
    when I install the new knob, I can't get it tight enough into it's place and the knob is wiggling. I got the same knob as you show here.
    I tried to tap with a hammer to set it but still doesn't good enough.
    what am I do wrong?

    • @johnvienta7622
      @johnvienta7622 Před 11 měsíci +1

      I pushed down hard as I turned the knob and it tightened quite easily. I am not sure but I would assume that the little raised bumps on the metal gear stick are in a spiral pattern that pull the knob downwards as you turn it. All I can suggest is that you try turning it further to see if it gets tight, but of course you run the risk of not being able to move it and the gear directions will be facing in the wrong direction. The other option is to try and unscrew it and try again although I would expect that to damage the internal part of the gear knob.

      @sipoVvids Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi, thanks for answering! I eventually managed to push it down strong enough and it seems it's holding pretty good. However, I did it before reading your comment above and didn't pushed it with turning and just pushed straight down so I hope it'll stay still. @@johnvienta7622

      @johnvienta7622 Před 11 měsíci +1

      That is a good result but depending on which way the gear diagram was facing your options about turning the knob may have been limited anyway... At least if it comes loose you have the option to get another cheap one and try again. @@sipoVvids

    Sorry how do you undo the leather part at the bottom?

    • @johnvienta7622
      @johnvienta7622 Před rokem

      On this car it just pulls out. Get a slim flat screwdriver and apply gentle upwards pressure and it should lift up. Then turn it inside out and you should see a nylon strap or band, and you snip that off and the shaft will separate from the knob.

    • @johnvienta7622
      @johnvienta7622 Před rokem +1

      Assuming that the top of the shaft has the same grip pattern, have a look at my second video about replacing the gear knob as it can get tricky if you turn it past the required position.
