  • Inside The $700,000 Tecnam P2010 Plane
    0:00 - Intro
This is the Tecnam P2010, one of those airplanes that you can’t help but stop to look at when you see it on the ramp. Today we’re going inside the Tecnam P2010 to talk about everything you need to know about this sexy aircraft.
    1:02 - Cabin
Inside, the P2010 is a larger cousin of Tecnam’s two-seat P2008 light sport model, which also features a composite fuselage with a strutted metal wing and tailplane. But there’s no doubt the P2010 is a more solid airplane with a suitably more substantial look and feel. The seats are comfortable and the controls fall easily to hand.
The windows don’t open, but the tinting and smart use of vented airflow keep the cabin reasonably comfortable during taxi on hot days. The P2010 has three doors instead of the usual two found in most airplanes in this class, there are two upfront ahead of the wing struts, and a full-size door in the back on the right side that makes entry and exit for rear-seat passengers a carlike experience.
The seats themselves are carlike as well, with multiple adjustments for seat height and fore and aft position, reclining seat backs and seatbelts with familiar tongue buckles. Oddly, the rear seats are placarded to prohibit all those nifty adjustments, one of the maddening side effects of the Part 23 certification process. The forward seats slide on tracks and can be elevated with a small lever on the right side of the seat bottom. They also recline. The doors have jamb latches and a safety latch on the top, similar to Piper’s products. The baggage compartment, with a capacity of 88 lbs or 40 kg, is accessed through a hatch on the right side or from inside the airplane by removing a fabric cover that doubles as a hatrack.
    3:16 - Cockpit
In the cockpit, the G1000 is standard, with the backup display being a bright and sharp LCD unit from Mid-Continent Instruments mounted vertically between the PFD and the MFD. With a 45-minute emergency battery, it will get you back on the ground in case of electrical power loss. It contains twin screens and is designed to relieve the pilot of mission strain, which is a current trend for premium single aircraft. The GFC700 autopilot from Garmin is a $30,000 option, and is a great example of how Garmin and Tecnam’s notion of meeting in one place helps the pilot.
The GFC-700 autopilot is accurate and easy to use, and the Garmin ESP package offers force feedback when exceeding aircraft limitations. Along with the Garmin TAS 800, safety is improved even more.
    5:30 - Engine and Performance
Three distinct engine options are the P2010’s most unique feature when it comes to performance. One of these choices, the 170-horsepower Continental Aero CD-170 turbodiesel engine, makes the Tecnam P2010 considerably more appealing. Other choices are the P2010 with a 180-horsepower Lycoming IO-360, and the P2010 with a 215-horsepower Lycoming IO390-C3B6. Both engines use Avgas.
    The Continental CD-170, a liquid-cooled four-cylinder in-line four-stroke diesel engine with DOHC, powers the P2010 TDI.
According to Continental, the CD-170 decreases fuel usage by up to 50%, in fact, while the average fuel consumption of the other 2 planes is 10 and 11 gallons or 38 and 41 liters, the CD-170 burns about 5 gallons or 19 liters per hour.
Engine monitoring is incorporated into the Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit, and the 170-horsepower CD-170 engine operates on Jet A-1, Jet A, and diesel. Because of its engine, the P2010 TDI variant has a considerably greater range than the other two versions: 960 nautical miles or 1,780 kilometers compared to the 530 nautical miles or 980 kilometers of the other two variants. The TDI also has a maximum operating altitude of 18,000 feet or 5,490 meters, compared to 12,000 and 14,000 feet or 3,660 and 4,270 meters for the other 2 planes.
Meanwhile, maximum cruise speed is always the same: 140 knots at 75% power. With a full fuel of 65 gallons or 240 liters, the P2010 has roughly 510 lbs or 226 kg left. Down-fuel it by 25 gallons or 95 liters and you can just carry the imaginary four people and have two hours of endurance to near-dry tanks at a mid-power setting.
8:55 - Purchase Price and Operating Cost
The base purchase price for a new Tecnam P2010 is $345,000 before options, and the TDI version costs $412,000. While the total yearly fixed cost is roughly $30,000 to $50,000, the average hourly operating cost is estimated at $100 to $200 for the TDI version, and $200 to $300 for the other two variants.
