I accidentally went to watch NBK in the movie theater on LSD. It turned out to be the right choice 🤣. However, when the credits started rolling after the Rodney Dangerfield scene we were pissed because we thought the movie was only 15 minutes long!

That movie came out in the mid 90s. You don't look a day over 30. Did you see it when you were 6? Do you live in Austin or LA where they screen the movie still?

@@acetate909 nope I saw it back around 1996 when I was 18. We tried to go to Pulp Fiction but it was sold out. We had no idea what NBK was. Just picked it randomly.

Right on. I was 15 when they both came out and was just a little young to get in. I saw it on DVD a few years later though I have seen Pulp Fiction in theaters since. You look great for 40 btw, though you probably get that all the time.

True Romance and Natural Born Killers are essentially the same script. They're both modern day Bonnie and Clyde stories written by Tarantino, but the final films play very differently.
Tony Scott turned the script for True Romance into a straight forward crime movie with cute music and a happy ending. I've always felt that it's too shiny and sanitized to be a truly effecting film. Scott wasn't able to capture the stylized grittiness of Tarantino's imagery on screen. I liked the movie, but it's less than the sum of it's parts. I would argue that it would have been much better had it been directed by Tarantino.
Stone took the script for Natural Born Killers to a surreally dark place that worked well with the material. I feel like he elevate the words to something more. Tarantino would have made a different movie with the script, but I'm not confident that he would have made a better movie.

Tarantino is a polarizing artist. I understand why people connect with his work at different levels. I think he's a genius and believe that his filmography belongs in the same category as the greatest directors to ever do it. I also appreciate the argument that he's a derivative stylist who collages better artists work onto the screen, but that doesn't mean he's not an genius. If I were ranking Natural Born Killers against Tarantino's films it would probably be near the bottom although it's my favorite Tarantino script not directed by Tarantino.
