I think it just might be his best book. To me it just holds up so well, the characters are unforgettable, the warm and loving nurse Peggoty, the odious Mr Murdstone and Steerforth who has everyone around him so dazzled they can't see his flaws.

I know I’m late to the party but I’m hoping to join the Dickens readathon now, with David Copperfield. I’ve seen many adaptations but never actually read it. Thank you for such an enthusiastic recommendation. I’m so grateful there are Dickens lovers like you on booktube 😊

I’ll join in! I have been meaning to read David Copperfield since I read Demon Copperhead earlier this year. Shortly after that, I watched the 1999 adaptation with Maggie Smith. Enjoyed both very much. Happy to have two months in which to pace myself in reading David Copperfield.

It’s delightful to see you three times in one week, and glean from your storehouse of knowledge. The passion you have for Dickens is infectious and persuasive; I enjoy it so much. One thing I discovered about David Copperfield is the tension and sad episodes in his early life, come off the page so real, it’s emotional and moving to read them. The masterful way Dickens weaves his cast of character throughout the novel keeps the reader engaged and entertained! I can’t wait until the end of November to hear you wrap-up your thoughts about this terrific book. As always, thanks Katie.

Uriah is my favorite bad guy. It is so funny with his always "humble" talk. For some people he is truly unoyig, but I have almost die of laughing

    Hello Katie,
Amazing reasons to read "David Copperfield" ;)
I started and I am really enjoying it.
In my edition, there is also the mention of this book being Dickens' favorite child (3:21).
For a writer, it must be hard to choose a favorite child/book.
The 4th reason is my favorite - love of writing and books.
In the movie "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Martin Scorsese, the character Isabelle says that she is falling in love for David Copperfield. So relatable! :)

I think I'll try and join in for this one! I read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver last week, and luckily I knew enough about the Copperfield plot to get all the retelling hints, but it made me more curious to actually read the Dickens novel all the way through!

Looking forward to reading this. I had a late start to the Dickens readalong and missed Pickwick Papers but have read everything since. I would have never had the discipline to do this on my own and thanks to you I will have read all of Dickens’ novels by next year. Thanks Katie!

I have the 1999 film adaptation of David Copperfield, which I think I remember liking... It's been awhile. I've never actually read the book though so I'm really looking forward to this

Dickens implies that there are many heroic individuals throughout the course of the tale.Traddles is just one,as is David himself.Mrs Micawber exemplifies heroic devotion to her husband and children.Agnes is steadfast in her devotion to her father.Betsey sees in David the continuity of his father's line and in her loyalty to his parents' memory engages Dick in the restitution of David's rights .Even Uriah is devoted to his mother, for"'umble we shall ever be"😇

Very true indeed - but Tommy Traddles stands out as the most heroic for me :)

Another great introductory video! I was having some troubles to get on track with the Dickensalong (nothing to do with Dickens, it was mostly a reading mood issue), that's why I'm so excited for this one and for Victober in general. Last Sunday I've read the first two chapters of David Copperfield and fell in love with it! I can't wait to resume after a short pause 😊

I’ve started to listen to the audiobook and am enjoying it a lot. Dickens really had a gift for writing unlikable characters that get under my skin. I’m looking forward to meeting the more likable characters in David Copperfield.

Dickie and the donkey lady were very colorful characters but the very serious presentation of the boy with whom he went to school only to learn too late that the qualities evincing hero-worship in boys are less valuable in civil intercourse between friends. Much of the novel seems awfully contrived but I, for one, was happy to suspend my disbelief because the narrative was so compelling. After each hour of reading I wondered: What happens now, what happens next? And only very rarely could I anticipate the twist the joined the resolution of the preceding conflict with the arguments of the succeeding one.
