  • Canadian Submarines to Bolster Arctic Security, Govt Steps Up Defence | Firstpost America
    The Arctic is currently a major point of contention as Russia, China, and the West vouch for control over the tundra. Canada is taking assertive measures to protect its territory in this battle for supremacy. The Canadian government has announced that it is initiating the procurement process for 12 conventionally-powered, under-ice capable submarines. However, it also underscores the growing concern regarding potential threats in the future. Despite currently spending 1.37% of its GDP on defence, Canada's new defence policy anticipates that this expenditure will increase to 1.76% by the end of the decade.

      Why ..I mean Canada has the Arctic patrol ships coming in,4 now in service ,has bought the F 35s ,also P 8 Poseidons, &MQ 9 Reapers ,those specifically to monitor /defend across the Arctic ,and a billion dollar OTH radar network as part of upgrades to Norad.

  • @malcolmwatt7386
    @malcolmwatt7386 Před měsícem +4

    Well, anyways, for those who know, submarines in the Arctic are an expensive waste of money. The way to patrol and defend the Canadian Arctic has always been with a powerful air component. That includes drones, fighters, and air transport. Naval vessels in the Canadian Arctic are almost useless. However, decisions made by the Canadian Government have ceased to be rational.

      Yup. Those sonobuoys just cut through that thick arctic ice like a hot knife through butter. That's why arctic nations have fleets of airplanes to scour the ice pack instead of undersea nuclear subs.

  • @scouterstu5856
    @scouterstu5856 Před měsícem +1

    Canada bought two junk subs from UK, one caught fire and killed crew crossing the Atlantic and it had to be towed the rest of the way.
    The otber is docked in Victotia BC and has been to sea and back twice in twelfe years for local sea trials.
    The second trial tbey had a encounter with the sea floor and had to be towed back to port.
    As there is no all weather arctic submarine base (maintainance, repair, etc.,) in the Canadian Arctic and a massive task to build one their nearest ports/dock yards are a thousand some miles south on either coast.
    What's with this old time technology thinking?
    Put the dollars into submersible "drone" vessels that can do the job the subs are being purchased for.
    Tbe Canadian Defense Department from procurement to pensions is legendary for having spent billions buying nothing.
