I think what makes this is the sheer sincerity. Most bands, if put on a camp and melodramatic pulp-SF film like this, would be winking at the audience, but Queen legitimately make you believe the fate of the universe is at stake.
This right here. One of the reasons why this film is so much fun to watch is because Freddie and friends put so much passion and had so much fun making the soundtrack for this film.

I watched the movie with my father and brother when I was just 12 and loved every second of it. I played the song from Queen after the movie over and over and all the quotes from the movie are still stuck in my memory even today when I am 55.. I especially remember the quotes around: General Kala Flash Gordon approaching. What do you mean Flash Gordon approaching!?. Open fire, all weapons send out the star ship Ajax to bring back his body. Me and my friend Peter from school would constantly say those lines over and over during class and laugh. We both loved the movie.

Brian wrote way more Queen songs than people realize. Freddie even once said that all their harmonies were mostly Brian, which surprises me since Freddie is such an outstanding musician himself.
It occurs to me, though, that with Brian being a physicist (he even taught high school physics briefly before Queen!) that he probably had a mathematician’s approach to harmonies and could ferret out the most dynamic ones.
This movie was fucking ridiculous and it was great. The Queen soundtrack made it 10 times better though.

This Flash Gordon movie, was actually quite good. I know it had a cheesiness to it, but that gave the movie a kind of charm. I also like how it was done in a psychedelic 70s kind of way.

Yeah, this movie was one of those ones from my childhood that got me questioning life and its existentialism without really understanding the emotions I was feeling. All I knew is that it confused, and excited me both at the same time, while also making me a little sad. Mindfuck of a movie for a 5 year old in the 80's.
It's a great movie, the weakest point is Sam Jones, the guy playing Flash
Nah it wasn't good, that's just nostalgia talking. The acting was bad, the sets were bad. The music was awesome.
