"this is what it was like in the 80's" "but we didn't have cell phones, so life was much better" truer words have never been spoken.

It's great seeing the Young Man driving, I remember when he was almost as little as my grandson is. And Little Miss is the rescue driver. The family that frolics together stays together. Happy times, and we hope 2023 is a better year. All the best to you and your family.

One of the reasons I LOVE modern cars. Jump in when its 10F, starts immediately, throw it in reverse in 0.25 seconds and go. Get 1 mile down the road and the heat is blowing warm air.

Always good to spend quality time with the young'uns and the dog. Going out backroad driving is even better. Maybe it's time for new(er) tires on the old Suburban. Thanks for sharing. Be safe and stay well.

Impressive cold start, my 6.2 doesn’t start below 50° unless it’s plugged in, even with the new glow plugs. But it has an sm465 and I didn’t pay too much for it so I can’t be upset. Roadside service that brings coffee is the best

Fitting a Thermostart to those 6.2's helps them out no end starting wise.
Had them fire up without glowplugs when dead cold.
Relatively easy fitment, and if it does ever fail to work waaaaaay easier to get out than a seized in glowplug.

I had a couple of new GM trucks ('09 and '13) and they both used to give me that "ice is possible" message near 0 (Celcius).
Since I have been driving in CANADA in SNOW for FORTY YEARS it made me scoff at the "designed in California" trucks!

Beats the minus 32 we had. Had a 6.2 shop truck for hot shots usually had to put the space heater to warm up the oil pan and jumper cables for an hour or so!! Fun times 🤣🤣

    Dear Mr. Hevyshevy.
??? Bad starting Diesel cars in the 1980s winter times? What are you talking about? All my Diesels (Mercedes) always started well in winter times in Germany. Of course we had to use thinner oil than in the summer (15W40 instead 20W50) and put something in the Diesel tank so that the fuel did not flocculate (a special kind of fluid or simply 10 percent gasoline). A good and well maintained, strong/big enough battery was helpful too of course. I swear that I never ever used starting fluid (or brake cleaner) on a Diesel engine and that I never had a block heater.
    2) Around 1982 I drove over 1 year long and a lot of kilometres with my 1971 200 D W114/115 not knowing that I had a totally wrong spare tire on board. It was from an Opel or Ford and had a rim with only 4 holes in it. 🙈 Of course the size of the rim and the rubber was wrong too. It was my very first Daimler Benz. Maaaan, I would love to have a car looking like this again. It was pearl grey (I guess) with a creme interior and a white steering wheel. I still own the rare wheel (daily appreciated as a wall hanger). Meanwhile original steering wheels, at least the white ones, are pretty expensive.
    3) Today is the first of January 2023 and in Germany we just had the warmest Winter day since weather is registered. +20 degrees Celsius = 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Can you believe that?! Definitely no cold start possible (and not only because my car battery died two weeks ago because of age and -15⁰ Celsius = 5⁰ Fahrenheit). This kind of "wrong" weather makes us all pretty tired.
Best regards, luck and health to all of you.

A bag phone I've never heard that one , in the mid 80ies my father was trucking for a company, when he drove onto the property, he should go into a building and get a suitcase phone , and get back in his truck , then they would phone him and tell him what to do next, to hang up there was a compartment at the side of the case , and he threw it in there and said that can't be healthy .
The battery time was horrible, he was talking for a few minutes and the phone would run out of juice, I wonder how many watts that beast had .
We might only have Milliwatts but we have the phone closer to the brain .
