Looks like it was a great match to watch. Hard to tell from highlights but Thompson played really well. Nadal may have lost but I'd say the start of his comeback has been quite successful. And what a match point! One of the best I've ever seen.

  •  Před 4 měsíci +45

It's always a pleasure to watch Rafa play, and today he didn't have a bad performance, but we have been able to see what his real level is at the moment:
    - He lacks mobility.
    - It was clear today that he suffers a lot from the humidity, and sometimes he looked tired.
    - As he said yesterday in the press conference, he loses concentration and sometimes gets out of the match.
    - He has not had a clear objective to dominate and be aggressive, and Thompson has taken good advantage of the balls that he has put in the middle of the court.
In short, it is a good start to the season, taking into account he is been out of the competition for a year, but against players of higher calibre, he will suffer a lot if he is not physically perfect and playing with much more determination.

Sad to see him lose, but everyone needs to realize that Nadal was off a year and to compete again at the level that he’s at and the entire ATP for that matter. Anything can happen and he’s wise to know that, he’s been here for a long time, to take a year off and then compete again, wow…..that’s awesome! But to feel like you can compete to the fullest not like before when you compete and then there’s pain. We all know the tight schedule ATP puts of the players, tournament after tournament, it’s hard to find time for the body to recover, especially at his age. Also let’s not forget, Thompson is also a great player, those long rallys, I was hoping he’d make a mistake. Who knows, if when Rafa was younger Thompson would have his work cut out for him. I feel the momentum shifted when it was 6-6 in second set and Thompson won it in a close battle. But we as fans should just enjoy Rafa is back. Like he said, his goal wasn’t to win at ALL cost, just play. Let the body get back to the level he wants without such high expectations. He did an excellent job! ❤ Rafa!

However i hope that Rafa can find solutions for his physical problems and that his body will help him to play the AO, because what he showed today seems good to me and he made some awkward placements but all in all he played a fantastic match. Althgough he had lost the match , he played some epic rallies with his opponent and showed again his fighting spirit till the end. Thats Rafa's Traidmark and Rafa is doing Rafa things... I think mentally and playwise he is ready for the AO because his level was very good throughout the three matches that he plays. Very good match. It's a good test for Rafa. He goes improving his fitness level. Congratulations to Thompson for follow fighting specially in the tie break in the second set.

Bad luck for nadal on 2nd set. Thompson isn't actually good, but nadal just lost his actual shape cuz of his injury and advanced age. Anyway, how will djokovic do in australia open 2024? I'm so worried with him

This AO is hard to predict. People think Novak is the clear favourite, but they thought that before Wimbledon as well. We don't know how much the young guys improved. They will get better now all the time, Novak won't get better anymore. He can only get worse from now. And he might have problems with his wrist right now, playing 5 setters will be hard.

Nadal can't win a match longer than 2 hours. The young guns are coming for him in hard courts.
He hasa slim chance of winning a grand slam again.
